+Josiah Brondyke I think it wouldn't allow the full force to be transferred to the chin like in "real life" it would probably (due to the weight of just the torso and not a full human body) knock off the table in a disappointing way that didn't film well
+Josiah Brondyke well if you want to get technical he said the head would severe and fly 187 feet into the air....that wasn't 187 feet.
don't get me wrong it was super cool. and I enjoyed the video. I didn't mean to come across as overly critical. I was just hoping to understand the logic behind the decision to strap down the dummy. I think the commenter that mentioned that it may have been hard to make a machine hit it at the proper point, makes a valid one. it would have been a disappointing slow mo replay if it had missed or just fallen over. also i think the last comment I read was right that the 80 something height was claimed to be the height of the puncher if no impact was made.
I asked because I thought I could learn if there was some scientific reason for it beyond pragmatics, and it seems like teaching about the technical is kind of the point of these videos.

+KaiWolf18 yea that's because he only calculated the weight and size of a head flying in the air with a certain amount of Newton. Thus if the head was just a head it would fly that high, since heads are still commonly attached to necks it just severs.

187 feet is the simple rigid-body calculation of applying the force to a mass equivalent to an average head. Subtract the force required to actually separate the head from the body, then all the force dispersed by breaking bone and tearing flesh and the result is what you see in the video.
