- Legendary filmmaker Quentin Tarantino stopped by What The Flick?! for an in-depth interview with Ben Mankiewicz, covering a wide range of topics from the battle between television and film, to police brutality in America, and of course, The Hateful Eight.
"The Hateful Eight" is out in theaters December 25th.
Tarantino seems surprisingly humble for being inarguably one of the best and most successful living movie directors of our time
+cecile. no1 I agree, he really seems down to earth.
cecile. no1 well, whatever- is it really that bad? horrific is kind of strong
plus, there's a good chance someone is just telling a story to name-drop... who knows if it's true.
people like sex, it's human
why is it bad
AWildBard sorry but the mental picture of him sucking someone's toes while jerking off is extremely disturbing
it is sensational; i don't know why you are so stuck on this image. I seriously doubt this story is true. and even if it is, why did someone go out of their way to tell the story and why are you attracted to it. anyway, the reality is we are all human beings and that includes sex. personally I like sex, I enjoy it and I'm glad other people do too. One thing all humans have in common and that is we were created by sexual reproduction.
+cecile. no1 That's the thing with truly smart people. They are open, look at you eye to eye and aren't afraid of being challenged.
Lots of praise in the comments for this video already, but I really wanted to say Quentin really opened up here & touched on a lot of fascinating topics. And kudos to Ben for leading the interview but still letting Quentin talk, giving him space to show off his passion. I've seen so many interviewers over the years only letting Quentin get in "soundbites" or cutting him off. Great stuff!
+jollyblue And he avoided being too "fan-ish" and tongue-tied :)
+jollyblue On the live show done the same day, he mentioned that he had to actively remember to do that. And that it was a little effort to avoid fanboy-ing
thetruerift Actively remember to do what? Let Quentin speak without interrupting?
+jollyblue Yeah. This was a huge step up for What the Flick to show that they can make a case for their channel as a 'sophisticated movie review' show and Tarantino really showed a lot of restraint this time around.
I think a lot of it comes from Tarantino and Mankiewicz having a respect for each other too, what with Mankiewicz's involvement with Turner Classic Movies and of course his family legacy. They are people who know about classic cinema and its history/importance, unlike a lot of other interviewers Tarantino has likely been involved with.
+jollyblue Actively remember to not fan-boy and say how great he is...
Quentin frickin Tarantino????
TYT upping their game bigtime.
So happy for them! Started watching in '08, it's been great to see them grow into what they are now
+J Winters for real. been a fan ever since they had that horrendous looking dark green set.
+name Well they have had Jimmy Carter, Al Gore, Noam Chomsky, etc. This isn't even big for Ben Mankiewicz...look into the Mankiewicz family
+William Faulkner yeah im aware. but im talking in terms of the film business. As far as im concerned QT is the biggest guy TYT ever had on set in terms of landing an interview with a director. I mean QT is a living legend in the biz for crying out loud.
+William Faulkner I'm more impressed when they book Danny Trejo than any of those media sluts.
In the first 10min i kept looking if the video was buffering, but no , it was Tarantino 2sec pauses. Amazing. Instead of the usual "huuummm"
Yeah, I noticed that, too. Refreshing.
Every interview, and I litterally mean *every* interview of this guy is great.
Um, it's 'literally'...literally
he’s his own best protagonist
The best thing about a new Tarantino movie is getting to see a new QT movie. The next best thing is the plethora of interviews we get to see with him. Love listening to him talk.
Jay Paul exactly!
Thank god this was not Cenk doing the interview.
+nikosvault Cenk rarely does interviews on _What The Flick?!_ He usually just turns up for the odd movie review and _Game of Thrones._
Ashley Small
Well he interviewed Oliver Stone.
And it was....underwhelming.
nikosvault I didn't catch that one. I'll check it out.
+nikosvault He also interviewed Jill Latiano and that got weird.
why?
Whoa u got quniten Tarantino big time interview!
+Golly McOxbig I'm glad you called him out
cause you've never made a mistake in your life.
