    I was running this saw for about 2 hours at about a 30-50% duty cycle czcams.com/users/postUgkxfQm1wmg0ItKDLavxj1nXtQY9HP7EF504 and it did a great job. I used the lever for the built in sharpener to clear chip buildup out more than to actually sharpen the chain. It managed to cut some hardwood stumps much larger than it's size without bothering the neighbors with hours of 2 stroke noise.

    I have this saw and here is my take on it.
    If Im going through the trouble of climbing a large tree Im bringing my 201t or 550xp up the tree. However, if im pruning or using a ladder to cut down smaller trees that hang over a house I love this little guy, I got mine with a 10 inch because youre really not going to cut anything bigger than 9 inches unless youre cutting cookies with it. Worth every penny over the echo version 2511t because its a better built saw...the antivibe on my echo wont last as long I can tell after just 9 hours use on both saws. Plus the air filter isnt filthy after a couple refills like the echo. Overall great trimming small tree removal saw. But if you need one for all get a 201t or 550xp.
    My lineup
    150t 10” stihl,
    2511t 12” echo(backup),
    201t stihl 12”
    550xp 16” husky,
    cs500p 16” echo(backup),
    371xp 20” husky (favorite felling saw),
    661c stihl 25” (my large tree saw :) )
    Soon a 572xp or ms 462 will replace my tired 371xp...depends on which one is truly better. Love the MS 462 on paper 13.6 pounds :) but I feel the 572xp is going to be the refined better featured more durable choice but only time will tell

      Jeffrey Bridges hey dude you seem like you know what your talking about. I’m on the fence btw the ms150T and the 193T. I just used a MS271 with 20” bar to prune my tree. Well I can’t squeeze anything today due to my hands being shot. 🤦🏻‍♂️ I know I was stupid for climbing a tree with such big saw but that’s what I own. My question (finally) lol have you had any experience with the ms271? that thing seems underpowered for the size. I have adjusted carb, got better but still kinda wimpy and hard to start. Now the pull start got really hard and won’t start. Gonna take it apart today, but have you heard complaints from that machine. I dropped nice cash on my first STIHL now I’m thinking the brand is bunk. I had the Poland 18” and it ran for YEARS! I’m I wrong? Tks bro

    Thanks for posting such a great review video James, exactly what I was after! We have a Husky 236 at the moment and it's showing its age, so I'm looking for a smaller chainsaw for the majority of tasks, such as pruning and cutting the smaller firewood - leaving the Husky until we have thicker branches to go through. Perfect video to aid my decision making.

    As far as I know they stopped making the 10" 1/4 pitch 0.43" gauge bars but you may still find some around. They are still making the 12 and 14" bars though. I think you can also change this to a low profile 3/8ths sprocket which really opens up some possibilities for larger chains. You can also use the stock 1/4" pitch sprocket with 0.050" gauge 10" carving bar. You'll have to decide which bars and chains will best fit your jobs. If this was a primary saw for me I'd have to have the capability of using a carbide chain. I use a 10" 1/4 pitch 0.43" gauge chain on my pole saw for getting into overgrown hedges. That chain makes some smooth cuts.

  • @smorgy11
    @smorgy11 Před 6 lety +4

    I can hear the chain is to tight and restricts cutting. The chain stretches when new. Proper tension and it cuts great

  • @JamesTheForester
    @JamesTheForester  Před 10 lety +1

    I think I wanted something that I could use for light reductions and very accurate pruning, but which could be pressed into service on dismantles as well. I know it's a compromise, but it has to do a different job to a 3/8 size one. I have a 441 which covers me for the big stuff, it made sense to get something at the opposite end of the scale. I have a 231 which isn't much bigger than a husky 540 (which is a nice saw) and I use that up in the air for bigger stuff. We'll see how it pans out - esp how many times that tiny chain can be sharpened before it wears out!

    I could do with a little top handled chainsaw at the moment, I am trying to cut down a big conifer tree in my garden, been fun trying to learn how to climb a tree on a budget, I got stuck up there the first time lol, bit embarrassing, but I have been getting better and trimming it with a silky hand saw,

    I've three top handles, two of which are the most powerfull the echo cs 355 t and the sthil 200 t and my lightest is the cs 270 t with and 8 inch bar that I took off my echo power pruner. When you have to use one hand all day with cutting branches in every possible direction when pruning its a joy esp when it feels like you have hardly any weight attached to your climbing harness. The biggest thing is knowing how to keep the thing sharp and the rakers at the right level - a small saw will out cut a larger dull one. I want that saw too b.t.w!

    Currently running a 3/8 chain on my t540xp and she flies. Why did you go with the 150t out of interest? I think it's a great little saw but imo is only suited to specific tasks such as reductions etc rather than the broader range of arb work.

    How are the vibration levels? On the spec sheet they're 5/5 which is high. My 201 rear handle is 2.5/3 or something around that, very pleasant to use.

    Great wee saw, i really like it..! But my Stihl dealer, doesnt recommend it because the chain is SO fine, As you said its great if used within its limitations, how many sharpens do you get from one chain before replacing it..?? I couldnt imagine anymore then 3 or 4 at most. And chains are just as pricey as a 3/8 normal chain.
    You have this saw a little over two years now, whats your verdict on it now James..?

    Us Climbers generally prefer the as you call them Heavy top handles as they are full professional spec...ie better pistons and bottom ends and huge amounts of power compared to the little pruning saw you have...thatz why they cost twice as much...cos they can do twice as much work!!!!!!!!
    I do love that one though.
    Its my girlfreinds first climbing saw.

    Looks like a great little saw; much lighter than the 200t. I bought a little top handled Makita (Dolmar) for the same reason ie lightness, and it goes like a little champ for it's size.

    • @peterford9369
      @peterford9369 Před 7 lety

      JamesTheForester guessing they got the chain size from the pole pruners. Both of mine are 1/4 inch, and figuring they're made to prune primarily, therefore fine cuts. So, 24 ccs is plenty. Nice lightweight though. Nothing to hang,, like it ain't even there. Nice video.

      That saw is 499 and the Echo is 389. I own both. Echo has more power is slightly lighter but the antivibe is already wearing out and Ive cut maybe 20-25 hours with it. The air filter is dirty after two or three tanks. If you need a small saw doing a few trees of your own or for a friend get the echo...you going to do this on a regular basis better off with the stihl
