Minecraft was the target for the first episode of my new series, the One Week Game Programming Challenge. The primary purpose for this series is to make myself look like a fool while engaging in the art of learning. I use Unity3D as the game engine and c# as the programming language.
Feel free to suggest games you'd like to see me program in a week.

This is really impressive (and makes the rip offs even less impressive since we now know you can do it in a week).
I would like to get into game dev, but definitely not today.
Well, there's a lot more that go into an actual game. What he did he's excellent and very well executed, but it is indeed not that hard to do. I did the same kind of game for a project for my bachelor's degree. But that's just a technical demo of a voxel world. Then you need a UI that works, AI for mobs, Animation for mobs and player (Sure it's often simple animation but even that is not that easy since you want it to match entity's behavior). In there you see that all the blocks are static and don't have any behavior, if you have liquid you'd want the liquid to actually move if you place is anywhere or when a block next to it is broken. This last one implies a whole new system that can quickly be explain by talking about ticks. So each ticks, blocks are updated. But not all blocks since this would make the game run very poorly with a low fps. So you need a system that makes sure to know when to update a block. this will be used then for all blocks that do things, like furnaces, liquids, redstone, piston etc. But those blocks have data. They can have inventory and a state. So you will need to encode this in the actual voxel value so it can be saved. You will need a system to ensure this metadata can be easily access by a programmer and not too hard to remember. Adding this metadata will give you the possibility to encode stuff like rotation, or I am the bottom of a door, I am the top of the door, etc. I could go on and on about all you need for a complete game like minecraft like dynamic lighting, particles systems, random weather system, entities spawning behavior, multi-world system and saving of it, data-driven loading of assets, etc. And all this needs to be code while thinking about the future, you want the code to be easily modifiable and easy to add stuff on it. This requires a lot of thinking. In a tech demo you don't really care about that since usually you don't want to continue working on the project in the future. You also need to keep into consideration that each feature you add to the code makes the code more complex, and each time you add a feature there's more chance it will break something else and the list of bugs will keep on growing. So you need to take a lot of your time to eliminate those bugs, each time you do eliminate one, there's a chance you created another one somewhere. So there's always bugs in a complex game, you need to check which ones are important, which ones are not a big deal, so you need to do A LOT of testing. So yeah, the actual games using this systems a a lot more complex and could not be done in a week like that :) But, anyway, I greatly encourage you to go into game development, I do that for a living and it's a lot of fun :) You should definitely look for nice tutorials about it, if you haven't yet. There's a lot of good ones. Unity is awesome, but for a beginner I suggest Game Maker. A lot more easy at first since you don't actually have to know a programming language to make something simple and there's a free version like Unity.
Yeah, minecraft is a very good base for game design.
The template is easy to create (hence all the clones) but you can build on top of it with importing skins, adding items, blocks, mobs with AI, block breaking speeds, ext.
Hell I'd like to see how someone would recreate the elytra flight in these.
i cant believe i wasted my life reading that ;×;

