- And now for something that completely deviates from my normal uploads on this channel. This is the (full) documentary on the making of The Muppet Christmas Carol that aired on ABC during the broadcast of Winnie the Pooh and Christmas Too. I am well aware someone already uploaded this, however, that video is missing the first 45 seconds, so here is the full broadcast.
Holy crap, I had no idea that this was Brian Henson's directorial debut. Adapting a classic tale that's been told and retold countless times into what many people consider THE BEST version of the story? Just... wow...
Holy crap, Bobsheaux!!! But yeah, muppets christmas Carol is probably one of the best adaptations of the story from the gothic horror elements to the costumes and using actual quotes from the book. And having Gonzo as Charles Dickens serving as a Greek chorus just adds to it. There are some elements they changed from the book, but it works for the movie
Here's a fun fact: Brian directed the action/fight scenes in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film from 1990.

Man that whistle sounding jingle that used to play over the blue Disney castle that would play before every film is so nostalgic for me.
Nothing is funnier to me than Kermit taking every opportunity he can get (BTS, talk shows, etc) to emphasize that he and Miss Piggy have a “purely professional” relationship
I've always loved that the muppets were treated like actual actors. "Kermits nephew Robin playing Tiny Tim" along with puppet cast interviews. Gets me every time!
Every Christmas morning my siblings and I watch this movie while opening stockings, waiting for my parents to wake up. It's been a tradition since I was a kid, it's just not Christmas without this movie
I watch this every Christmas Eve. One more sleep til Christmas. :)

It’s easily my favorite of the muppet movies, and the good messages threaded throughout hit harder the older I get.
One of the best film versions of this famous Christmas tale.

Fun Fact: Steve Whitmire admitted that he was nervous about taking over as Kermit the Frog following Jim Henson’s death. The night before production began for this movie, he had a dream that he met Jim Henson in a hotel lonby. When he told Jim his fears, Jim assured him he’d do just fine, and he most certainly did! Too bad he got fired from that in 2017. Matt Vogel’s Kermit voice is decent, if a bit nasally 🐸
No one did Kermit better than Steve and Jim.
My kids (who are in their 20's) and I always watch this wonderful film during our Christmas celebrations. It just brings out the child in us all. If you've never seen this I implore you to rent it, it's magical!

I LOVE this version of A Christmas Carol! It's close to the original story, with bits of humor thrown in. Gonzo and Rizzo were great narrators.
I had no idea that the guy who played Little Enos in Smokey and The Bandit did the music for The Muppet Christmas Carol.
I finished reading the Jim Henson biography by Brian Jay Jones, and it's fantastic. Highly recommend! Jim really cared about his family and the people he worked with. He always saw their work as a collaborative effort.
This movie has one of my favourite Miss Piggy moments. “And I’m about to raise you right off the roof, and-oh” haha
What a wonderful version! And the only Muppet project where I didn't actually despise Miss Piggy.
There was a time when people didn’t know what green screen was.
Disney needs to bring back Brian he made some classics this and muppets in space. Classics.
He produced Muppets from Space, he didn't direct it.
I always remember Miss Piggy's response to her small part.
Frank Oz was becoming increasingly busier directing movies to play his characters.
Frank Oz was an executive producer on this movie, and, after directing “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” he probably had a hand in bringing on Michael Caine to be Scrooge.

@@ItWILLbeWONDERFUL_THERE According to Brian Henson and others, Steve was overly demanding which went back to the 90s. He would say "I am Kermit now so make me happy because Kermit is the Muppets. Brian also felt that Kermit became flat and one dimensional. To Brian Kermit was not the jokester he was created as.
Ultimately there is a standard that should always be followed with the Muppets. Steve should not have let ego stand in the way of what Jim had created back in the 60s.
@@kjemradio That doesn’t sound like Steve but I guess you can’t always tell with some people. To me he seems like a very nice person and if he made a few mistakes it’s not a big deal.
@@kjemradio i don't know about you guys but kermit works best for me when he's the straight man amongst a sea of jokers as it was with the muppet show.
I love the Muppets so very much. If there's a muppet heaven I like to be there when my time has come some day.

I see them doing it, but I JUST don't get how they do it. Especially when you have to work off of a monitor where things are flipped. I tried CZcams before and couldn't get the hang of where to point to elements on screen.
Somewhere on CZcams there's a detailed video showing how Big Bird is operated. It's insane the amount of coordination it takes.
Anyone here think that Walt Disney and Jim Henson would have been the best of friends in real life? They're so much alike
I don't think Henson would be appreciative of Walt's antisemitism.
I do feel that they would've been pretty good friends. Heck, maybe they are now up there. We miss you guys. Have fun making more magic in the clouds.
@Jonathan Pal It wasn't Disney that backed out of the deal, it was Henson's estate, and we wouldn't even have Muppet Vision 3D if wasn't for Frank Oz convincing them that without the world would never see Jim's final performance as Kermit.

This was the first adaptation of A Christmas Carol I ever saw. I was pretty young when it first came out so back then though I didn't know it was based on a book despite the constant mentions of it and just thought it was an original story made for the Muppets. Same with Treasure Island. But then I saw the Mickey Mouse and Rankin/Bass Productions versions. In recent years I started a new little Christmas tradition. Watching one adaptation of the story a day from the beginning of December until Christmas day in which I watch the Muppet version, my favorite. Though after watching so many versions. I kinda wish they did a few things differently for The Muppet Christmas Carol:
1. Add Scooter. Even though his performer just died, they could've had Scooter as a background character
2. Scrooge's sister was completely omitted. I thought she was an important part because it seemed Scrooge's heart started to get cold when his sister died giving birth to his nephew Fred. No background information of his family is mentioned at all.
3. Give Annie Sue Pig a part. Annie Sue could've played Martha Cratchit, the oldest of the Cratchit children. Her performer Louise Gold was involved, so I don't get why they didn't include Annie Sue.
4. More Fozzie Bear. He played Fozziwig and they showed him as an old man, They could've done him twice by having portray Fozziwig's son.
5. More Muppets. Just like Scooter they should've had Hilda, Newsman, Mildred, Brewster, Miss Mousey, Nigel, Wayne, Wanda, Zelda Rose, and Vicki make cameo appearances
@Anthiny DeNofa: I like your number one fact best. In fact, I think Brian Henson should choose Kevin Clash to take over a few of Richard Hunt's characters including Scooter, Statler and Bean Bunny's brother Lugsy Bunny because Kevin and Richard's voices sound similar. Can you imagine that?

I have always wanted to know how they made this movie. Particularly this last time I watched it.
This is my favorite version of Christmas Carol. Caine really brings scrooge to life. For the first time in any Muppets movie, I have to say the Muppets are the worst part of the movie. I'm not saying the Muppets are bad, I like them, but the rest of the movie is so great that it outshines them. Other Muppets movies, the Muppets are the redeeming factor, this movie would be just as great without the muppets

Richard Hunt should have lived with his character to be in this Muppet movie. Especially Scooter. Come to think of it as I watch this clip I thought I saw Richard Hunt in that group of Muppet performers.
He died the day after I was born.

You're right - well spotted! I read somewhere that they used a tank of baby oil at first, but found it was too complicated to maintain, so they switched to a water tank.

They made the puppet, then suited up the puppeteer in a green scuba suit, had them jump in a tank of water with a green screen, and do the scenes, then dubbed the voice later.