+Armani Almonte Your so right
+patu8010 *you're
+Tommy Tone Dude Bens works at TCM, his interviewed SUPER stars before.
+Phats Mickey
I'm glad YOU called him out
cause you've never made a mistake in your life.
Ben is the new Larry King. Holy shit this interview was a very intimate and interesting HOUR!!!!!! Not every interviewer or "star" could do this.
These are the best kinds of interviews, where they feel more like a really interesting and engaging conversation.
I could spend my whole life just listening to him. Never getting tired of it! He's such a rousing soul. Living in a world where a man named Quentin Tarantino exists makes my life worth for living. Always love him and always will.
Idem, when I'm in a shitty mood I just listen to Quentin, his enthusiasm is contagious and makes my day better.
My favorite interview ever made. Whenever I lose motivation for filmmaking, I know I can watch this and realize what I need to do with my life. Also, it’s crazy how relevant this interview is.
this interviewer does a great job interviewing tarantino, not an easy task. i enjoyed this interview a lot. big fan.
I love Ben, he is TYT's best man for almost all of the things they do, be it news analysis, political discussions, interviews or movie reviews.
Him and Wes Clark are almost always on point
hear hear
+Krešimir Koržinek As much as I love Ben his What The Flick reviews are often times the best, but every once in a while he doesn't get a complex movie that is just fantastic, that is the only complaint I have about him. But to be clear he's wonderful and I enjoy him on all the TYT he takes part in.
Great interview Ben. I can't believe you got Tarantino on the show.
This was such a perfect interview. They covered so much in such a lay back fashion, and it was extremely obvious that they both enjoyed it....could have easily watch another hour.
clearly Ben has put him at ease. good to see 😊
I enjoy how Quentin takes his time and thinks before he speaks.
You know, perhaps I'm prejudiced in a weird way, but watching tarantino films back in the day, I could never have imagined him being such a humanistic, thoughtful person. What a great artist indeed!
🥱
@@r.p.mcmurphy6623 🥳
Super interview. Ben, great job just getting out of the way and letting Quentin be Quentin. He's relaxed, open and as unaffected as he's ever been in any interview I've ever seen with him.
this is a FANTASTIC interview. Please do more Ben! I can't tell you how refreshing it is to see a relevant conversation being conducted in an interview.
Holy shit! The best living director... I'm flabbergasted.
[edit] I should've said "my _favorite_ living director" as has been pointed out. I'm not that arrogant to suggest that I have that knowledge. It's just like my opinion man. =)
+Ryan Swanson Well
+Ryan Swanson Scorsese, Coen brothers, Paul Thomas Anderson > Tarantino
+Erik Bateson I wouldn't put coen brothers above tarintino, Scorsese is a different generation of director so there's not really a comparison to be make and pta makes too different movies to really compare
Well, the comment was that Tarantino is the best living director, and Scorsese's still alive. The Coen brothers are a little more reliable and less self-indulgent than Tarantino, and PTA rules.
To be clear, I do love Tarantino and can't wait for The Hateful Eight. I just don't think he's unparalleled.
Love Quentin Tarantino. I appreciate how he doesn't sugar coat this culture or historical American culture. Keep up the good work my man.
Quentin Tarantino is a straight up boss. His movies are legendary, he uses his influence in a legit way for good causes, and he seems like a straight up man. One of our best Americans.
Classy, Ben! Excellent conversation. Thanks for being so well prepared!
Thank you for this interview. I can listen to Tarantino talk all day. This interview covered so much. It was almost a film -- starts out hot with lots of laughs and humour, then somber drama towards the middle, then a wholesome resolution.
Wow, what a good interview! Could've heard another hour or two
This is hands down my favourite interview on CZcams! When I saw this flash up on my twitter feed (Cenk tweeted it out), I couldn't believe it was true, TYT are officially BIG TIMERS now! Even TV stations can't get Quentin Tarantino to sit down for 10 minutes never mind a full fucking hour! QT is one of only a handful of film directors I know the name of, and he's 100% my favourite. I've been so excited to the see the hateful eight, this has just added to it.
