    Remember guys that i cover specifically The Forgotten Realms, the official but kinda unofficial setting for 5th Edition D&D. There are other monsters which do have higher CR than these that i have presented today but they come from books not specifically directed towards this setting. I will however cover them for the sake of full completion on my next video.

If you wanna read about it its the drow series (six part) with titles like annihilation and extinction. I would recommend the entire forgotten realms series. Especially anything by Greenwood or Salvatore. Fun fact, the Bone Dragon isn't a "bad guy". Much like his patron goddess mystra he understands balance(unlike Tchazzar who is basically trump as a dragon heh, those thay novels that cross into Tchazzar I think by Philip Athans? Are excellent as well.

      Lolth is more about cunning than pure chaos though.
      In Menzoberranzan, a major city drow, there is a semblance of order, and even rankings between houses.
      In order to move up in the ranks, you have to kill ALL nobles of one of the houses above you. But if you fail to do so, the entire city will march to destroy your house as a sign of "drow justice".

      By what is in cannon Faerun lore, that is max but there’s 3 types of dragons part of D&D (likely will end up in next episode) that can overcome and in one type’s case dwarf the CR of this thing. The first two:
      Force Dragon; CR 13-59
      They are immune to force, eventually turn permanently invisible and nearly indestructible because they become pure force.
      Prismatic Dragon: CR 14-66
      They have insane durability like the force but they also have all of the prismatic and light based spells on call as spell like abilities. Immunity to light based attacks and blindness.
      and the current highest CR I’ve seen:
      Time Dragon; CR 26-90
      They are op. The babies start out as huge size creatures, and CR 26. As they grow they physically have Time distortions constantly affecting them (perma haste, aura of slow, at will stop time) and when they reach great wyrm, they can actually Time travel backwards in time if they want.

    You see, this is the thing I tend to get a bit bend out of shape about in DnD. A lot of "antagonists" of the settings or even some heroes tend to have more playspace than players themselves. I get the idea is Roleplay but part of it is roleplaying other aspects other than "I swing swords. I cast spell". Players rarely get a chance or setting to make proper monuments to their achievements, they aren't allowed to create their own items or even have their own place in the world. I get it for simple campaigns such as tomb of annihilation or storm king's thunder but the lack of rules or allowance to let players do their thing is just sad at times.
    I would like there to be things such as being able to make your own spells and items proper...not so obscenely difficult to the point it isn't possible. Then again I am weird in that regard, I have a love for the concept of a campaign where there is no ultimate goal set before the players but more just an open world frolick into various places where the adventures just happen. I mean ofcourse the DM would have to drop some reasons for them to happen but still...something in me hungers for a world where you can at some point look back and go "I made my mark"

    • @XekCho
      @XekCho Před 4 lety +6

      You are not strange in that regard as I love it whenever a player asks me as a DM if what a character desires to do to leave their mark on my homebrew world with the only real impediment I put in the way is no worse than what any normal adventurer would face albeit in a far more self-directed fashion.

    • @jamesmartin8005
      @jamesmartin8005 Před 4 lety +8

      What you are describing? is dungeons and Dragons. Its not a fault of the a system, but I think of the GM's you've played under. Or the pre-written campaign source books. Any D&D game can have everything you've described and a lot of them do to some degree or another.
      I think the main issue you bring up is the lack of any clear rules for spell creation or magic item creation. However a GM with the time to do so, can homebrew their own mechanics into the game for it, and i think that might have been the point of not setting the rules in stone in a book on how to accomplish that.
      My advice? Run your own game and find some players who want to have the type of game you envision. Or keep searching for a GM who runs things that way yourself. Best of luck and good journeys!

    Thank you for covering 3.5 and older material. You really help me out since i prefer playing 3.5 than 5e. You're one of the few who talk about it in a way i understand it. Plus the lore coverage is way more in depth than any others.

    I imagine FR having a major power with motivation "wants to bone again" just fits.
    Has he tried talking to Tiamat? She might be into extra-powerful dragons to take over the multiverse.
    Also, wouldn't one need to spelljam to get to Greyhawk to even know of Mordenkainen's disjunction?

      Yeah I figure he would eventually realize that by becoming a deity he could produce offspring and considering that Tiamat has heads of each chromatic color and he could breathe the breath attack of each color it would make sense for the two of them to combine forces.

    I would definitely play a game that would involve a future where Daurgothoth succeeds in both of his quests, becoming the ultimate dragon with all spells able to be used as a breath weapon, having all breath weapons, and he has made a race that has inherited all these abilities. That sounds like it would be an epic campaign to play!!!

    Isn't Iolaum the Oracle of Ellyn'taal stronger than the Creeping Doom and with a higher CR as well? Iolaum is an undead Elder Brain Lich Wizard 31/Archmage 5/Netherese Arcanist 5. A regular Elder Brain was CR 25 in 3.5, plus the undead aspect. That's a minimum of CR 66 for Iolaum.

    • @user-nk8ft3nn8z
      @user-nk8ft3nn8z Před 4 lety

      Jon J. Wizard levels would be considered “unassociated” for an Elder Brain, as their innate spellcasting is Sorcerer (or Telepath, if you use psionics). Since Elder Brains have 26 HD, a more “accurate” CR would be 53 - still overwhelmingly high, yes, but at least marginally less than CR 66.

      If you’re interested, the Eberron setting might have something for you. In the sourcebook Dragons of Eberron, true dragons have the option to take a Sovereign Archetype, which replaces the options some dragons have for choosing spells (for example, red dragons can pick spells from the Cleric list, plus a few domains). The relevant Sovereign Archetype would be Passion’s Flame, which gives Perform as a class skill for the dragon and the ability to rage like a barbarian. In addition, the Virtuoso prestige class grants the Inspire Courage bardic music. And since dragons in general tend to have high Charisma and lots of skill points to use on social skills...

      Mason Jones Actually... in Eberron, half-dragons are considered abominations. An elf from a dragonmarked house and a green dragon had a child to unite their species... except they united to wipe the house out of existence.
      That is how House Vol, and it’s Mark of Death, was lost.
      That is why Erandis Vol is a lich - when she was killed, her mother resurrected her as a lich and had some of her allies flee to Khorvaire.
      That is how the Blood of Vol and the Emerald Claw came to be.

    Mystra was actually good aligned for a time between 2nd and 4th edition, as her portfolio was inherited by a good aligned mortal wizard after the original Mystra was killed. This Mystra though tried to restrict evil casters from using the weave and that lead to her being killed by Shar and Cyric. As of 5e, the newest version of Mystra is back to being neutral.

This Drow Shadow Dragon lore really makes me lean Draconic, and I was theorizing how the background would be anti-Lolith in nature as a secretive assassin character with the Faction Agent background.
