  • In the late 19th century, the Asociación Espiritual de Devotos de San José, with Josep Maria Bocabella as its president, decided to build a temple dedicated to the Holy Family. The Foundation charter states that the Temple would “Exalt the faith and embrace charity”.
In 1883, Antoni Gaudí took over the project for the Sagrada Família, remaining true to the founding principles of the Temple, and always showed great concern for the people. Gaudí took care of the workers on the site and their families. At a time when people didn’t have pensions or government aid, Gaudí made sure the older workers were assigned the tasks that were less physically taxing so they could continue working. For the workers’ children and the kids in the neighbourhood, he built mixed schools right next to the Temple.
So, drawing from our founders, from the spirit of Gaudí’s work and from the social doctrine of the Church, the Junta Constructora de la Sagrada Família Board of Trustees has created the Sagrada Família Social Action Fund to help the most socially vulnerable groups in the Archdiocese of Barcelona.
