  • I had a great conversation with Mike from the China Guitar Sceptic channel! Here we talk about Chinese guitar manufacturing, stigmas against it and how they are changing, plus the overall perception of the quality of guitars from different countries. This was a fascinating conversation that I really enjoyed having and I'm very happy to bring it to you.

      This is true for 20 years ago, but not 60 years and beyond. A lot of valid points made in this video that I support and that deserve a continued discussion going forward. On the same coin however, they speak as if the past didn't exist haha. A skilled craftsman is a skilled craftsman, regardless of geographical location (this notion is finally starting to be generally accepted). Nobody is at 100% all of the time, and this is especially true for people in a highly competitive job market, toiling to meet a quota and/or performing a repetitive task all day long. In instances such as these, quality control, streamlined production, and advanced modern manufacturing technologies are pertinent to ensure the success and proper caliber of the finished product. All of which were common issues that the majority of "overseas" factories faced until 5 or so years ago. It's not that these factories couldn't make top tier instruments. The concern was mainly "can they consistently produce quality high tolerance instruments?" and "Is the one I ordered a stud or a dud?". The internet, as well as connectivity in general, has also been a major factor in ushering in the age of high quality/ low cost instruments. You can no longer rest solely on the laurels of an accomplished name brand... if you make and sell a shit product, everyone is just a click away from knowing that it's shit. Likewise, this environment has made it possible for start-ups with terrible names (i.e. Harley Benton) to thrive by producing instruments high value/low cost instruments, sans the frivolity of well established and archaic "household name" companies.

      Great video Max. The idea of "American exceptionalism" has infiltrated the guitar market, and influences buyers. That's why American guitars are so overpriced. And why people will pay a premium price for them. The Chinese guitar makers can build inexpensive guitars because the cost of living is much less. It's not "slave labor" as some uneducated people insist on stating here on CZcams.

    Very good, correct and honest discussion. As a Vietnam Vet, I experienced Asian culture first hand in 1970. Over the period of my twenties I saw the Japanese government, in collaboration with American industrialists, copy, modify and develop manufacturing techniques which were second to none. Here we ignorant Americans sit, with our images of sweatshops and primitive work conditions fed to us by the government to make us feel content. LOL...While the rest of the world looks to Asia for the most innovative and creative manufactured products the world has ever offered consumers.

    Greetings from the UK! Great video, I always enjoy different perspectives on things in life and how, in this instance, buying an affordable guitar does noes necessarily equate to settling for second best or even that it's going to be poor quality. In some regards, reviews of more affordable quality equipment could be said to be more interesting than stuff that is expensive, and that's because guitars that are two grand and upwards really should be excellent without any issues, and is usually out of reach economically for many of us, but something like a Harley Benton Fusion II, a G&L ASAT, the brand Vintage, and others are redefining what a great instrument can be, and bigger brands like Fender are catching on to this and are constantly evolving with great guitars such as their 'Player' series. Mike's a lovely chap guy, I enjoy content from the both of you. Take care.

    I agree with everything that was said, except the PRS part about never letting an imperfect guitar leaving the factory. I bought a Dave Navarro signature and there was visible wood glue around the neck and body, came not setup, and the neck was warping because they didn’t let the wood thoroughly dry. However, they did take it back and set a new one that was perfect out of the box.

    Always enjoy your videos Max, never miss a one. I am in total agreement. As I have stated in some of your other videos, I got an attitude with Gibson these days. Poor customer service and even the quality seems to have dropped from what I have seen others post. I have mentioned this before but sold my Gibson Les Paul and kept my high end Epiphone Les Paul and just hot rodded it a bit and it plays as nice and sounds as good to me better then my Gibson did. I have watched quite a few videos on the Chibson guitars coming from China and seen some astounding work being done to them to give them that Gibson quality sound and feel. Eric C has videos on how to totally rework a Chibson from neck to body.
    I think a lot of other musicians are starting to wake up to overseas made guitars.

    It's like double standards.

