Two major reasons this song should've been kept:
    1. It shows Scrooge's pain regarding this memory significantly better. The very fact he starts singing along with her lets the audience know how hurt he is by this and how he's been hanging on ever since it happened since he remembers the lyrics so effortlessly.
    2. The ending song, The Love We Found, hits way harder since it's a reflection of this song and shows the peace Scrooge finally came to.

I was 6 when this movie came out, and it taught me that Michael Caine is a BOSS. This scene was no small part of that, even then. I understood that "Goodbye forever" was a really sad thing, and it also proved he had a heart in there because I could see it breaking *again* for something from so long ago.

Kids are fully capable of recognizing the feeling and deep meaning of a scene even if they lack the life experience to fully empathize.

As someone who had a VHS version of this film with the song growing up, I was absolutely gutted when I found out it was cut from most later versions. I'll never understand it. This is one of the most powerful emotional moments in the film --- not to mention one of the most important moments in Scrooge's life. Not only does "The Love We've Found," not make sense without it, but this scene doesn't even really make sense either. He says, "I love you, Belle," she says, "You did once," and then leaves, and we see Rizzo crying. It's all very abrupt, and completely changes the feeling of the scene. A moment that's supposed to be heartbreaking and emotional just ends up feeling... chilly.

this scene was so perfect because it really shows Scrooge's character depth. You see young Scrooge leave so you assume "oh he must have never really loved her"
THEN you see old Scrooge try to sing along as almost as if it's like an old song they shared as a couple and despite years of not hearing it, he does remember it. This indicates that he does remember Belle. He does remember loving her deeply and upon seeing his reaction, he does deeply regret letting her go

It's a classic and the story is focused on Scrooge's emotional transformation. This song helps us see this and children can have a couple minutes to contemplate emotions that they might not ordinarily. 2:43 is very good directing. You can clearly see young Scrooge is in a catch 22 situation. He had to choose what he most wanted: Belle or his money. And he simply choose money over his own domestic partner by walking away. The present day Scrooge has strongly implied to have remembered to what he had done after so many years and he breaks down in guilty for being selfish. And even though he redeemed nothing can ever heal the pain Scrooge caused himself. In other words he is left to live with for what he had done until he dies.

I feel fortunate to have grown up with this not being cut. I do admit it made me cry every time. As a musician it works so well musically. As an artist it works so well contextually and thematically it's a disservice to cut it and rob everyone of one of the most visceral points of the story. He let romantic love get away to focus on greed for money. This scene and song truly depicts heartbreak in hindsight. It should be learned through this as to avoid direct experience if possible. Plus it's just such an epic apex of writing and execution of music and cinema combined it's deeply a tragedy to have lost it on modern audiences. I think they just thought it was too heavy for kids but in a world where maturity equals violence it's a welcome yet subtle peek into adulthood that can advantageously be appreciated.

Hell, the makers didn't have any problem with Martina McBride doing a version of When Love Is Gone for the end credits - why cut _this_ version out?

Hell, even the bridge! She comes onto the bridge from one direction with Young Scrooge on the left side, and Michael Caine's Scrooge approaches from the right and NEVER crosses the bridge because he can't go backwards in life to a time where this mistake could be fixed...It's all amazing

I never saw the film with the song included, I never even knew it existed until I discovered the scene a few years back on YT. But even without knowing there was a song cut, I always found the transition weird. She just says "you did once" and then leaves. No explanation, no goodbye, no emotion, nothing. It made Rizzo's sudden burst into tears over something as trivial and unemotional as that seem all the more exaggerated.
I always found it strange that a movie that's so well-constructed would give so little thought to the most important part of the story... the break-up of Scrooge and Belle. Turns out it DID give the scene a lot of thought.
I can see some people finding this song boring, it's definitely not in the same style as the rest of the movie. But even so, it's essential in my view. So essential, that it was missed without even knowing it existed. Very good that they found it!

Yeah, the scene makes more sense with the song in it. With Scrooge saying “I love you, Belle”, and Belle saying “ you did once” without her transitioning to the song, it comes off more as just her saying “🤬 you.” And walking away. It’d be like if in Bambi, they showed the clip of Bambi and his mom eating the new spring grass, and just cutting straight to the part where the Great Prince says “your mother can’t be with you anymore”. Or if in The Lion King, if the gorge scene started with Scar tricking Simba about the quote-on-quote “surprise” and then just cutting away to him telling Simba to run away. But, with the song included, this gives this scene the emotional punch it’s supposed to have, especially given that a major part of the story of A Christmas Carol is that the pain of Scrooge’s breakup with Belle played a big part in turning him into a stingy cheapskate.

I really do not understand the other comments but Thank you! Thank you ever so much for this scene! The moment Scrooge truly begins to change, is within this song. The end song even contains the same motif and they decided to cut it. That is very disappointing. Thank you for posting this

A total and utter mistake to remove from the film. We saw it at the cinema, laughed our asses off and cried at this bit. I've taught text about 10 times now and each time, I've missed being able to use this. It made no sense as the edit went to Rizzo crying from the previous scenes. Great to see it alive and well here. This is arguably 'the' single most important part of the reason why he goes so cold and becomes the right fisted, hand to the grindstone we all know him to be.

This is the only Scrooge Christmas movie I like with the Muppets. It's the best one ever put out.

Thank you for putting this online. This is my favorite Christmas movie and this cut really hurts. There was little reason for it. I am grateful it still exists somewhere. A bad call.

Who else is opening this video in the middle of the movie since Disney decided to scrub this song from all modern versions of it, for some reason?

Watched this movie the other night and was gutted to see this song taken out! It was one of the most important songs in the movie. Emotional even to my child self back then

This scene came up in the GCSE exam this morning. The question the students had to write an essay on was based on how Dickens shows the way that greed spoils things for people. Oh my word, how I would love to have a go at that, given this song to help me picture the emotion of the scene and then write about the content and context. Bravo AQA.

It's on Disney + in the Extras section! I always pause the movie at that scene, then go to the extras to watch it, then back to the movie. A bit cumbersome but I have to watch that scene.

Yes, I always pause the movie before this scene and pull up this clip on my iPad so that I can see the complete movie. It’s not the same movie without this scene. Thank You So Much!!

Amazon's version is like that too. I need to bite the bullet and try to find a decent VCR so I can use my VHS next year.

Scrooge: Spirit show me no more. Why do you delight in torturing me?
Spirit: I told you these are the shadows of things that have been. That they are what they are, do not blame me!
    Scrooge: Leave me!

The way present Scrooge looks at her... he loved her and realizes he screwed up. This clearly always haunted him & now he's become an old man, filled with regret, waiting to die alone.

Can't believe this has been cut from some versions. This is the strongest moment in the movie for me.

This is a true example of a movie that gets better as you get older. As a kid you love seeing the Muppets of course and Scrooge’s redemption. But as an adult, with experiences of your own, it hits you right where it hurts, and I love it.

Before this, Meredith Braun was one of the original Eponines in Les Mis, meaning she's two for two on *making me weep like a baby.*

The scene simply does not even work without this song. Nor the resolution in the “the Love We Found.”

Justice at last. We finally have our widescreen cut of the film. First on Disney Plus, and with luck, all future home video releases. Fans: We did it!

Oh right the full version is under extras. They should do that with Star Wars and have the original cuts of the films under extras on Disney+.