+Matt Roberts Big news orgs can't be _bothered_ to put Tarantino on for an hour.
+takanara7 Ok..we get it that you don't like QT.
nibsvkh I like Tarantino. My point is that hyperactive news channels wouldn't do hour-long interviews of anyone.
Sorry,I took a different inference by your comment.
+Matt Roberts dont you think it could be Tarantino dont give a shit about the mainstream?
Fantastic work Ben, really great job with this interview! So glad to this interview is an hour long as well!
Just, thank you WTF soooo much for this.
Ben, you killed it. Great chemistry with Mr. Tarantino. Amazing interview.
Never seen this Pro side of Ben before. Damn he's a good interviewer.
and he watches incest porn
@@Vleeslucht so what? I do too! 🙄
Awesome job, Ben. You really rocked this interview.
Thanks Ben and Quentin for one of the most enjoyable hours I have spent this week! Truly interesting conversation on film and society.
What an interview to snag, good work guys! And Ben definitely has a way of just instantly turning an interview into a conversation between two people, think it's his demeanor, the way he just won't be phased
I wish Quentin Tarantino would do a movie about police brutality. He is outspoken about it and it is a subject that needs to be addressed.
That would be a pretty ballsy and direct approach. And you know for sure that the police would definitely boycott and sabotage that one like North Korea for the interview. They don't want the truth to be revealed they're scared that the people will lose trust in the police. 😂
While I agree that police brutality is a horrible problem, it is talked about like it is a common occurrence, which it isn’t. There are more pressing issues, but I don’t view Tarantino as the type that should do that sort of subject matter to begin with.
Pugster it’s not common for you. Think about that before you get offended.
It’s common for other people...but not for you. You say it isn’t common, but that because YOU don’t experience it. And you know exactly why.
Some people experience it constantly. But you don’t believe it, and can’t imagine it, and so you just believe it’s not a big deal. But that’s because you’re white.
You don’t see it as much as others. Go ahead and deny it. I know how this convo goes.
But just THINK about it....if you want.
@@HelloTardis Well sure, it happens, but it's not common. And that's backed with statistics. I know that you may want to play the victim for sympathy, but you can't deny facts: it doesn't happen as often as people say it does. And besides, it happens more to white people than black people. Cry me a river.
@callmecatalyst Nope, i still stand where I stood then. Agree to disagree.
Mankiewicz is a great interviewer. I honestly did not think he was going to ask Tarantino's use of the N word in his pictures. Now Mankiewicz should get Scorsese on WTF and ask him about his characters using the N word in his films.
Really enjoyed the interview, and then 30 minutes in, It really kicked in, you shifted into overdrive.
You really did a service and talked about an important issue in a thoughtful way. Thank you.
wow that was so awesome i want to save this interview forever. The internet tries to make Tarantino out like a bad interviewee but really, when he has a competent person hosting the interview, it is amazing. Two very historically important smart and entertaining people, this was great!
Am I the only person who kept checking the video to see if I accidentally paused it in the middle of Quentin Tarrantino speaking because of how he talks?
Yes
Wow, this is great, Ben! Such an enjoyable interview, thank you Quentin and TYT :)
Great job Ben, loved this interview. One of the best Tarantino interviews I've ever watched.
This is the best Tarantino interview. I am so glad Ben let him speak because Quentin is so fascinating I could hear him talk for hours. His movie was amazing and more artistic than originally perceived. Thanks for making me excited about movies :)
It's nice to see Tarantino not be as snobby as he was about the projection. He's more understanding and respectful about digital projection and is more clear about his love of the 70 mm.
+J Wizard Phoenix it would be even better if film and digital could coexist
Excellent interview. Tarantino is a brilliant writer/director, and I can't wait to see this film.
One of the best interviews I have ever seen. Ben, good job! I could tell you had fun, and Quentin seemed to love being in conversation with you.
I love interesting conversations, the fact that this is an interview just becomes secondary after a while...enjoyed this. 👍
Great, great interview. Ben Mank, you're the best.
Awesome job Ben. Really interesting interview.
