@chrisryangolf- you got me from 90's to 80's; now these putting tips you gave me- I'm on my way to 70's :)-- thank you so much!! if you ever come to San Diegol I would love to go to your golf camp/whatever
Wow really glad I could help, hoping to be over that way in the not too distant future
Your videos have made a huge difference in my game. Thanks so much! My handicap has gone from 27 to 21 this year. If I could get my putts what a miracle that would be. Thanks again, you are an excellent instructor.
The bloopers at the beginning never get old, haha! I love changing it up with some putting tip videos. Ball marking with a line is something I haven't done yet but really should! The best advice I was given was to imagine a hole the size of a trash can opening as your hole to sink in for your first putt- Just try and get it close don't go for it all. Set yourself up nice for your second putt. Thanks for the videos as always Chris! Cheers!~
Definitely try the line on the ball, it may not be for you but I’d be surprised if you didn’t find it helped
I'm a high handicapper (24) and consistently averaging over 40 putts per round. Looking forward to implementing some of your tips. Thanks!
Great video, Chris! Very good job at condensing material that could have easily stretched into hours of lessons. Well done.
Great Tips! I thought I've always been a decent to okay putter but recently I have developed a case of the "Yipps" and have constantly been missing 2-3 foot putts. My lag putts have been good but I continue to 3 put when I shouldn't be. I am going to diligently practice everything you just taught me.
Your videos are fantastic. There is a lot of bad information out there. Because of that, i've been watching your golf videos exclusively for about a month now. I've been doing your drills with the alignment sticks. I have managed to drop from 110-120 to 90-100. Thanks, Chris! Your channel is one of the three youtube channels I'm subscribed to.
Thanks for the video.. 39, 35, 37, 36, 34 putts on my last 5 rounds.. Have no clue on distance control on longer putts... I feel confident on most putts out to 5-6ft if I can avoid pushing the putt.. I try to practice 2, 5, 7, 10 yard stock flat distances for feel then try to work to nearest.. focusing on a stable base and ensuring a positive accelerating stroke has given me some improvement.. A lot of work still needed to eliminate the 3 putts..
I like the mindset of focusing on process for the short putts - will greatly reduce my self imposed tension over the putt!
Chris , I'm a +1 handicap .... Not a pro , but pretty good amateur..... This video is THE BEST putting instruction video on youtube . Fundamentally really solid . Well done mate
So awesome! I love this. I started golf in September and I really like this approach to putting
Great video, simple stuff but often forgotten or underestimated so it's great to come back to this video for a refresher.
Do you have any recommendations in terms of strike, how high up on the ball should be hit?
Playing off 8 and putting has been drastically improved by following your last vid on putting, when you said about looking at the line, decide on, get into the zone, walk up to the ball and hitting it without any practice swings. Amazing but works for me. Not as good as the remarkable masterclass by Cantlay but I’m happy with it.
Great lesson though and thank you again.
He was super impressive!! Everything he hit just went it, crazy good performance!
4 very clear points to work on . Thanks .Q: how do you select a putter ?
Thanks for the tips for i really need help putting after 40 yrs on some slopey fast greens here. I will focus on the process and keeping lower body quiet.👍⛳
watched this video last night after putting 22 times on 9 holes for a 44... today I went out and hit a personal best 40! The eyes on the hole trick really helped me today!!! Thank you
Great video…each tip really makes sense and is very easily applicable
Brilliant. No nonsense approach with intelligent tips. Thank you...
I'll be trying these tips tomorrow! Thank you.
Hi Chris,
Thank you for this simple but informative video. I have been really struggling with my putting of late but this video has really helped. I can't quite seem to get to grips with using the line on the ball, it kind of puts me off? However, the stability drill and the tip about using my eyes on the practice stroke have worked a treat. I am still going to try the line on the ball tip, maybe I'll get used to it?
Once again many thanks.👍
Great videos! I find many of the golf instructors online to be kind of annoying or worse; so much so that I can’t watch them fully or certainly not twice. Your videos can be watched multiple times (for slow learners like me) and they always help. Keep doing what you’re doing!
Great putting tips , going to think differently about putting in future . Thanks
Great tips. Look forward to practicing.
This was awesome. Chris is the best on the internet
Thanks Chris really useful. My handicap index is 6.0 but I average 31.3 putts which is really holding me back. The long ones are fine but I really struggle with 5 to 6 footer. I shall start marking my ball.....