It's amazing to think that this was made in just 7 days, good job!
you obviously have never programmed in unity3d... i can download an asset on the asset store, and be 7 days ahead of you, in 1 minute.
*****
yes, but that is also an asset, he did this by hand...
***** You download an asset... Don't you think it's possible that you downloaded the same (or similar) work? You really think that assets are born.. just like that, in a second? Someone just wasted his time to make your life easier, that's all. But still, if you wanted something flexible and without features you just don't need and won't even use, you'd rather make your own scripts. This way you have more control over the game.
the crashes are mojang trying to stop you. they have agents everywhere
xD
I laughed way too hard at this
You did an amazing work! I wish that they will come soon with an upgrade that will bring this kind of graphics. Keep up this amazing work!
Just to address a couple things I see come up repeatedly:
Q: Will you be doing more one week challenges?
A: Yes, one is in progress right now (look at my channel art for a sneak peak), but I have difficulty finding time to do it.
Q: Download link (code/game)?
A: No, this is very little of the actual game--it has infinite terrain and you can dig holes, with a few ores spawning and a health/stamina system, plus support for item drops and equips, etc. That's less than the original indev version of Minecraft. Plus, the system is horribly inefficient compared to what it could be. The code is messy and entirely uncommented, though extensible. It would need to be made far more before I released the code. No confirmation or denial to that end yet.
Q: How did you do in a week what took Notch/Mojang years?
A: I didn't. What you see is very little of the actual game, see previous answer.
Q: Minecraft should have been made in Unity to begin with.
A: That's not a question. Also, if Minecraft was originally made in Unity, all of the awesome modpacks that add so much replay value to Minecraft would not have been possible. Additionally, though Java isn't very efficient, Minecraft is heavily optimized compared to my version.
Q: What are you doing with this now that it's done?
A: Some of the code I've reused in a separate project, but mostly I've taken what I learned form the project and what I've learned from reading and experimentation since then to create some other systems that if I get around to polishing I'll do more with. Just to give a teaser, think of an infinite sculptable smooth world in all three dimensions. Anything about this, though, will be after the next One Week Challenge.
Q: How bad is your computer?
A: It's got a decent processor, but the graphics card has about half the power of the Wii U's. At the time of recording this video, I also only had 4GB of RAM. Besides that, it only seems to have problems when I'm recording specifically for one-week challenges.
Q: Why don't you use Visual Studio?
A: I did prior to and after this video. I originally switched to Monodevelop because of how unstable VS 2010 was, but 2013 is great, save a few hilarious glitches that I managed to catch on tape. Look forward to it :)
I'll try to respond to any questions made directly to this comment, too.
If I said I'd be down to help you with in any way, whether it'd be moral support, ideas, changing things, etc, (Obviously to avoid a complete recreation, but keeping the Minecraft style) would you actually finish it? Because I'm currently making a game that is getting no where, literally restarted more than 15 times whether it'd be because I reinstall my computer or I'm not happy with the outcome. PM me if you're more comfortable than commenting how you feel about this. (If you still wouldn't want to I'd prefer a PM so I know you at least took the time to read my offer.)
***** If I'm understanding right and you're asking if I'll continue on with this Minecraft, it's a no for now. Once I've done more one-week challenges, I might do a revisit/overtime series where I'd go in and implement stuff I added support for but didn't have time to implement in a demonstrable fashion, like items, combat, and multiplayer. As for restarting a project 15 times, there's nothing wrong with that if it's on your own time. Each time you do it, it will be better than it was before. It's only wasted time if you don't learn anything. If you're asking if I'd like to join a project, unfortunately the answer is a no. I tend to be more of a solo guy.
Shane Beck Yeah, you answered all my questions. I guess it's getting better. I might actually learn to cope with a game design set-style though. I meant would you finish it, like... At all. Because honestly it looks better than anything I can dream of, I don't remember dreams often, but it's still better :3 Not really join a project, but I meant if you needed help with anything like coding, motivation, etc. Help, not a team. Thanks for a respond by the by, glad you didn't just blow me off and make me look stupid :)
I liked that Ben drowned reference at the end I'm a Zelda fan to you should do a challenge on making a zelda

They could, but there is one problem. Minecraft was made in Java, this was made in C#. Despite how C# was made to be similar in some ways to Java, there are still some big differences. In other words, he would have to know how to code in Java as much as he can in C# to work at Mojang on Minecraft.