Wow, Ben! This interview was so great! I did not expect this..
seriously, Mankiewicz could not have worded or better prepared his questions more...i forget the last time I have seen such a thoughtful "gotcha"-less interview, so fantastic
I absolutely was not expecting to see this is my subscription feed. What an awesome surprise.
Great interview, Ben did a fantastic job!
Excellent interview. It's definitely going to be a Tarantino movie marathon day. Completely agree about Jackie being a hangout movie
One of the best interviews I have seen in awhile! Good work!
This is a very kind and special interview.......... I really, really like it....
Great PR move. His team knows that WTF fans are true movie lovers like him. And Ben giving us James Lipton realness with his hour long intimate interview skills. Good job everyone!
My best friend actually went to a movie with Tarantino. He described him thusly. First, he said that he was "just a regular guy," none of that "I'm a famous director" attitude whatsoever. Two, he was absolutely crazy about movies. And three, as they watched the movie together, he had a rather bizarre inclination to laugh out loud at the serious parts of the film, and be stony silent at most of the funny parts, which he found rather "odd." He said that some times his laughter would be so loud that a few theater patrons would apparently yell out their displeasure at the disruption, not realizing that they were telling Quentin Tarantino to "shut the hell up!!" I thought that was the absolutely most hilarious recollection of all.
Wow, this was a fantastic interview. Hats off to Ben and QT.
never thought I would see a Quentin Tarantino Interview on this channel tbh. kudos
It was like two mates chatting. Effortless. We need more of this from Ben. QT is awesome as always. Love his enthusiasm, as ever
Tim Roth is one of my loves. Followed him since he was Trevor. I have that film on DVD....old school
Two mates?? One's a kiss ass, the other's a non-stop talking egotist. That's not the basis for a friendship.
@@garrybaldy327 it sounds like you enjoy Netflix originals...
Great interview, the roadshow was a wonderful treat. Hollywood needs to do more of these types of special engagements.
I wasn't familiar with the channel before this. Definitely going to check out more of your stuff. Great interview and interviewer!
He such a cool guy, his words ooze of passion and love for cinema
Way to go Ben. Solid interview with an epic director.
one of the best interviews i have seen for a long time....
That was wonderful! Thanks Ben!
I remember being disappointed after watching the Kill Bills that we never got to see what happened to Vivica Fox/Copperhead's little girl. I didn't know there would be a third movie, but now it makes sense...
Tarantino, you are a total genius . Thank you for your art!!
That was a great interview, I love the long format, especially with someone as interesting and intelligent as Tarantino.
Bravo Ben and Than you Mr Tarantino. Really enjoyed this interview and thoughts on film, tv and present day issues.
And here we are with the police brutality thing. The convo at 30:00 on resonates today. I just love what QT says. Can imagine he's saying the same now. Great interview all round too.
Ben did a remarkable job of remaining at the same level as Quentin, even though he clearly is a fan. This was a very good interview :)
What an insightful interview. Thank you! Quentin's utter disgust & disdain for the seeming institutional racism within the US police force, was palpable. The fact that he chose to put his head above the parapet, when he could have stayed quiet, shows the principle of this man.
That was an interesting and informative interview. Well done, Ben Mankiewicz!
this is why what the flick is my favorite channel!!!
You opened the door Ben, now move to other directors, actors, movie people and make it an ongoing series!
Excellent interview, Ben! Quentin seems extremely down to earth in this interview, and you guys raised a ton of fantastic points and insights together. Well done!
+msacca It's because unlike most interviewers Ben actually knows what he's talking about and is a fan
Very nice interview. Couldn't resist. Watched Django Unchained immediately after the interview. Waiting for the Hateful Eight
Tarantino is such a cool and brilliant person. To me, the great film maker of our time. Also, he writes DAMN good dialogue.
