I own a Kindle and very rarely buy ebooks from amazon - I load the books from other stores into Kindle via a program called Calibre. It's not super user friendly but it's made me stick to my Kindle even when I don't wanna support Amazon!
"everything that we do creates waste" hit me so hard - a fantastic thought proccess from Ariel about accepting we will not be 100% perfect in being enviromentally friendly.

I also load a lot of epubs and pdfs into my Kindle and you don’t even need an app for that - they have a “send to kindle” section on Amazon site and you just choose the files you want to upload and that’s it. They just show up on your Kindle. So I don’t buy books from Amazon but still enjoy using my Kindle.

If you’re donating books to a library or other institution/organization, it’s important to call them first to ask what they will and will not accept so that your trip isn't wasted. Here are some general guidelines:
Books must be in good to excellent condition. No water damage or stains, no torn pages or missing pages, no loose bindings, no mildewy smells or mold or insect infestation. Believe it or not, people actually donate books that fit these descriptions. Also, if you’re donating travel guides, health books, computer books, etc., they must be less than 8 years old because the info in these types of books changes so rapidly. Basically, ask yourself if YOU would buy the books you’re donating. 📚

I’m usually a silent viewer, but I wanted to take the time to comment and say that I really love and appreciate how thorough Ariel is in her answers/responses and even how tangential she can get with them. I think the heart of any good podcast or conversation is the willingness to dive deeper and really ‘go there’ on a topic and although Raeleen tends to offer more succinct advice, her ability to ask explorative questions makes her an awesome co-host. This was another great episode and I also want to say congrats on such a huge patreon milestone!

For the girl with too many books, this is what I've been doing and it's been working for me so far :) I've been combing my shelves and I put the random books I've had for years and never read and don't have any attachment to/don't even know if I want to read it into a box, and I'm picking my reads from there. If I start a book and don't feel it or don't see myself liking it in the future for whatever reason, it goes into the sell/donate pile, and any that I do enjoy go back to the shelves. In doing this, I've found a book I love and didn't expect to that I've had for years and almost gave away without reading, I've read a book I've been procrastinating reading and enjoyed it, and I've parted with some books I've been hanging onto that weren't worth it. Then I just do a brief re-checking of the pile before I take it to the bookstore; I also keep the box relatively small and manageable as I go through the shelves. It's helping me cull my selection pre-move :) also I've found that separating books from my shelves into a sort of probationary box helps me get used to the idea of not having them on the shelves anymore without having to make a big leap, and I find that I'm not as disappointed to get rid of them as I thought I'd be if the time to part with them does come.
    Edit: typos

This is an excellent idea. I have so many books that fit this category. You know how you hear about a book and you keep seeing it and you find yourself so compelled to purchase it and read it "soon" but before you know 5 years or longer have passed and it goes untouched. And often in my case I didn't really hear it about but saw in a store (used or new) and the cover caught me. I really need to try your approach. ☺

Fresh and youthful when paired with earthy browns and dramatic when paired with deep reds and plums, the Pantone Color of the Year 2024 opens the door to a wide assortment of lipstick, blush, skin tone, and contouring options”

I love what Raeleen said about reading in public. A couple of weeks ago I enjoyed a totally random conversation with a woman (also a reader) at the dentist office (of all places!) About a large TBR ... To me a TBR is not the same as just the sum of all my unread books.
I always have a short list of the next 5 books I want to read. Never more because a longer list gives me stress. I use storygraph for this.
These are books I have chosen deliberately, not books that have been added automatically just because I have bought them.
Also one of my goals is ... Read more books then I have bought. Which means extra book buying means I need to read more than that. Really helps to shorten a TBR.

I read at work most days and a girl who I had never spoken to before started talking to me because she was reading the same book as me at the same time. Now whenever I see her we chat all things bookish. This has happened to me in two different jobs as well. It's a great ice breaker and requires little effort.

