- First job of 2018, we take time to share a detailed demonstration of some heat straightening techniques we favor, performing on lead screws, like the example in the video and other stepped or threaded shafting. ;{)-------
I never fail to be amazed by the work that gets done on this channel!!
I love watching people make stuff but there is nothing better then watching a guy FIX stuff. That is talent! I hope you got paid well Keith. You just saved somebody a bunch of money.
I agree with you totally. My Father bought a milling machine made in 1939 in Germany, Fritz Werner. Has a NT40 taper spindle (Vertical with Quill feed, manual) Dad paid $1700 Au for it with a broken X axis lead/feed screw. His Lathe and mine were not long enough to cut the double start thread to make a new one.
$1000.00 later he has a VERY good machine, Dad has passed now and I have same. My point is I learned from this excellent video of Keith's and is tons cheaper than making a new one! Shame that both had to be worked on because of a mistake. Cheers from John, Australia.
Bravo sir, Bravo. I've watched you straighten shafts over the years and never tire seeing you in action. You surely know your metallurgy.
It certainly gave me a strait shaft while watching it.
Never been unimpressed by any of your videos, but holy hell I was just in awe during this one. They say a true master makes his job look simple, and those words couldn’t be more true here.
NEAT trick hot straightening a spinning shaft. I thought I knew most of what there is to know about fixing bent stuff - map the kinks, work them out one at a time, go back and refine if necessary, bring in the over-all error, etc but there's always something new like this localized hot spin technique. Now that I see it, the method is an obvious extension of common straightening technique suited for heat-tolerant materials.
Thanks for the well-presented lesson. I'll spread it among my proteges.
Very cool Keith.... I learn a LOT of interesting techniques from you videos. Thanks...!
Thank you Keith. I consider myself privileged to have seen you do that. May 2018 bring happiness and prosperity to you.
Seeing damage of that extent all but undone is mesmerizing.
awesome job and I enjoy the fact that you caught yourself rambling and stopped it. That makes your channel much more enjoyable to watch and follow, thanks. I learned a lot from your channel and look forward to watch you more.
It's fantastic to see a repair like this. A lesser experienced person might have given up on an old lathe and sent it for scrap.
Always fun to watch you straighten something up, I never get tired of it.
So impressive to watch a man at work, clearly a master of your craft!
what a slick way to straighten a bent shaft no press just steady rest applying force and heat. stress relived I think Keith said.
That was truly amazing. If I hadn’t t seen it, I would not have thought it possible.
another great straightening job by Keith! You brought it back to life right before our eyes!
Another flawless fantastic video.
I hope to remember one day to learn half of what you forgot I'm the first hour of on the job training. You are a true craftsman, and it's a honor to watch you work
You rock!! I really enjoy your videos. Straight to the point. I learn every time I watch. Please keep out the GREAT work. Thanks
I am always amazed at watching you do these straightening videos it`s like watching a magic act
Ok you just answered my question, I had not watched quite far enough. You are the Guru of fabrication.
great fix, thanks for all the tips you pass along.
You are truly a magician my friend. Thanks for another great video!
Learning something new, every time I see You in action. Thanks for sharing, Keith - I wish You have a very happy new year!
Happy New Year! What a great way to start out the new year with a Keith Fenner video. I'm still watching faithfully although I do not comment much. I'm still machining in big part because of you, sir. Thank you! The Greenland connection.
Before and after shots look like magic , amazing what a little polish does to the burnt finish, nice job again1
Thanks for all your work last year and best wishes for the New Year...
Keith Fenner, The Shaft Master. I'm impressed!
Way more heat than I expected, but in hindsight it makes sense. Learned a lot (again) thanks!
"Keithweazle" the wizard of Cod makes the shaft run true with some fancy fire magic. Impressive!!!
Hello, mister. 1 Your torch may blow up. Repair it. 2. When shaft in lathe and you heat it by torch and you already bend it and hold it by back center of lathe (I don't know a right name of it, sorry, english is not my native language) so now hammer it by light hammer to remove internal tensions of metal. 3. Cloth on your lathe may be hooked by spindle of lathe. Use a sheet of soft metal or plywood instead or above the cloth. 4. Best wishes from Russia. Happy new year ☺
Keith, I've watched you straighten many shafts and explain the process. But, I don't believe it: I think it's magic.
Happy New Year!
Thank you for sharing another way to straighten a shaft. Happy New Year . Keep warm in this Arctic blast & snow storm coming
You are the master at that...enough said..
Hello Keith
Amazing how things can be fixed and rectified, if not refurbished for re-use. Awesome piece of work
Keep 'em rolling

Very good job Keith. I enjoyed watching you use your magic on the part.
An old school machinist, love your work.
Another masterpiece, very clever thanks for the lesson professor.
The magic straightener.... Nice work Keith... saw you use techniques I do not recall seeing before.
It's amazing what a little heat in the right places will do for you, awesome as always Keith have a great and profitable new year
Very Interesting. Thanks Keith. Hope you and yours do well with the storm descending on you!