I was a "kid" until I saw Reservoir Dogs at age 14. Embarrassingly terrified of even lame pg-13 horror flicks. But listening to that dialogue around tipping early on....oof. Sucked me in. Mr. Orange (Tim Roth) pleading to be taken to hospital while bleeding out in the back of that car? Something clicked- I was never scared of another film again. I started to appreciate 'film' in a whole new light. A bomb exploded and my mind just went "OH that's what a good movie is".
Paid way more attention to movies from that point on and became way harsher with my criticism, probably obnoxiously so. Quentin's work absolutely inspired a passion. He is single-handedly responsible for my inability to appreciate all those Marvel movies.
Quentin Tarantino is the quirky weird guy that we all wish we could have as our best friend, cause he's always interesting.
I can't remember who said it but it was a well known writer who said " be bad , be good , be stupid , be smart but don't ever be boring".
Ben's a great interviewer. He has his own opinions but doesn't interrupt the guests to voice them. Its a great well-paced interview.
What a great interview! Great job What The Flick?!
This channel will never be the same...
i love his über enthusiasm every time he presents a new baby... that's real passion. can't wait for TH8!
Great movie I must say. Watched it 10 times back to back! Watching it now on my laptop while using my cell phone for this interview. Great job.
Awesome! My favorite movie critic and my favorite director together. Ben is masterful as an interviewer and Tarantino is a fascinating individual.
There’s only one Quentin Tarantino like that’s it so every interview or podcast he does are going to be legendary even more than they are today
i think the reason this is so good, is because he's just letting QT talk and explain without having to push for things or be limited by time
Ben I am so glad you got this guy on the show. All is right with the world. Also you really gave us a great interview. Awesome.
Great Interview Ben, I hope you do more of them, Quentin is a hollywood legend, love his flicks.
Quentin Tarantino does a killer Robin Williams impression. Or vice versa.
+2nd3rd1st OH MY GOD, YOU'RE RIGHT!
+Marco Antônio God is still with you..regardless.
+The Artist Formerly Known As.. hah gayyy
man's a genious. and the interviewer knows how to handle it. awesome stuff, almost like art.. :)
Ironically you can't spell genius.
This is one the best interviews I've ever seen. Congratulations! And thank God (?) for Quentin Tarantino, my admiration for him just increases every time I listen to him. I'm literally counting the days to watch The Hateful Eight.
fantastic interview Ben. not much material like this coming out anymore.
love this interview. that was just good. God... that was just... really good. just really awesome, and well... God that was really good.
I have recognized this guy numerous times, but don't know the interviewer's name. he is official as shit! best since the legend Jon Stewart.
Tarantino should do a TV series. A big one. Just let him get all his brilliance out.
Not sure he’d be up for it. His process seems to be “huh, that’s cool, let’s play around with it for two years and make something great out of it”. And then he has a movie. Rinse, repeat, ever since the Reservoir Dogs day’s. With a series, he’d need to have just one core idea for which he’d need to make a 6-8 hour long movie out of it in the least.
Fantastic interview by Ben and so insightful by Quentin.Decades from now this will be viewed by real movie fans. How unfortunate we don't have something like this with Howard Hawks,John Ford or John Huston to name a few. There are clips of the great directors of the past but I feel QT real opened up here and let the conversation flow in an unguarded manner.
Great interview, it must have been hard to get it with how the media treats him. I've watched most of his stuff, not all of it, and I think I will give the rest of his stuff a shot after this. He seems like a cool dude and is deserving of his success. Keep it up Ben! Hope you get many more opportunities like this and I hope this brings in some new fans.
this is so interesting, thx wtf/tyt!
It took me a couple of sittings to watch this long ass interview, but hey it's Quentin..fuckin..Taran..fuckin..tino!
When I first heard of Tarantino joining the protests I was a bit cynical. After all it is not unusual for celebrities to join in on trending topics/issues for PR.
This interview was interesting and insightful. I learned a bit about the man and understood his point of views and the way he goes on about doing his craft.
The Hateful Eight looks like a good movie and What The flick raised their game with this interview.
I know a lot of people have commented on this already but this was a great job of interviewing by Ben. Awesome watch
Wow, impressive interview guys! You just went up a notch in my book ... that puts you at notch one
