I had a zoom call with some students recently, and I was struck by how many were turning their horses like cars! This is a mistake we all make in the beginning but it is important not to turn your horse like a car because it throws them off balance!
One of the most common mistakes I see is riders trying to turn when their reins are too long. This is problematic because rather than making subtle rein aids to turn your horse, you have to do big exaggerated movement with your arms to communicate with your horse!
The second mistake is the aforementioned “car turn” where your outside hand comes up and over the horses’ neck as if you were turning the steering wheel.
The correct way to turn is as follows. If we’re coming down the rail and want to turn right.
Close outside rein for a half-halt
Use your outside leg and rein to push the horse away from the rail
Open the inside rein away from the neck to get the horse flexing in the direction of travel
Execute a perfect turn!
The aid is much more subtle when done correctly and it it important to remember that ideally your horse is turning more from your leg and seat and less from the rein aids.
Another mistake I encounter a lot is riders leaning in the turns like they are riding a bicycle! Learning into your turns will cause the horse to fall to the inside and go on the forehand.
If you're having trouble with getting your horse to turn, here is another video that might help you:

Thank you Amelia, I have been having trouble turning to the left and having played with my aids over the last week. I said to my instructor today that using the outside leg and rein and half halt to balance made all the difference for an effective turn. Sounds like I'm on the right track!
I've never seen anyone do the "steering wheel" turn, but you had me laughing.
I tend to lean in a bit, working on it with my instructor.
Thanks for another great video.
Thanks Amelia. The rein aids are also problematic in a turn if you don't have an understanding of how the type of bit effects the contact if you are primarily attempting to turn with your reins. Causes unneeded pressure and pinching on the mouth which will cause the horse to evade contact. As always appreciate your videos.

I really need to thank you so very much you are the best coach ever and right I know how to draw Kano without bumping on top of my horse and my coach is telling me that you’re really improving so that’s why I really need to say thank you so very much you are amazing
That makes me so happy to hear! Thank you for sharing
Good boy, Mercurio 😍😍 I definitely need to break the habit of letting my outside hand get too high.
Perfect teacher 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you! 😃
Thank you, Amelia, for again demonstrating how the OUTSIDE leg helps the turn. I have a horse that is very stiff and has difficulty bending to the left, so when we are turning left, I often am using my inside leg a lot too. How can I get the bend and also get a correct left turn?
Go back to basics and make sure he is moving away from your left leg (ground work, leg yields etc)
Mercurio is so cute! 😍🐴
I think so too!
When outside aid is applying pressure when circling a ring what are the inside and outside reigns doing? Thank you SO much for great videos!
Good question! The outside rein is steady. Supple and give on the inside rein.
@@AmeliaNewcombDressage You’re an amazing instructor. I wish I was in CA to lesson with you. I’m on NY relocating to NC around August. I would love to have 5 days in FL with one lesson per day with you. A great learning experience.
@@AmeliaNewcombDressage Thank you!!!!!
So, signal and “give” with the inside rein, and “execute” the turn with the outside aid (leg) Is this correct?
I am definitely guilty of the motorbike lean into the corner…
I'm confused about half halting the outside rein. Is that to keep the horse straight through the turn?
it's to keep the shoulder from popping out!
I have horse called he crabs one of the rides and starts getting heavy when I ride him How can I get him to be goes steady Amelia?
Great question! Here is a video that will help you: czcams.com/video/VD6cU_AOywE/video.html
First!
I would like to ask for a video of how to lunge a horse with aids, Best regards
Hey Florka! I have a lunging section in my groundwork masterclass, and it is on the list to do for youtube! :)