    • @RickMcCargar
      @RickMcCargar Před 5 lety +18

      It's because it takes years to develop skills and factory quality. When Japan first started making consumer electronics after WWII, they were often literally made in people's homes. My now-deceased business partner worked with a Japanese man to build TVs, transistor radios and later home stereos. They taught one block of people to assemble tuner circuits, another to frequency converters, another the chassis, etc. Naturally quality was terrible, but the price was very low because those workers required very little money to buy clothes, food etc.
      As the Japanese economy improved, factories were built, people trained to work in a production environment. As time went on they moved from producing cheap crap to high quality products.
      When the cost of doing business and end product prices went up in Japan, production moved to other countries like China, India and others and the same process repeated minus the home-built part.
      I spent years building a semiconductor design and manufacturing company with facilities in the U.S., Europe and Asia.
      I started visiting China in the first decade after Nixon opened up trade with China. At the time, 95% of all Chinese were peasants. We built their factories, we trained them etc...
      People remember the time in which the product was low-quality and low-price, and don't necessarily stay up with the advancements as they're made.
      It's consumer ignorance more than anything else
      edit: there is one other point to be made though, over the years, we allowed our manufacturing to be moved to low-cost countries and in so doing lost millions of high-paying factory jobs...in effect, we traded our good jobs for cheap crap from other countries.
      When you think "I'm saving a ton of money on a guitar", you don't think about the depressed wages here in the U.S. because those jobs are now gone. You saved money on that guitar at the expense of having better pay. Was it a good trade? Not for everyone.
      I made out like a bandit...did you?

    • @alabamahebrew
      @alabamahebrew Před 5 lety +4

      No Andy it's not weird, let me put it this way, if you buy a new Chinese made electronic you buy it from a local store right? If you have an issue what do you do? You take it back to that store. If you buy a Chinese guitar where do you buy that from? Sometimes you can buy them from local places but most times it will be online. Now, you have an issue with that guitar, where do you take it? If my Gibson or Fender gives me an issue I can take it 30 minutes up the road to Guitar Center - see the difference?
      Plus a lot of people have an issue with buying items from companies that are selling their products so cheap because they pay their labor so cheap. Me personally, I will buy a guitar if I like it, period. I do however prefer to only buy from places that will deal directly with me if I have an issue.

    • @BAMozzy69
      @BAMozzy69 Před 5 lety +5

      @@RickMcCargar You make some good points.
      It should be noted that the US wreaked more destruction on Japan than any other industrial nation has ever experienced. We killed between 700,000 and one million Japanese civilians, most of who were incinerated. 180,000 were killed by the 2 atomic bombs. ALL heavy industry was destroyed. On the day that the surrender was signed on the Missouri, LeMay flew over 800 B-29 bombers over Tokyo. Such was the American war machine.
      With a lot of post-war US help, the Japanese people rolled up their sleeves and rebuilt their industrial base from nothing to amazing in a couple of decades.
      I can remember when Nikon challenged Leica for the 35 mm market. People were blown away by the Japanese quality. Now, 'Made in Japan' means top quality.
      China cannot do anything like that because of the onerous government control of the population, and the government sponsored cheating and scamming culture that prevails there today.

I have a "high end" Epiphone and it's a great guitar, AFTER i spend some time and money getting - 1) frets leveled 2) replaced the nut 3) fixed the radius on the saddles 4) etc... You have to do this and much more on these chinese guitars. Now, i'm sure that you can get a good one, but for my money I much prefer to spend more money on something done in a country that has years of experience as opposed to otherwise. Frankly, they could make some really good guitars, i just haven't seen any of the "copies" that were worth even the $200 plus shipping (i think they are closer to 5 or $600) they cost. I have three guitars from China - one Ibanez, one Jackson, and one Stagg. They are all as good as any other guitar I've ever played that fit my short fingers. I've had a Japanese Strat and a Japanese Ibanez 7-String for 20 years, and they are amazing. I also made it a point to do my own research on modern factories in China, and how things have evolved - and I think it's important to be informed. Great video!!

      Incidentally, I did replace the bridge pickup in my Stagg M350, but it was then that I found that The original pickup is wax-potted. I asked Stagg if all their pickups were waxed, and they confirmed this. I think that's pretty cool. I also just adore that guitar - it's made of Alder, Maple, and has a rosewood fingerboard - and it plays great! It also has THE nicest Sunburst finish I've ever enjoyed.