Learning to code should be taught in more schools. My public school in Texas really only had one programming class and it was more about building websites. I would love to see a classes in high school to teach how to make games or program Phone apps. I think its a really valuable skill!
I would look into Hour of Code. It's what it says up front, which is basically an hour or simple tutorials teaching programming basics.
GoodFriendsForever My school has Computer Science and we use and write programs using Eclipse. Pretty cool class, it's just a bit hard for me to understand. My teacher uses Unity too and even created some games himself.
GoodFriendsForever Being taught to make a website can be used as a good base to start from. It gives you an understanding of using scripting languages, which are pretty much like very limited programming languages, some more limited than others. But what you would be achieving is a basic understanding of coding languages in general, and an understanding of the different styles.
For example, PHP is a scripting language, but will teach you about procedural programming and some basic understanding of Object-Oriented Programming. It will also teach your mind to think a certain way, to problem solve with logic, and forces you to think outside of the box, to achieve your goals.
I learned PHP as my first language and now I can learn any programming language easily and quickly, because of it. All scripting languages are based off of the same or similar programming languages, they all share similar syntax and follow similar programming rules and concepts. Thus, making it easy to transition from one language to another.
Once you understand one language, you pretty much understand them all or at least most. These days, building a modern website, isn't that much different to making some software with a GUI.
GoodFriendsForever If everyone learned to code, then the internet would be very dangerous. It's like giving a gun to everyone after they graduate..
enurtia1 Maybe I just dont know much about code but wouldnt more people who know code would also work on ways to defend against the others
lol these are like those rip offs you can get on your phone. And u did it in a week. They probably spent months!!! Impressive!!!!!!!!!!!! It makes them look extremely bad....
he made it with unity... notch coded the bare bones (including the renderer) in 12 hours
Oh yeah yeah yeah but notch wanted to use a custom engine written in java. And at the time to my knowledge we didn’t have great free engines + he was doing it to make money. If you make your own engine you don’t have to worry about licensing fees.
wow you put an insane amount of effort into that!!!!
You should seriously consider putting an epilepsy warning at the start of this...
There are two, both at the start of the video and in the description.
+Shane Beck oh, ok. I was watching this on my phone, so I guess I couldn't see them...
+Shane Beck good job on it, though!

You did this all by yourself?!?! Wtf! You're a genius
Really really a great result for 1 week
LegendOfLinq: Can I make minecraft?
MonoDevelop: no
Totally worth watching just to see someone's Unity3d workflow
I agree.
Workflow is very important, they will teach you how to program in C#, they will teach you how to use API, how to import assets, but they never show you the workflow, But it's essential
sapher974 A good coder is who have a good workflow, not who know all the commands!
Samuele Lorefice Jon Carmack apparently had extremely easy to read, followable code. Not some genius writing magic using shortcuts that are in binary, but simply someone who can organize his thoughts and write clear ideas. I forgot whose blog I read, the guy who ported quake to the mac, W something... anywho, just thought that was inspiring, +1 for readable structures
Watching this video has taught me quite a bit. Though I've watched it quite a few times already, I just want to say thanks for doing this challenge and uploading the progress. ^ ^
Ik this is five years old but I'd love to see a remake of this with a more in depth approach on how its made. This is my second time rewatching this video and I'm still freaking blown away 😮😮❤
Glad you enjoyed it enough to come back! tbh if I revisited it, I'd change the way it was structured entirely. When I made this, I had no idea what a voxel was (the typical approach to something like this) Instead I just had large arrays of block objects that inheritted from different things.
This video its just amazing
Wow! Just wow! Can't say nothing more.

You sir, are amazing. Microsoft should hire you to port Minecraft to C++ with the better shaders and all.
He works with unity wich supports c#
+Phenix Patton And the best thing is, ALONE, not in team like Mojang lolololol.
Kenny Do all those facts stop Mojang from finally getting rid of Java and getting minecraft into C++ already?
Lord Sacha
Watch the video maybe? One guy made it in a week, well basic stuff...
A team of guys would do that in a month? What they are paid for?
+Error 404 account not found You keep saying that because someone can make it in Unity with C# with a lot of help (from the editor), then a team of people can do all the stuff manually, without any help, in C++, an already hard language, and then port it to every platform they support already which takes another month or so to do in C++. A little bit easier to stick to Java and at least they only have to do half of the hard work, and still double the work what the uploader had to do.
Wow, it took Notch years to make Minecraft- out of a previously-existing Infiniminer- while you just simulated a nice little Classic in a week. In a month, there'll be TNT, mobs, real clouds, different biomes, items, and such... wow.
I guess so... but still...
Yes very good point PokeSpriterAce.
PokeSpriterAce If you knew the difference between building your own game engine and compiling everything INCLUDING multiplayer features for your game using Java (not JAVA) versus using pre-fab game engines like Unity whilst compiling C# on .NET framework, you would not be of that opinion. "Notch" didn't make minecraft out of infiniminer, he made a game similar to infiniminer after the developers stopped developing it. Just like FortressCraft isn't minecraft or infiniminer, it's similar.
K White I agree, but still. And also, back when Minecraft was just being made, when it was called Cave Game, it was an Infiniminer clone. Linky: Nizzotch

well game maker is a giant pile of shit anyways, you basically drag and drop everything to make a game