Masterful work, Mr. Fenner.
Happy New Year! Thanks for another great video! Always interesting to see all the creative ways you get ‘er done!
Well if it had been me I would have done it differently (and wrongly), and would probably still be trying to straighten that sucker now. lol. Awesome job as always Keith. Best wishes, Mal.
A master class in less than 30 minutes..... AWESOME SAUCE
Happy New Year to the Fenner clan.
You’re good.. Thanks for sharing your skills and knowledge. From the show me state, Missouri

Know why I subscribed and have notifications - just viewed main reason right here. Great job on straightening that shaft.
Damn, another awesome job again, Keith has multiple tricks up his sleeve on how to skin rabbits.
Great technique fella. This is one I will most likely be doing. Perfect job my friend !
Amazing. It's truly art watching you work. Happy New Year.
Nicely done - Happy new year.
Nice job, methodical and patient, I leaned some stuff.
Pretty cool sums it up, that turned out slicker than owl poop.
Happy NewYear from one of your loyal Danish subscribers :-) - a fan from the other end of the world
that was absolutely amazing to watch, thank you Keith, and Happy New Year.
Damm but you are good at that. You have a full tool box of tricks.
Simply amazing in how you did that.
As always! Awesome!
And I thought I was good at shaft straightening, F%&k - you're good, Keith. I really enjoy these videos and am forever grateful.
,man i wonder how many guys could give it one good tap with a mallet and get it that close. Happy New Years!! Stay warm. That blizzard is hammering the cape right about now I bet. Cheers Keith
Happy New Year Keith, always give us good moments, thank you.
Very interesting process to watch. Happy New Year!
Very talented man you are Keith, you make it look way too easy.
That was "crooked as a dog's hind leg," as one old-timer I knew would put it. "And that dog had rickets as well."
I like the way he gets the lead screw into the center rest with 1 hit of the hammer!!
Great work Keith.
Hi Keith, Happy New Year, nice job, a good old handmade thumbs up to you, All the best for 2018.
Enjoyed Keith....awesome discussion/demostration....HNY
Its defiantly easier with a steady rest, and you make it look easy.
Thanks for your trouble of posting, I got a few good pointers in there...
My $40 each cam rollers aren't expendable items over here, the $6 ones are... lol
Didn't forget about what I promised you, been awfully buzy, plus, Danielle and I are trying to survive a nasty flu...
Take good care and Best Wishes to you and Vanessa, Pierre
Great work Keith
Brilliant video Keith!
Nice one. Stay safe boss. That storm surge looks nasty.
Bravo, vous êtes le meilleur ;-)
BRILLIANT!
Starting the new year off right I see with a video..
Amazing work and great video! Run-out now is probably less than it was originally.
Pure genius Keith
Bravo très bon travail .
you got it sir! thank you for showing us this
Well done!
perfect job Keith !
Happy New Year sir... hope its a great one for you and your family. Thanks for a superb 2017.
Wow, amazing job!
thanks for putting this video out,
I don't know why but I felt sorry for the indicator
Happy New Year Keith nice job and I really can't understand why anyone should go thumbs down !!!
As usual a very well job done by you Sir….In the future if you are willing can you do a video for us how not to do a job…. It will be interesting to see from a well-seasoned veteran like you…
Nice work keith
Nice one keith. Impressive skill.
Hi Keith: As soon as I learn about the bomb hitting your area, I grew concerned about your shop, the Buffy Enclosure and your nice Porsche that I hope is above water.
Take care and let us know about the situation. Regards
You have gold hand tanks, lesson very good and capaciti👍
Beautiful job ! great work. Happy new year
Good stuff Kieth. Good to see some practical accuracy instead of the guys who go for the nth degree all the time. 5 thou over a shaft that long , its prob better than when it left the factory!
Thank you.
Another WOW job!
Beautiful job. Only thing that bothers me is it might be nice to see some sort of a containment loop on the loose end while heating it so hot. I'm sure if the rod dipped from the heat, things would go south in a fraction of a second.
Maybe not for someone as experienced as you, but for someone attempting this for the first time.
Love to see a side by side of before and after..... ...after was probably better than when new.
