I'm loving this game so much. I only got a ps4 months ago so I picked up persona 5 and 60 hours in, Royal launched. I picked it up and had to play evertyhing again and I dont regret it. The changes are very, very good. The only bad thing is that the game is much easier than p5.

Very often I see hardcore SMT fans give the story of P5 a hard time and while I respect that view I think the team made an incredible job with the nuances and symbolism of this title. My girlfriend is playing this version of the game and she is a Jungian psychologist. Evertyhing from the Tarot cards arcanas and characters are somewhat based on Carl Jung work about the collective consciousness and archetypes. Everytime she founds a reference and explains it to me my mind is blown hahaha. Yesterday she said that Kasumi character was based on a fairy tale from 1845 "" The Red Shoes" and again I was impressed because Kasumis design is amazing. Great review!
Wow, I actually didn't know that part! Admittedly, the devs are very mum about the series' ties with Jungian psychology, let alone each individual game, so learning about all this really is fascinating! Thank you for sharing!
This was such an amazing review! Probably my favorite of yours that i have watched. I really enjoyed and appreciated how you approached the two games and their differences, and I actually even learned new interesting facts about Persona 5's development! Seeing this video certainly changed my mind about whether I should buy the game again or not. I feel like it rekindled my passion for the game, something that was somewhat lost because of me playing through it multiple times and getting burned out. I don't think I can go back to the original P5 again. I'm loving the new characters and Baton Pass being an instant thing rather than a level 2 unlock makes battles run so much smoother than before.
If anybody is on the fence, I'd say it's well worth the $60.
@@Menchi42 Yes! You get it! It's why I say it's the Definitive version of the game! There's no way anyone would go back to the previous game with all these changes - and that's not hyperbole either! I'm curious what you'll think about the third semester :D I gotta figure out a good way for all of us to talk about it safely though so others won't be spoiled...

Great review Alex! I spent 180hrs playing through Persona 5 without any guides and currently on my second play through for a platinum. Sadly I have to wait a bit longer for my Phantom Thieves edition pre order since all EB Games stores in Canada are temporarily closed. But the wait will only make the game more sweeter. I remember beating Persona 5 for the first time in 2018, and immediately starting a New Game + run because of the things I missed. Now that it has been two years since I’ve played Persona 5, I’m super hyped to see all of the new additions and quality of life enhancements!
Once you play the game, you'll just start noticing one feature after another modified and altered in surprising ways. It's quite freeing, which is why I went with the sort of narrative in my review! I hope that came across!

@@BacklogBattle im tempted, i put in over 200 hours into p5, kind of wish i could just start a NG+ with the new game lol FF7 remake comes out next week, so im a bit tempted to cop that instead.
That's a very difficult choice! I'm tempted to pick up FF7R myself! Personally though, and this is independent of the fact that I reviewed P5R, between the two I'd pick P5R. The reason for this is that I feel that both games are trying to achieve something similar, which is to try and make combat exciting and friendly to a wider set of fans. Square Enix has tried to do this by leaning more towards a real-time action style method. We've seen this in FFXV (even further back, if you look at Tabata's work) and, of course, in FF7R as demonstrated in the recently released demo. That said, there's a portion of players who feel that the change to real time adds a more "rushed" methodology in making a strategy, while turn based games allow for more time. On the other hand, P5R, as mentioned in the review, feels *like* an action game due to its speed and responsiveness, but still retains that turn based feel, allowing people to take their time with their strategy and choices.
All told, that's just one factor to consider in a variety of different considerations of course! Personally, I love turn based games. Some will say it's antiquated, but there's plenty of ways to make it exciting as P5/P5R has demonstrated! I've spoken to many people who were on the fence who did pick up P5R and they've all told me that they've literally "forgotten how much they loved the game!" and that they're loving P5R! It's why I made my review the way it is - to remind people of why P5 was great, and why P5R is even better, which is being echoed by the fans who're currently playing it!
Anyways, sorry for the long comment! I hope that whatever you choose, that you'll enjoy your experience! Would love to know what you think of FF7R too, if you do pick that one up!

Your analysis of how the battle system feels like an action game without it actually being so was great! And so true because I’ve never been a huge fan of turn based RPGs because i hate going through menus, but P5 doesn’t feel that way at all!
Thank you! I spent a lot of time thinking why the battle system felt so great the way it is, until it hit me one day while playing. Just being able to "feel" where the different commands are thanks to what button they mapped felt so natural in a way, and so I started breaking down why that was. My goal was to remind Persona 5 fans why they loved the original game to begin with, so that when I did talk about Persona 5 Royal, it's an even bigger deal! I'm glad you grasped that from the review!

