Diving Inside the USS Saratoga to visit the Dentist Office

- In this video you'll find a lot of RAW shipwreck penetration video that I shot inside the USS Saratoga in Bikini Atoll. I decided to not edit down a lot of the footage or add any other audio to give the viewer the experience of what it feels like diving inside this historic Aircraft Carrier. You can hear how quiet it is and eerie lack of sound except for my breathing and sounds from my equipment. As we move from room to room you'll see how incredibly silty it is inside. That is why it feels like we are moving so slowly. This dive requires cave or overhead certification because you are hundreds of feet inside and down a level and when you exit it will be on the line in near zero visibility. Even moving slowly and diving a rebreather while carefully inside won't prevent silt from getting stirred up. This is an 888 foot-long Aircraft Carrier with many rooms, doors, hallways and things to see inside. The "Sick Bay" area is a great part of the shipwreck where you can see a scale, O2 bottle, operating table and the Dentist Office. I had to move my camera vertically through doorways and maintain my own buoyancy while getting into these areas.
At the end of the video you'll see the final shot I was trying to achieve. In the past I have only seen shots of one Dentist chair in the murky water. It took us 3 dives inside the wreck, each being 2 hours total because if penetration getting in and out of this location, depth and decompression obligation. We had to coordinate very clearly and perfectly on our 3rd dive to act quickly yet efficiently to "get the shot" I dreamed of getting here. To illuminate the entire room, 3 of the dentist chairs and the sink and mirror with cabinets. It really was a difficult shot to achieve and i'm grateful to my model JC Erba for his patience and to my Safety Diver Rick for keeping an eye on everything. It really is a team effort and i'm extremely proud of what we achieved.

Amazing job and brilliant footage Becky. JC sets a pretty high bar there in dive skills and I am sure you would have had to as well to keep the space clean for your shots. Congrats: )!!

Glad to hear that. It isn't completely silent. If you do listen you hear some of my equipment and gas additions. The rebreathers are quiet though.
Amazing images and great lighting and filming. That must be some serious task loading to get the shots and keep it all clean!
trimix, rebreathers, wreck penetration, lighting, shooting while keeping track of navigation, buoyancy and watching PO2 ect... for sure!

Thank you, i'm glad to hear everyone's watching until the end to see the final image. I thought it would be interesting to show what it takes vs just the final shot. SO much goes into it. Like i said i my caption, it took us 3 dives to finally nail the shot.

Glad you enjoyed it! Do you mean the gear we wear specifically? I have some other videos showing what a rebreather is and what it does. Bexky, as an avid open circuit, TEC-45 sidemount wreck penetration diver and retired U.S. Navy surface warfare officer who has served on several large ships , I truly am amazed by this dive on "SARA", for which I often served as plane guard on my ship cruiser following astern her during flight ops. Great buoyancy control! Slow and easy!! Since I assume you are filming the team's dive, which diver [ahead of you] is diving the red Dive Rite fins? I've tried and owned a pair years ago but always found them to be too stiff for me and revert to vented, channel-style ScubaPro Jet Fins [XXL with my dry suit or XL with wetsuits]. If you're the videographer, which fins are you diving? ALL THE BEST!!! Morgan
Thank you for your comment and for your service. I'm glad you got to see the Saratoga before she was sunk. That must be kind of surreal for you. Its good to hear you now enjoy diving ships too. there is so much incredible history. The diver in red fins is JC, he probably uses them because they are lighter weight than some jet fins even though he's in a drysuit. I personally was in a backmount rebreather ...a megalodon and i use the OMS slipstreams because they are similar to my beloved Jet Fins but lighter for travel and a little lighter in the water so my feet don't drop (I was diving wet). They are my goto fins for most of my diving though. I have 4-5 sets of fins for different things. I have a pair of Fourth Element tech fins which are nuetral in the water and also really nice. Plus my recreational Mares Quatros.I love those for wetsuit diving but i find they are too long for wreck penetrations. I prefer my stiffer OMS Slipstreams or Jet fins personally.
Becky, OMS Slipstream fins are my dive travel fins when diving warm water in thin wetsuits or rashguard. Very same mold as the Jet fins but, as you know, lighter in monoprene (rather than heavier natural rubber).

@@wirelessone2986 Thank you, it seems a lot of people like that. I was so scared to post with just the original audio which isn't much on a rebreather. I found it kind of relaxing and obviously realistic. Anyway, i don't think the location of the U-97 is known. I'd love to document it.
@BeckyKaganSchott Becky its very relaxing...I dove for years in the Great lakes and ambient noise is so immersive into YOUR dive for me.Also get a go fund me to dive UC-97...I would donate!!
@BeckyKaganSchott OH UC-97 is known but may not be released to the public Im not shure...but A and T Recovery discovered it in 1992 and is on their WIKI page under lake Michigan projects at the bottom of that drop down. I bet Cris Kohl might know what's up with UC-97.
@@wirelessone2986 I figured AandT has it but won't release it. Even for me to document it. I know others are out looking to "relocate" it so we can dive it =) It can't be too deep.
no sound?
I mention in my description that I didn't add any sound to keep the natural sounds of what its like to be on the dive. It's eerie and quiet except for the sounds of my gear and addition of gas into my rebreather occasionally. I think it's best to watch it full screen. Audio up and just immerse yourself like you're in the dive.
