    Minecraft was the target for the first episode of my new series, the One Week Game Programming Challenge. The primary purpose for this series is to make myself look like a fool while engaging in the art of learning. I use Unity3D as the game engine and c# as the programming language.
    Feel free to suggest games you'd like to see me program in a week.
    Music courtesy of Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) "The Complex", "Decisions", "Plain Loafer", and "Arcane"
    Also a huuuuge thanks to Notch for programming Minecraft, arguably one of the most enjoyable games in the world.

    • @mooviies
      @mooviies Před 7 lety +61

      Well, there's a lot more that go into an actual game. What he did he's excellent and very well executed, but it is indeed not that hard to do. I did the same kind of game for a project for my bachelor's degree. But that's just a technical demo of a voxel world. Then you need a UI that works, AI for mobs, Animation for mobs and player (Sure it's often simple animation but even that is not that easy since you want it to match entity's behavior). In there you see that all the blocks are static and don't have any behavior, if you have liquid you'd want the liquid to actually move if you place is anywhere or when a block next to it is broken. This last one implies a whole new system that can quickly be explain by talking about ticks. So each ticks, blocks are updated. But not all blocks since this would make the game run very poorly with a low fps. So you need a system that makes sure to know when to update a block. this will be used then for all blocks that do things, like furnaces, liquids, redstone, piston etc. But those blocks have data. They can have inventory and a state. So you will need to encode this in the actual voxel value so it can be saved. You will need a system to ensure this metadata can be easily access by a programmer and not too hard to remember. Adding this metadata will give you the possibility to encode stuff like rotation, or I am the bottom of a door, I am the top of the door, etc. I could go on and on about all you need for a complete game like minecraft like dynamic lighting, particles systems, random weather system, entities spawning behavior, multi-world system and saving of it, data-driven loading of assets, etc. And all this needs to be code while thinking about the future, you want the code to be easily modifiable and easy to add stuff on it. This requires a lot of thinking. In a tech demo you don't really care about that since usually you don't want to continue working on the project in the future. You also need to keep into consideration that each feature you add to the code makes the code more complex, and each time you add a feature there's more chance it will break something else and the list of bugs will keep on growing. So you need to take a lot of your time to eliminate those bugs, each time you do eliminate one, there's a chance you created another one somewhere. So there's always bugs in a complex game, you need to check which ones are important, which ones are not a big deal, so you need to do A LOT of testing. So yeah, the actual games using this systems a a lot more complex and could not be done in a week like that :) But, anyway, I greatly encourage you to go into game development, I do that for a living and it's a lot of fun :) You should definitely look for nice tutorials about it, if you haven't yet. There's a lot of good ones. Unity is awesome, but for a beginner I suggest Game Maker. A lot more easy at first since you don't actually have to know a programming language to make something simple and there's a free version like Unity.

    • @sonicmeerkat
      @sonicmeerkat Před 7 lety

      Yeah, minecraft is a very good base for game design.
      The template is easy to create (hence all the clones) but you can build on top of it with importing skins, adding items, blocks, mobs with AI, block breaking speeds, ext.
      Hell I'd like to see how someone would recreate the elytra flight in these.

Someone just wasted his time to make your life easier, that's all. Just to address a couple things I see come up repeatedly:
    Q: Will you be doing more one week challenges?
    A: Yes, one is in progress right now (look at my channel art for a sneak peak), but I have difficulty finding time to do it.
    Q: Download link (code/game)?
    A: No, this is very little of the actual game--it has infinite terrain and you can dig holes, with a few ores spawning and a health/stamina system, plus support for item drops and equips, etc. That's less than the original indev version of Minecraft. Plus, the system is horribly inefficient compared to what it could be. The code is messy and entirely uncommented, though extensible. It would need to be made far more before I released the code. No confirmation or denial to that end yet.
    Q: How did you do in a week what took Notch/Mojang years?
    A: I didn't. What you see is very little of the actual game, see previous answer.
    Q: Minecraft should have been made in Unity to begin with.
    A: That's not a question. Also, if Minecraft was originally made in Unity, all of the awesome modpacks that add so much replay value to Minecraft would not have been possible. Additionally, though Java isn't very efficient, Minecraft is heavily optimized compared to my version.
    Q: What are you doing with this now that it's done?
    A: Some of the code I've reused in a separate project, but mostly I've taken what I learned form the project and what I've learned from reading and experimentation since then to create some other systems that if I get around to polishing I'll do more with. Just to give a teaser, think of an infinite sculptable smooth world in all three dimensions. Anything about this, though, will be after the next One Week Challenge.
    Q: How bad is your computer?
    A: It's got a decent processor, but the graphics card has about half the power of the Wii U's. At the time of recording this video, I also only had 4GB of RAM. Besides that, it only seems to have problems when I'm recording specifically for one-week challenges.
    Q: Why don't you use Visual Studio?
    A: I did prior to and after this video. I originally switched to Monodevelop because of how unstable VS 2010 was, but 2013 is great, save a few hilarious glitches that I managed to catch on tape. Look forward to it :)

      If I said I'd be down to help you with in any way, whether it'd be moral support, ideas, changing things, etc, (Obviously to avoid a complete recreation, but keeping the Minecraft style) would you actually finish it? Because I'm currently making a game that is getting no where, literally restarted more than 15 times whether it'd be because I reinstall my computer or I'm not happy with the outcome. PM me if you're more comfortable than commenting how you feel about this. (If you still wouldn't want to I'd prefer a PM so I know you at least took the time to read my offer.)

      ***** If I'm understanding right and you're asking if I'll continue on with this Minecraft, it's a no for now. Once I've done more one-week challenges, I might do a revisit/overtime series where I'd go in and implement stuff I added support for but didn't have time to implement in a demonstrable fashion, like items, combat, and multiplayer. As for restarting a project 15 times, there's nothing wrong with that if it's on your own time. Each time you do it, it will be better than it was before. It's only wasted time if you don't learn anything. If you're asking if I'd like to join a project, unfortunately the answer is a no. I tend to be more of a solo guy.

      @juggy2006 Před 9 lety

      GoodFriendsForever Being taught to make a website can be used as a good base to start from. It gives you an understanding of using scripting languages, which are pretty much like very limited programming languages, some more limited than others. But what you would be achieving is a basic understanding of coding languages in general, and an understanding of the different styles.
      For example, PHP is a scripting language, but will teach you about procedural programming and some basic understanding of Object-Oriented Programming. It will also teach your mind to think a certain way, to problem solve with logic, and forces you to think outside of the box, to achieve your goals.
      I learned PHP as my first language and now I can learn any programming language easily and quickly, because of it. All scripting languages are based off of the same or similar programming languages, they all share similar syntax and follow similar programming rules and concepts. Thus, making it easy to transition from one language to another.
      Once you understand one language, you pretty much understand them all or at least most.These days, building a modern website, isn't that much different to making some software with a GUI.

      ***** Well, it's pretty wrong to put everyone under the same line.
      Because some do actually copy scripts, or at least parts and only make their own little touch to them, and then of course, there are the ones who actually just re-create an already existing product, but from scratch.
      It is wrong to say "No, they do a shit ton less." Since i'm making a huge generalization. But the same way goes for the opposite side, saying it's the complete opposite.
      What i meant was somewhat a joke, but of course with a bit of intent.
      Hope you get what i mean though.
      All love!