This really is the best Persona title so far. I really hope Persona 3 gets the very definitive version it deserves, combining both great stuffs in the FES and portable version, with modern visuals like Persona 5. Man, how I wish
I would absolutely love it if the older games were remade in Persona 5's visuals! I imagine that the "B" team that makes the enhanced rereleases are going to be the heads of the Persona team moving forward. I'm really curious how they're going to push the series into the future, given how great they are at knowing what needs to be altered and made!

The localization is better! The original game had two lines of text for localization, but for Royal, they added an additional line for it. Many lines are closer to the original source material!

Okay I take back everything bad I ever said about the melodrama in Persona 5. I picked it up for my steam deck (works flawlessly without any tinkering necessary) and my wife and I are absolutely loving it. She wanted me to mention that she can really relate to all of the Phantom Thieves and how they each have been "robbed of a place to belong." I'd already played about 60 hours of the og version on PS3, but that was years before we met and she'd not had any experience with the game until recently. We do that couple thing where we turn off the voice acting and come up with voices and read through the dialog with each other. It's odd, we almost exclusively play single player games with each other, whether it be passing the controller back and forth or just putting our heads together to figure out the tactics in a turn based game. You'd think we'd wanna play couch coop games but apparently she just really liked the idea of becoming "Blank" like in No Game No Life xD. She calls what we do "zeroing" though, or "perfect synchro".

I would stop and play Royal! The quality of life in Royal is worth starting over - plus the new stories and refinements to boot!

Thanks to my seller overestimating delivery delays I've gotten the chance to play the game since Friday and I can verify that this is the best version of the press-turn fighting system. I can't wait to play more even when this is already my sixth play through of Persona 5.
Question: how is the difficulty for the new semester?
Personally I thought it was quite easy. The whole game has been tuned in a way where some oft used mechanics like technicals are more useful in certain situations. I can’t really elaborate as my strategy for defeating enemies can count as spoilers, but I think it’ll be an overall pleasant experience! Im glad you’re enjoying the game so far!

It does not. However, you get bonuses if Royal detects the P5 save!

It’s an enhanced rerelease, which means it contains Persona 5’s story, but with a ton more things added, modified, enhanced, rebalanced that it might as well be a new game! P5 Part 2 is basically the upcoming Persona 5 Scramble! Think of this as P5 Extended and Enhanced!

I hear a lot about combat mechanics that were buffed or new one that were added, but did they actually rebalance the game or did they just throw them in haphazardly? Because none of it sounds _too_ gamebreaking but Persona 5 was already a fairly easy game with tenuous balance.
There is ONE fight that people will have problems with in the game imo, and for fear of spoilers, I won't specify what or where that is located. Otherwise, the game's rebalanced to be easier and that design choice is confirmed with interviews with the devs. I've been recommending that people select Hard if they want a challenging experience, and going in with this difficulty will mean that you'll have to utilize all existing Persona press-turn mechanics, *including* Technicals and Baton Passes more as an added strategic piece - which is actually really, really fun!
Can't pick up my pre order since my GameStop is closed. Won't get it digital because my cousin broke my PS 4 Pro. This sucks. Hopefully everyone enjoys this game though. Definitely a must buy.

finally beat the game and i must say its definitely the way to play persona 5 now especially the guns have finally gotten usefull and those showtime attacks are also really cool to see. in addition those will seeds really let you pay attention to your surroundings more to spot in those palaces.
the new mementos stuff is also a nice addition. i also liked the new content 10-20 hours new content with some some nice scenes before that with some great new music tracks (loved the one in the dungeon just before fighting the new final boss).
what also was an amaizing adition was the gallery mode especially the awards really shows you whats left to do in the game. as a fun bonus psn even send a code to your mail for free avatars and themes after you beat certain palaces
as for disapoinments in this game there are a few you haven't mentioned:
trophies are way to easy you almost get everything just by playing normally wel atleast we have the awards
no new confidant items for new game plus (just strange that they aren't there)
finally and this is more of a annoyance almost all kasumi costumes are paid (you can get the gym uniform for free) you dont have a lot of time with her but you have to pay for all those outfits atleast make here normal clothes and uniforms free.
but yeah your review is correct really for new players or people who want to play it again loved it though dont regret my purchase at all.

