Here, I chased a Boeing 717 to Dulles instead of an A320 into DCA (flight 737), because who knows how much longer these will be flying; the 717 is the last of the DC-9 family still in mainline passenger service in the United States. The opportunity presented itself, so I took it, and never before have I sat by the engines on a rear-mounted aircraft. Maybe because I'm a true avgeek, but the noise didn't bother me.
The 717 itself is an interesting beast, as it was acquired by Boeing from the McDonnell Douglas merger (then named the MD-95). 717-100 and -300 variants were considered, but never came to fruition. In total, 156 of these aircraft were made, with this being the 137th. Its first flight was November 5, 2004.
Special thanks to our flight attendant Michael, and the entire flight crew.