Game Maker's a great learning tool, but it doesn't make good quality professional level games.
I just love the graphics
It took you a week to make and its already way better than every minecraft clone on the app store
Dude this video is awesome, not just anyone can just recode one of the most selling games on earth! and make it look better! :) you have some amazing talent dude.
well he didn't write a new engine so... yeah.. still impressive that he did it in a week.. i want to get my hands on the code, try to get it up_to_date feature wise.. probably would take a few months. but I got time to kill
***** u expect one person to write new engine in 1 week ? Wow! Correct me if I am wrong, as my knowledge about game engines is limited; isn't the game engine have ALL the data required to create game atmosphere? i mean atleast generic data (like texture, models, and whatnot!) And the events generally occur while game is running? And also Doesn't it have all physics, lighting, locals? And also dont it have the SDK and tutorials about the engine etc?
correct me if i am wrong... Doesn't it is to be tested several months just to get it right for all kind of gaming actions and bug finding?
creating this thing in one week ... that will be achievement man! and i am really looking forward to anyone who can create it !
*****
well MatadorStudios said " not just anyone can just recode one of the most selling games on earth" i was just stating that he didn't rewrite the engine therefore hie didn't re-code the game (considering the original had an engine that was made from scratch), doing that in a weak would be some god tier (literal) make the world in seven days shit.
***** hmm i thought you were doing "pff , so what!" expression at first, now you make sense. Right, he didnt recode the thing just made playable minecraft out of already established game engine. whilst the original game devs made it out of basic languages (i dunno which, pry tell if you know).
***** I have basic coding knowledge (Python), but would happily spend my time learning how to work with unity3D if it means a slightly better version of Minecraft.
Looks like pretty much every Minecraft ripoff on AppStore/Google Play, now we know how much effort they put into their games
No, they do a shit ton less.
***** Well, it's pretty wrong to put everyone under the same line.
Because some do actually copy scripts, or at least parts and only make their own little touch to them, and then of course, there are the ones who actually just re-create an already existing product, but from scratch.
It is wrong to say "No, they do a shit ton less." Since i'm making a huge generalization. But the same way goes for the opposite side, saying it's the complete opposite.
What i meant was somewhat a joke, but of course with a bit of intent.
Hope you get what i mean though.
All love!
wrong, the ripoffs are easy asf to make
Raxs Slayer Coming up with ideas isn't hard indeed, but coming up with GOOD ideas kinda is.
Anyways, coding is the longest part :p
just because he did it in a week doesn't mean everyone can. it just means he did an impressive job.
As a new comer to unity this is just madness how you make this work within a week
Amazing work :o
I wish I had your programming ability, your skills are amazing.

+Diego Miranda this is a 1 week game, minecraft beta was also a 1 week game but with more than 7 people
Ice storm i know, is very hard to make a game, Minecraft looks simple but really it isn't
2 years later:
Minecraft unity edition
This is eerie
You are a super genius. You singlehandedly did what it took almost a year for an entire team to do, in a week. You are a role model to me. I strive to be as good as you one day.
Minecraft was made by one man originally, the comparison in work is nothing compared to what he did on his own. And he coded from scratch in Java, you used Unity...
Joel Mclean He code with java language mann.. Just with unity easier create models and more..
URE SO FCKING BOSS!! :DDD Best work i ever seen, good work man! :-)

Lesson of the story?
Backup your files every hour on the hour!
Or don't use Monodevelop... I prefer Sublime Text 3
Yes, I know. It sucks though.
AwesomeFaceHD I've honestly never had a problem with MonoDevelop. I haven't used the new version much yet, though.
Jared Cerbin I just think it's too slow. I love Sublime Text 3 though.
AwesomeFaceHD Backup your files every hours? I think devs should always have their finger on ctrl (cmd) + s when they code.