Gez one thing that improved my putting was something I heard one of the pros talking about 10 years ago and I've been doing ever since. Once I've done all the reading the green I address the ball. Then I look at the hole and follow the line from the hole back to the ball. I do this twice then putt. When doing this the last thing your doing is seeing the line at your putter aiming position. It improved my putting greatly.
Great tips! I use that exact practice swing technique and it helped me tremendously with distance control. The point of entry tip is awesome too, even on long putts I visualize the ball rolling in the cup the last 6 inches, i can usually see how it needs to enter the hole, then I just follow that line back to my ball with my eyes to see where I need to start my roll to achieve that exact last 6 inches. Now if anything I tend to leave putts a tad short, which sucks but better than rolling 5-6’ past i reckon.
At least you’ve done the pre-work for that second 6 inch putt 👌🏻😉
Not as good as 3-4 past tho...Never gonna sink putts if they donr get there
I’m looking forward to trying these tips. Last summer, a friend of mine who I frequently golf with, told me / showed me what she sees me do when I putt. It was very embarrassing- mostly because she exaggerated my movements - I think because she was trying to be funny.
The end result is that I am now very self conscious about putting.
Best putting video I have seen on youtube!!
this is my first year of op36 and on top of my learning this really helps
Excellent tips Chris. Each one makes so much sense.
Thanks Norman,
These intros are some of my favorites in the Goof CZcamsr-verse. Can't wait for this putting lesson.
Great reminders. Great video. The only thing I don't do in this is draw a line on my ball. It's odd but I used to try it when I played comp golf and I found it distracting to the point where it would cause me to hit worse putts. I don't know why but it's just easier for me to have a blank white ball and then pick a spot 8" in front of my ball and roll it over that. If I can't roll the ball over a spot 8" in front of my ball reliably I have _major_ issues.
But that's me, it must be my ADHD or something because to my eye, it changes my stroke. I'm weird, lol.
The line doesn’t work for everyone, but it’s worth trying to see and then if it isn’t working move away from it as you have done. Love the idea of picking a spot through, that’s really a good way to focus on your start line
@@ChrisRyanGolf I love that my phone put good instead of golf, LOL.
Yea, it is harder to pick a spot when greens are spotless but that's rare. Only the nicest courses can do that. Still, for me, that's what works.
Sad part? Took me some 20 years to realize that. Playing the smartest golf in my 30s...too bad I couldn't have done that in my teens when I played comp golf!
Thanks Chris, my putting is a big let down in my game and I'm hoping to gain some points when I play tomorrow! I'll let you know
Excellent video, Chris. I actually understood that. I am away to the putting green. Thanks.
Undoubtedly the best putting tip I have ever used is to look at the hole and just practice a putting stroke letting my eyes tell me how far to put. Brilliant in its simplicity! How did it work? I shaved 5 strokes off my average putts per round! I holed 3 puts of 15' or longer and had only one 3 putt. As always, you break down your instruction to language and reasoning us average golfers can understand and implement. Thanks again!
Really good thorough video!
Chris I track total putts, 3 putts, 2 putts, 1 putts, up and downs. Love your videos.
4 great tips for putting 👍
Stable lower body. One tip for checking this on the course (where you can't use the stick) is to check your swing with the sun at your back. You'll see if you're moving. Helps if the sun's shining 🤔
Great tips thanks Chris 😀👍
Hi Chris. thank you so much for these wonderful back to Basics videos. I noticed, in some of your PUTTING videos, you place your lead hand lower on the shaft than your trail hand- please explain. much appreciated.
Great and simple video
Very helpful. Thank you 👍
Chris... LOVE the split screen gag. Very clever. BTW, your putting tips are clever too.
Hi Chris
I came off the course today after a horrendous round due to very poor putting.
I have just watched your video and it has given me hope. All the faults you highlighted I was guilty of so on my next round I’m going to give it a go with your simple but superb tips.
Many thanks
Jimmy
The line idea is a good one. Im going to use it
Love that lower body stability exercise , thanks Chris, have really been struggling at 40+ per round !!
Thanks Mike, so easy to do too
Hi Chris, Love your helpful videos! I do track the number of putts I have for each round of golf. I can go back and get a better understanding of whether I am improving over the long term. To help in keeping your body still while putting can standing with your toes pointing a little inward help? Thank you so much!