This is stunning. Once more Atlus one ups themselves. This why persona is one of my favorite game series next to the likes of dragon quest.

Persona5 looks like a bunch of fun, but it just seems to me that the demon collecting gameplay that's mostly shared with SMT works better thematically in the SMT universe. It feels thematically jarring to switch from a narrative that revolves around inner conflict to gameplay that involves collecting demons to battle on your behalf.
The only thing that truly matters in Royal
is 👏 the 👏 hook 👏 shot 👏
There’s so many good things in the game! I tried my best to not spoil a lot of the cool new things in the game so people can still be surprised! But yes, that hook shot is amazing!

@@BacklogBattle mainly the one where 5 was gonna take place around the world, not just Japan (they changed it to focus on Japan after a earthquake in 2011 I think it was)
The Jon Brown Show It’s not the same but I actually think parts of it might be implemented in Persona 5 Scramble, though that’s a trip throughout Japan!
@@BacklogBattle That's not the only thing they implemented in Persona 5 Scramble. Atlus intially wanted Persona 5 to be an action game. So they put both those ideas into scramble.
My only problem with Persona 5 Royal is that it's still Persona 5, lol. As someone who actually didn't have a problem with the Morgana limitations, I just hated a lot of what Persona 5 did. I found the battles cool, but cumbersome for someone like me who tries to mitigate MP usage to get through full dungeons in a single run, I hate when game have MC knockouts be team wipes diminishing the use of a dedicated healer (found that out at a really inconvenient time), and enemy ambushes after I struggled to take out one powerful group of enemies and them all getting a turn before I could do anything single handedly made me give up on bothering to try in the game, cause I knew a single enemy ambush could be an instant game over for me and undo hours of progress.
That said, the story fixes a lot of my issues with the original story because I absolutely hated that the Phantom Thieves were basically seen as absolute goods in the world. They also didn't ever have a negative consequence for stealing hearts except for the one time where it was clearly not their fault. Having characters that question the motives and actions of the Phantom Thieves more regularly is a great addition. Though, I haven't played through it and must ask, are the Phantom Thieves still stealing everyone else's...I'm forgetting the word, but effective self-action? Cause every time I had a major confidant breakthrough in the original, someone unabashedly evil would come and ruin the confidant's character growth and then, rather than letting them stand up for themselves or take action to fix things, the Thieves would just go and steal the hearts of the "evil" adult. It's ridiculous. And if they're so evil, why are they only in mementos and not having full palaces like the one PT's dad? He didn't seem all too evil, from my memory, and some of these confidant people were gangsters, twisted, and willing to kill and ruin people's lives. Just felt like the story only gave palaces to people who needed to have palaces, and like they worked in Mementos gameplay because they had to do it, rather than it being for actual growth. It was "You have a problem" "You work hard to fix problem" "You get threatened" "I fix everything for you" "You're happy". At least that's what the confidants originally felt like to me. They do look better this time around, so hopefully they don't have the same problem
Out of curiosity, did you play Persona 4 before Persona 4 Golden? The reason why I ask is because this is a thing that Atlus has been doing since Persona 3, with FES and Portable after it, and there's a good number of people (not saying you're one of them) who were caught by surprise with this enhanced re-release.
@@BacklogBattle Oh, no, I know about it and have no problem with it. I actually like how these types of releases give us the opportunity to experience the same type of idea/gameplay in multiple different forms. I just wanted to check if the confidants are still having the PTs basically walk all over the growth of the confidants. What's the word I'm looking for. There's a word for characters being self-driven and achieving their own growth that's been on the tip of my tongue for the past 2 days that I just can't quite remember.
I think a good comparison to this would be the way Tokyo Mirage Sessions handled character growth. Whenever characters had big needs for growth, finding motivation, or overcoming a challenge, they would recruit you into helping them go into the metaverse to accomplish what they needed. Compare that to P5 where Joker just happened to be there when certain events would happen and would then go fix the problems on his own without the confidants taking any active role in the metaverse mission.
If you have 4 hours to listen to a really good critique of the game, I highly recommend the video analysis done by Civit. He played the game multiple times through, despite hating it, and he had almost all the same issues as I did (though he was a lot more picky about some gameplay elements, like the cover mechanic, whereas I get more upset about Joker getting KOed being a team wipe, making any other character as the designated healer kinda pointless, since they could only res 1/3 of your team)