For others unsure about how to get rid of books in a better sustainable way esp in LA I have some suggestions.
The Los Angeles public library takes donations. In fact many libraries have used book sales & some have to cancel due to not having enough books. Check your local library.
Used books stores as well. They usually only take appointment though for a certain amount. Check out The Open Book (multiple locations) previously $5 or less bookstore & $10 or less bookstore. Pulp Fiction is another I’ve seen, but haven’t been to since it’s out of my way.
Any donation centers always take books like goodwill, Salvation Army, hope of the valley, etc.
Little free libraries, ask schools, or park centers. Leave one or two inside a work break room.

I've owned a Kindle since 2015 and the only reason that I keep it is because I have hundreds of unread books on it from pre-2018, my library does allow e-books to be read on a kindle and I can also send Netgalley arcs to it. For the write-in about owning an overwhelming number of books: I think that dividing up your books might be helpful. The irony of loving books and wanting to be surrounded by them but also feeling trapped in a space with all the reminders of your book buying can be intense. Some of the CZcamsrs I watch keep a book closet or cart, and I think this could be a solution to your obstacle. Now, if you desire to get rid of the books I totally get it. However, in the event that these books bring you joy, maybe you can simply relocate them. An area for books that you are not interested in reading currently or just a place that could be decorated with books might help to take the weight off. If you don’t have lots of space, maybe you can push some of the books you really want but aren’t ready to read yet to the back of your shelf and double stack with the more exciting reads on the front. I’m not sure if that helps, I just wanted to advocate for keeping books that you love.

BUT since then, money for expandable income became fewer and book prices in my country (Brazil) sky rocket! So now, I almost don't have any other option. I went 3 or 4 years without buying a single physical book. I gave myself 5 books this Christmas, but I know that it is all I can afford for another year! XD

I think it depends on the library system. When I lived in Tampa Florida all the libraries had little shops and took donations. I moved to Raleigh NC and they don’t have little book shops, don’t take donations, AND they don’t do annual sales. all the books are sold online and are not really a deal.

For Rachel and her favorite book bummers: Your experience kind of sounds like mine when I transition between favorites. Like, I find a subgenre and I love it so then I find and read as many books as I can in that subgenre (while reading other things too of course), but then something changes. It's easy when I find a new exciting topic to chase and I just kind of forget about the old one, but sometimes that's not the case. Sometimes I just slowly enjoy the subgenre less and less and I'm confused bc I'm like "Hey, these are my favorites". It's confusing bc a lot of time it's even hard to see what's happening bc I'm right in the middle of it and kind of painful even bc I'm not necessarily ready to let them go. To me, Rachel, it sounds like you are in the very beginning stages of those books not being your favorites anymore, but it's also still too soon to let them go.

This is a possibility with the kindle. Project Gutenberg has kindle books available for free. In fact The blue castle is one of them. Here where I live in the states we can get kindle books through some of our libraries. However for those who don't have that or if the book you want to read isn't available through you library. Try looking it up and you should be able to find access that doesn't support Amazon. Hope this helps. Also a recomdation for a postive book on marriage, motherhood and womanhood in general. Of mess and Moxie by Jen Hatmaker.

While I appreciate Ariel’s commentary on the ereader vs physical book issues, I feel like the person who asked about this wasn’t talking about the environmental issues of owning an ereader vs books. It sounded like they just hate Amazon and don’t want to support them (rightfully so imo). Amazon is trying their hardest to make it so indie authors go to them first, trying to make other big bookshop and indies close their doors and just overall trying to have a book monopoly. That’s why books are cheaper on Amazon. They’re selling them at a loss so others can’t compete with them and the consumer buys from them because why wouldn’t you??
They’re just pure evil and supporting them sucks!! I get their frustration, which is why I agree with Raeleen about selling it and getting a Kobo.