I've never played golf, I understood all the moves he was explain. I think I can be good at it
You can! Simply follow the process. Putting is the one area of the game where a weekend hack can be as good as a pro. Regardless of age!
I track putts per hole/total putts.. great tips.. over the last year I have shaved 10 strokes off my handicap, and other that hitting the ball 20 yards longer, putting is my current focus..
Great work taking 10 shots off your handicap, that’s some effort.
Thanks for the tips and moreover a routine which I should stick with.I tend to change my thinking every round and hopefully that's normal when you DON'T have a routine.
Thanks so much for these simple putting tips They have transformed my putting to at least two puts every green. Won't be sharing these with my playing partners.
Putting can lower your score so much ... These tips are great! Thank you.
I really struggled with putting last season, it felt like it didn't matter how close to the pin I got it, I was always 3 putting. After watching this video, I found that I was naturally following these recommendations (other than the final process one), but my results weren't there to my satisfaction. I ended up at the end of the season switching my grip to left hand low, and getting a heavier putter and I started to gain confidence, so hopefully this season will see me 2 putting instead of 3 putting and I think I can break 90 for the first time.
I’m rooting for you to break 90. Best of luck.
My course in Arizona has very fast greens - about 13 on the stimp - as a consequence speed control is essential. I have begun metering my putts - pacing off, given speed - the length of backswing is roughly 1 inch to one stride. So a 3 feet/one stride is literally a one inch backswing, etc. Works pretty well to about 30-35 feet; and then relationship seems more challenging. Pros/cons - it's made me a good "dying pace" putter on these very fast greens - if I miss it's not by much on pace. However - it makes you mechanical and technique focused; is there a better way to blend speed control and feel?
Just played 18 holes after watching this. Every. Single. Hole I putted within 2. Great advice.
Ahh man great tips cheers.
I keep putts on each hole to get a total at end of round. This video did help my mental aspect of how I putt. Too many mistakes on my part. Hope this video will help
Helpful good
As requested in your video, I track: number of putts, three putts and feet of putts made; I would like to sink more putts 10 feet and shorter: I seem to miss them usually to the left; hopefully this video will help me make a putting stroke with machine like precision so I can focus on matching the speed with the line taken
Chris I continue to have problems with my putting due to back problems and I'd like to ask if you can you do an instruction video on a broomstick putter and give your views on them - many thanks love your channel :)
I track putts, GIR, and really poor shots. I also “revel” in really good shots and really good putts ( don’t want to get discouraged by just looking at the bad shots). If I get a sand save - I note that, and, if I get up& down off the green - that’s a positive.
I don’t look at the hole as I do practice strokes, but imagine/envision the putt (distance) in my mind.
Hi Chris , great video but what about the actual strike? Hit on the up? Induce top spin? Tap? Thanks
Thank you. I live in Coachella Valley, lots of resort courses. Many of these courses are played by first-timers. There's no way in hell these golfers are going to know the subtleties of the greens. Also, one thing I've noticed watching the pros on TV is that they stand over the putt longer than I do. (I'm normally a fast player). But slowing down and rethinking the line while over the putt has allowed me to make a higher percentage of putts, especially those closer to the hole.
Another great video Chris. I had a nine hole playing lesson with my teacher today and his parting words were “your putting needs work” so this is really timely. I am going to start working on your tips immediately. thanks
Thanks Paul, in theory it should be easier to make changes there, shorter Stoke, slower speed etc
Awesome advice again Chris, what putter are you using, the shaft looks longer at coming at angle into the putter
Hey Neal, this is a Spider X and it 35” long so pretty standard length for me
simple & very effective - track nbr of putts - averaging 2 putts per hole
Only count the putts on the green, I use a shot scope watch which knows when using the putter.
Use shot scope to see how I am progressing but I still fill the card as I go along. Typically two putting as not getting the ball close enough on approaches.
Working on trying to get the ball to be one foot passed if it misses as my typical miss is short
Hi Chris, I have a handicap of 35 but mostly because of my poor putting, I can reach the green in 3 on a par 4 etc. I know practice is the answer but also need your help. Dotti
I'm currently working on putting and have started feeling for grain whilst waiting for my turn. It makes a huge difference on sloping putts over distance
Not something we really have here in the U.K. but I know in other parts of the world it can be huge in terms of how it influences the ball
You guys don't have to worry about the grain? Very interesting.
