The Weight of Stigma: Heavier Patients Confront the Burden of Bias

  • Melissa Krechmer, a social worker in Philadelphia, grew tired of hearing the same refrain from each of her doctors. “I’d go to my allergist, and they would [say], ‘You need to take your Zyrtec, but you also need to lose weight,’” Krechmer says. “It’d be every time, no matter what type of visit.” This went on for years, even as her repeated attempts to lose weight only led her to disordered eating. It made Krechmer stop seeking care altogether.
Krechmer’s story is not uncommon. Here's why.

How many of the "medical consequences" are because fat people don't get decent medical care? In societies where fat people are appreciated, they actually live LONGER than thin people.

The thin people I know don't exercise and live on pasta and pizza..

@@Mckeycee You are not a biologist and don't know the intricacies of the subject. I am just telling you that obesity is not as simple as eating too much and not exercising no matter how much you think that it is. You, along with most doctors still think of obesity in the scientific views of the 1950's. There is new scientific research that proves all that shit wrong. There is no scientific research that proves your ridiculously simplistic view right.

I was morebidly obese for years. But then I made some serious steps last year and now I shrunk down past obesity. And if I keep it up, within a few months I won't even be overweight either. I'll hit ideal body weight. It just takes physical effort and a willingness to do the homework and research how to achieve this.

I have an undiagnosed fatal condition... I am not a hypochondriac... Nor am I a Google "Doctor"... I have a background in biochemistry and statistics... And I also set up the scenario of not telling any of my friends what the condition was nor any of the symptoms... To combat my own conformation bias... And several have on their own pointed out concern about symptoms they've seen... Each person has brought up a different issue as my condition continues to deteriorate... Without any mention from me... Except them watching me continue to get worse and suffer and struggle more as time goes on... The condition can be fatal within less than year if not caught and treated rather early on... it typically has a life expectancy of around 7 years and my first symptoms started really started affecting my day to day about 6 years ago... So I'm not very happy about the circumstances but I'm dealing with it the best I can... So yes my weight will cost me my life... But not because of the extra weight... But the indifference of society and the bias that runs rampant within the medical community that couldn’t see past my Size and see me the same as any other patient as someone afraid and suffering and seeking not only relief... But at least maybe an answer or a cause... O and btw the conditions are completely unrelated to my weight...

@3:20 If I was a doctor and a person came into my office a 300 pounds, of course I would say he needs to lose weight because he clearly got to that state by not being healthy. Being "active" or exercising will not reduce your weight if you're eating a surplus amount of calories every day. It doesn't matter if you eat a salad every once in a while, if you're going over the daily recommended calories you will gain weight. The "obesity specialist" is being intentionally deceptive and dishonest about plain truths

You need to find out more a ut this subject before passing judgement. I wasn’t overweight in my life- weighed just over 100 lbs but always watched every single calorie that went in my mouth. I was a size 8. I played racquetball & walked 2 miles every day, went to aerobics 2x a week.
I had bought new clothes for a new job. 3 weeks later I could button the skirt! I had gained 15 lbs in 3 weeks despite not changing my eating or exercise habits. I tried so hard to lose it.
This went on for 10 years until I weighted 196. Finally I saw an endocrinologist who discovered I had low thyroid levels and he dx’d me w/severe metabolic disorder, he said it was rare, but IDK. When I began taking that med weight fell off like magic! I was too my goal weight within a year or less.