    Hi Max! Very intresting video. I have some Chinese copy guitars and I am happy with them. they all needed to be set up but they were very cheep. In Australia the range of choice is stereotypically limited. If I go to a guitar shop I can by any guitar. It will be earthy black or wood grain finnished. Now don't get me wrong I like thighs finishes but it's like that's all we have to choose from. With all my Chinese copy guitars the thing that attracted me most was the colors. and patens on the instruments. My favorite is my fright green hybrid tele. It's a hollow body 22 fret twin humbucker with a maple neck and it has a licensed floyd rose. I can't get a guitar like that in Australia. Take care Max from your pal Helcat in Australia.

    Max, you do a great thing on your channel, destroying the myth of out of reach guitars for new, young, or even seasoned players. I have to say that you are one of three You Tube guitar channels that I watch, along with Darrel Braun, and Jonathon Kohl. You three , in my perception are the best out there. In fact, I have suggested to Darrel and Jonathon in my comments, that you three should get together and do a You Tube music video, nobody else could touch it! And I can't wait to read that book Factfulness. I have known in my inner man for a long time, that things aren't near as bad as they are portrayed to be. And without getting political, I think the current events of the day, along with the endless insanity and blatant lies of mainstream media, have proven the point of the book, without even having to read it. Thanks for everything.

    Having some experience with Chinese manufacturing I feel compelled to point out that the advantage is far more than wages. Quality is increasing by leaps and bounds offshore and they are not generally built by children but some of the advantages are in the area of worker safety and working conditions. Very few factories operate on an 8hour day and overtime or productivity bonuses are not expected, much of which is culturally motivated. And although PPE has become more standardized, the environmental controls on most of these factories is nearly non existent. China is #1 in poor air quality and is experiencing serious issues with clean drinking water.

      They are highly untrustworthy! For them it's all about getting the goods produced and out of the door. If you don't have your own QC team doing very rigorous checks there, they'll send you crap thats not specified -- as we found out with medical equipment, that our stupid management produced in china.
      The first 10.000 units we inspected 25% of them. Of that 25% around 30% did not meet spec! And we even found units that had different resistor and capacitor values! When we asked why the hell that was! They said: "We ran out of components. So we took the nearest value, it will work no worries!" It's a good thing that was a video call, because I would've fucking punched his glasses through his skull! It's ILLEGAL to change your registered designs of medical products. They are approved and registered as such, so changing the specs is not allowed without actually re-registering and approving your new design.
      But they don't care because it's out of their factory on time.
      So we ended up sending 3 people doing 24 hour shifts of QC. Kicking Chinese management for everything that went wrong. They hated us for it. Every time it was: "but it will work. it is fine! that doesn't matter".
      And that's electronics, which they are really good at!
      And after that contract we moved the production to Poland. Now that's quality! Proactive people, they do exactly what is asked and don't deviate. They call if supply is stuck and don't "wing it".

    I really enjoyed this. I have 2 Harley Bentons and they're great. 1 is the TE-80, the Prince guitar (which did need substantial setup and shimming) and a 5 string HBZ-2005 (which didn't) and they're both amazing. I own other guitars too...2 Ibanez (one chrome JS10th), 2 Fernandes, a Taylor, a Hamer (bass), a Rickenbacker 360, so it's not like I only have cheap guitars as a frame of reference... You really don't have to pay zillions for quality anymore, as long as you have a good guitar tech in your area. Also, love the other guy's accent. He must be from the same area as Ricky Gervais.

      My Japanese,Indonesian, Chinese and made in Mexico guitars are definitely good enough for me. I know a lot of the American made are great quality, but I can't justify paying 5 to 10 times more for a guitar that in a lot of cases looks or plays no better than foreign made. And a lot of people don't understand that the wage and the cost of living can be way lower in these other countries. I imagine the skilled builders and luthiers here are paid a very high wage, as they should be. The cost of living is also very high in most of the US. Then you also have the American manufacturers that pay lower wages, produce a lot of guitars and mark them up to make ridiculous profits. Sure that $5,000 Martin or Taylor sound and look great....but so do the Japanese and Chinese Yamahas and some other brands for a forth or fifth the price.

    I've been saying for awhile that we are in the golden age of "cheap" guitars. Never have you been able to get as many features on a guitar as you have been now for a less than premium price. I have two budget guitars that I absolutely love and am incredibly happy with the product. I would never be able to afford a true ES335 , but I could afford my FF338 and I love it just the same. Plus I play it a lot more and a lot "freer" because I'm not afraid to scuff it or ding it or play hard on it.