Great video man, thank you very much for the tips, This will help me a lot. I have an interesting problem, I fade and sometimes slice my woods, and hook my irons, most of the time it is a gentle draw, with my irons, but sometimes it turns into a 40+y hook, same with my woods. Gentle fade turns in to a nasty slice. Please help, I’m in deep trouble, thank you.
The best putting tip was one offered by Jack Nicklaus in Golf Digest years ago. He offered... "The best putting tip is never listen to a putting tip because it isn't working for the guy who gave it to you by the time you try it". Since then Stan Utley, Ben Crenshaw, and Tiger have opened up about how to actually putt. And it is lot more difficult than most people think. That is why only a few people in the world can make their living just playing golf. On a recent TV interview Davis Love says while standing on a practice putting green, "I only hit about 16 million practice putts out here". Lots of truth there too. Remember, you are putting on a tilted plane, and that screws up all logical thinking. SBST becomes the kiss of death.
Golf is such a mentally intensive game.
I've been able to whack a ball 300 yards since I was a 16 year old, but I've never been very good at scoring. Only shot sub-par once in my long life.
Every single shot requires optimal concentration to control the variables that happen during a golf shot.
Great video but would appreciate some tutorial on reading greens, breaks, speed etc
Thanks David will look to get some content like that
Intro is so good got me laughing
My issue with putting is all in the lead hand. I'm having issues finding a grip . I am ok with trail hand which lately I've been trail dominant hand only putting
Thx Chris, I track putts per round 30.xx over past 3 years, % of greens where I 3 putt .. 4% this year, 7% last year..so improved. Shot Scope shot tracker tracks strokes gained vs tour player, 0 handicap, 5 handicap etc. Shot Scope also tracks % of putts made 0 to 3 feet, 3 to 6 feet etc. A good practice putting drill on practice putting green - use 1 ball and play 18 holes long putts, medium putts etc and see how many 2 putts or less you can do in 18 holes.
These are really solid putting techniques and putting tips to take with you - and to keep with you, in your head and repertoir - to the golf course. Just having them and following them, whether you're stroking it well or not, or on the day not reading slope well, or getting much luck or what have you - will keep things together. And probably save you 5 - 8 putts/shots net on average per round for the amateur, I think.
3-putt-bogey is my speciality 👍
I track all of those things through Arccos. Less putts = better score...simple but true.
I often hear that you should use the same tempo for all putts, but the putt distance varies with backswing length and there's a limit to how large the putt backswing can be. I've never seen anyone swing the putter to horizontal, for example. For me, if my backswing is 36" (a lot) and I swing at a neutral 78 bpm, the putt rolls out about 36 feet. To hit a putt longer than that it is necessary to increase tempo. You could do that with a little wrist action, like Seve advised, or by just using a faster tempo, like 90 bpm. My lag putting is horrendous, but something needs to be said about putts longer than the length you get with a neutral tempo and the maximum length backswing that you're comfortable with. What do the best lag putters really do?
Really helpful video, going to put it all to practice when I play today
A few weeks back I scored a gross 80 with 9 three-putts. Very frustrating. Literally throwing shots away. I think my problem is movement of the lower body, leading to the unpredictable heel, toe, middle striking "lottery".
Thanks, Chris.
By no means a pro, but I have found if I push outward with my feet and tense my legs it helps me keep my lower body still.
Wow you must have really struck it well that day, sounds like putting is where you need to focus your practice
@@ChrisRyanGolf yes. It was the best I have struck my irons in at least 10 years. I still have my 1980s blades so they are not forgiving of a bad strike. The good days are magic though.
I have a real mental issue with putting. Can reach the green in regulation on 50-60% of holes, and can’t break 90. My putting is atrocious. I am now beginning to absorb as many tips as possible. Will work on this next time out.
A nice 77 off the stick today with two 3 putt greens... grrr!
Not a pro golfer but I have found to help stop lower body movement. I push my legs outward using my feet. So my legs are tensed prior to putting. Keeps my hips from rotating.
Hey Shaun, love that, brace the legs it’s a great way to help stabilise the legs
@@ChrisRyanGolf thanks. I had a huge problem with rotating my hips. Did it one day and it just worked to still the hip movement. Thanks for the reply.