Until the truck gets painted, you could call it “Haku”cos it's white! Or “Minn” (or Mim? idk the spelling) which is the white mini Totoro's name 🤍😂

If your truck had girl energy you could have called it Nova (as in nova scotia) but even so, Nova could be a gender-neutral name. Outside of that, I think Felix is a cute mini-truck name. Or George after your man George Orwell. Or Gilbert after gilbert in Anne of Green Gables. Your bookmobile could be called Gilbert of Green Fables!

my advice for the first caller at least for the future, is to actually utilize the library app, it depends on which country she is in of course and what app her library uses, my library here in France is not using a nationwide library app, and the digital selection is horrible!!! nothing in English and the French stuff is horrible, but my library back in California uses Libby, and there are ways to "save" or "tag" a book, so you have it in a list, second read the text that is available, I never place a hold on a book until I read the text available on the library app to see if I would even like it or not, usually it's the first couple of chapters. As for long holds, like the ones where you have to wait 12 weeks before you can get it, go to the section of the app to see what's in the "available right now" section while you are waiting for the one you really want, you might find a sleeper hit, lol. Also, I don't buy anymore books until I've read it on my library app, not even if I think the cover is absolutely gorgeous, I just don't do it anymore, too expensive, and I don't have the space for books I don't absolutely love.

    For the Kindle-issue:
I don't know if this is possible, but sometimes when my Kobo struggles to sync with Libby I manually transfer the e-books. Usually I download them to my pc using the Libby website (using the 'read with' feature), then open them in Adobe Digital Editions and/or Calibre. From there I transfer it to my Kobo using an usb/the charger cord. Then just delete the book when finished reading. Don't know if this is possible with a Kindle and I know it can be a bit convoluted, but it's worth looking into! 😊

about the kindle dilemma. i own a kindle and use kindle unlimited and often buy ebooks from amazon. i dont like doing this. but the genre of books i want to read (romance), amazon has a chokehold on it. i love reading indie romances and taboo romances. i cannot find these books elsewhere ethically. so i dont feel too bad about using amazon in this way. i see it as if i COULD i WOULD read these books from other distrubuters but i cant. i also see it as the way ariel said. it shouldnt be on us to be a perfect person. amazon should take responsibility about all the shitty things they do and make it right. im just one small person in this world and if i stopped using amazon there would still be millions of people using amazon. and these books make me incredibly happy. if i couldnt read these books i would be bereft. so thats my opinion on kindle. but i also would like to save some money to buy a kobo so the books that i can find from the library i can actually read on my ereader.

I’ve been considering buying an e-reader for some time now but we have the same thing in the EU where you can’t install libby or overdrive or whatever your library uses unless you are really good at working out the work arounds…. For now i am just reading on my ipad. It’s fine enough for now.

Yep, same! I just bought myself a really basic tablet that I'm using as an 'e-reader' (basic as in, it doesn't have any crazy functions). And I've got the Kindle app on there for books that I previously already bought via Amazon (so I could re-read them if I wanted to). Tbh, it really does the job; I don't feel like I need to buy an e-reader now.

If you are selling books, you probably need a business licence from your municipality. You can probably fill it out online & I bet it's less than $200, renewable annually.

    • @knitnkitten
      @knitnkitten Před 4 měsíci

Also, (if you're not already) you may want to incorporate, for insurance (& tax) purposes. This is under provincial jurisdiction & should be available as an online service - about $50 to Name Search and maybe $200 to register articles of incorporation, depending on your chosen organizational structure. imho, could be worth finding an effective business lawyer you like & trust - it's one of those kinds of professionals who is more helpful as a 'known quantity' on retainer than freaking out trying to find one during the crises when you need one...

To be honest, Rayleen will probably need more than one session of bleach to make her hair white or as light as possible -because she already has dye in her hair. (I'm assuming from the colour of her hair in the video) So it's possible that the hairdresser do not want to do all in the same day to avoid breakage - so she may leave the salon blonde. But just for a few days and hey, enjoy! how many times in life are we able to live crazy experiences right?!
