This definitely ranks as one of the greatest. No delays in between points or questionable medical time outs and/or leaving the court at the end of a set was an advantage.
I like rafter but he said many times he should have won or that he really expected to win. Really this was one of the closest Wimbledon finals both in terms of score line and in terms of the two opponents’ overall skills.
Put this one in a time capsule and let aliens know what humans were about. Because this, to me, is still one of the greatest finals in tennis history and certainly top 3 of all time at Wimbledon - not just quality but the history and story behind the final. It's so incredibly meaningful and emotionally charged. Almost starting to well up myself just writing this...
If someone watch this for the very forst time it would be just like any other 5 setter final. But what make this final historic is the story behind it and how many time goran lost to sampras and agassi.
Wow, it's true.. really its a monumental. It still reverberates in my ears ,the marvelous speech of Ivanis after winning his Wimbledon which I watched live. I seldom revind this nostalgic feeling
fundhund62 I completely agree. The match was pretty average in quality of play. However, I could watch this again and again for the atmosphere and because of how much it meant to both players. Goran’s reaction after he won is why we love sports
Understanding Goran's backstory, wild card entry, the crowd, and the way it ended gave us one of the most heartwarming and wonderful Wimbledon Finals of all time. No matter how many times I've seen this final, that moment brings tears to my eyes.... EVERY TIME!
Even with the success of Andy Murray, there has never been another match at Wimbledon where this type of crowd participation was so much a part of the experience.

The Italians can be melodramatic and also tsitsipas has a quality somewhat like goran but Greek style. So many players are lacking that charisma and press conferences are so sterile compared to the days of muster, chang, goran and rafter
So much history in this match...People's Monday, Goran's finally triumphing at Wimbledon and the end of an era, the last final between two serve-and-volley players.
I was there. The queue was already so big on Sunday evening that I joined the queue then to ensure that I got a space. Totally unprepared, I slept in the park with just an old blanket from out the boot of my Dad's car. Not a good night's sleep. I was exhausted by the time I got into the ground. The rush to Centre Court once into the ground was crazy.
This is one of the greatest finals ever, with one of the greatest comeback via a wildcard. I was so happy for Goran and Pat Rafter was/is a great bloke and great opponent.
At the time I lived in Croatia, I wasn't a tennis fan, had never watched a match in all of my life but Ivanisevic's journey at Wimbledon was so interesting and fascinating that I decided to watch this historical final: from this moment I felt in love with tennis and still I am. After more than 20 years I think it was one of the best finals ever. Never give up like Goran, keep working hard and your dreams will come true!
not just an all-time final. the fact that he got so close so many times, entered this as a WILDCARD, and still won, is by far the most insane win tennis has ever seen. The pressure he was feeling in that last game would hospitalize most people.
Injuries got in the way. 2002 with bouncier turf may have helped but Hewitt would have been the favourite nonetheless. A 30 yo rafter against young federer may have been good but probably a lost cause for the gallant aussie
Any player who wins at Wimbledon is a great player. Who says anything else has no idea. This final was one of the best in terms of atmosphere, tension mood and drama. Goran Ivanisevic was one of the best grass players of the 1990s. He was 125th in the worldranking 2001 and won the most important tournament in the world. Nice that he still managed to be on the list of winners. He was also one of the best servers in the world. The lack of nerve strengh has often damaged him.
I was in Coventry that year. That day I was supposed to discuss my postgrad thesis with my tutor, a lady named Alison. Instead, we listened to this match on BBC radio together. She was for Goran and I was for Pat 😂. Quite an experience.
Good decision. Perhaps she liked the bad boy as pat has great sportsmanship and a more complete game. I had sentimental reasons for supporting Goran from as early as the 1992 final. He is lucky to be in the hall of fame along with roddick and chang... but it is just one set of opinions by ex pros and the trophies are far more known to the everyday sports fan.
Best crowd ever at wimbledon. It's mostly aussie :) everyone is wearing afl jumpers, sooo good. As an aussie this was a proud day, even though pat lost. I would much rather goran to win now that I know his amazing tennis story at wimbledon. Pat has 2 gs' anyway.
I remember my dad rooting for Ivanisevic because in the past he had rooted against him so many times when he faced Agassi and Sampras and Ivanisevic had lost so many excruciating close matches at Wimbledon. Such a great match and memories! 😀😀😀👍
Yep. Goran Ivanisevic and his wildcard vs Pat Rafter. One of the greatest Wimbledon finals ever played based on the storyline of none other than Goran Ivanisevic 🙏🏾. When he won that game set and match, i was in tears.

One of the best & greatest match ever. Perhaps the greatest match ever in terms of crowd's involvement due to the presence of Aussie Cricket team. This match didn't deserve a loser but won by the Wildcard Crowd's Favourite "People's Champion" the one & only Goran Ivanisevic
sure, he won the final (one of my favourite wimby finals) but what makes this sucess even more special is the list of his opponents before the final: jonsonn, moya, roddick, rusedski, safin, henman and then came the final with pat rafter. jonsson..ok no big deal, moya was clay court player but a year before he was no.1, but the other guys were great players in those days and most of them were grass court specialists like rusedsky or henman. so the draw for the wildcard was extremly tough. amazing! and Pat..such a gentleman, was happy for Goran too :)
Goran and Djokovic. My two favourite players. And Goran still so gorgeous. Watched this game then with Goran playing his heart out. And watching it now after Novak's win. 💞💌
wow. when Goran was serving at 6-7 in the 5th, love 30, it looked like he might've foot faulted, which would've given Rafter 3 match points. but let the players decide the match with the racquets. Goran, Chang and Agassi. those were my dudes in the 90's. Rafa Roger in 08, Roger Roddick in 09, and Novak Roger last year were good finals, but this one was the last great Wimbledon final. First come first serve Monday crowd, soccer style cheering on every point. No smartphones running people's lives. And Goran finally gets the W.

No. They both were at the end of their careers and they had nothing more to give. But this is a match to remember and the final price to Ivanisevic's journey. But I was for Pat...still my tennis hero (sorry Roger)