I miss a lot of 2-3 footers. I become nervous of this length during a round so I tend to lag all my putts - often leaving them short
Hit them harder so they go a foot past if you miss.
Saw a pro tip to practice putting, a bit of timber 2x2x2ft run the toe along the face to practice the stroke then centre the ball on the sweet spot and learn how strong or weak to hit it, place a stone 3 ft in front and see how many times you hit the stone, it works and shows you the angle of the putter when hitting the ball. Good luck
I am struggling to read green to get less puts. Hitting it two hard or not hard enough
I played a tournament a couple of weeks back and had 40 putts in a round of 83 with seven 3-putts. My fairway % was excellent and I was in most GIRs giving me good birdie chances but I wasn't able to putt anything and by the end of the round my confidence had gone really low. I think my game would really improve if I can just work out the putting. But I just don't get it. I'm missing easy 3 foot putts and am leaving all the long putts short because I'm worried about going past the hole. I'm just not able to get a stable and smooth putting swing. What can I do to just get my average putting strokes down?
It really depends my guy, playing at different courses is trickiest thing. My suggestion is practice on the practice green before shorter and longer puts before your round check how slow or fast the green is. The course I play at mainly doesn’t even have a putting green or anything so it’s just trial and error on the first few holes it gets pretty bad. Other courses I really try to show up 10 min earlier to try the practice green and feel the speed. Hope that helps, I’m terrible at putting so I can’t give any tips on that 😂
Get a Scotty Cameron. Great feeling club. Excellent feedback from off center putts. You feel something on the toe or heel. And it feels, the way Colin Montgomerie describes, as swinging through the ball as if it's not there on a center putt.
Here's how I evaluate putting. LONG PUTTS (22+ ft): How many did I leave within 10% of the original distance. MEDIUM PUTTS (10-21 ft): How many did I leave a Tap-In. SHORT PUTTS (3-9 ft): How many did I hole. Total all of those up and calculate a TOTAL PUTTING SUCCESS %. Should be above 70%.
Another technique that is not new but has gained some steam recently is "heads up" takes the focus on the hole and distance to another level.
Mmm on in regulation then three bloody putts is my problem hence why my hcp remains in the Low 20s.
Hi Ryan, would you be able to show your viewers how to find the centre of the putter face.
I'm not a teaching pro but I discovered something that works for me. We've all heard the "rock your shoulders" technique taught by most everyone. My stroke is no different than a full swing other than the obvious that it's short. Instead of concentrating on rocking your shoulders, which for me makes my stroke inconsistent in length & causes distance control issues. I concentrate on using my back muscles rather than shoulders. It's a 1 piece stroke no different than the full swing takeaway with the chest which keeps you connected. There's no body movement other than transferring the rocking motion to your back rather than shoulders. It keeps the face square & really helps with center-face contact as well as distance control because your arms can't move independently creating inconsistent stroke length, keeps the face on line easier & also takes the wrists out of the stroke. This is pretty much the same as DeChambeau uses but he has a long putter locked against his arm which I doubt I could do, but, I've never tried a long putter. Give this a try & see if it helps center face contact & distance control. Sorry; I can't read the putts for you! Be Well!
Parallax error. When I put a line on my ball it and have the line on the ball going to my intended target, when I address the putt the line looks like its pointing left. No matter what I do the line (when correctly aimed) looks left of target. It does my head in!!
I am a 25 handicap but usually am between 25 and 35 putts for 18 holes
avg putts per round -- I am terrible at judging how far I am from the hole .. so I pace it out while I am checking the low side so I can see if I have an uphill or downhill putt.. If I don't have a number in my head .. I am doomed (mostly).
Is it legal to switch to a different ball when you get on the green?
Unfortunately it is yes, the same ball must be used for the entire round
I consistently two putt but off the tee and fairways are really inconsistent. Eg. Played 9 holes Sunday and parred 4 holes, two putted every hole and still carded a 47. 🤷♂️
Putting in good shape then, at least you know where to focus your practice
@@ChrisRyanGolf thanks for the reply Chris. I’ve replace all my long irons for hybrids. 5,4,3 & 2.
No problem with them off the fairway or tee (50/50) it’s the others that seem to be broken 😂
Sirxion Divide is the best putting ball
