My twist is to caramelise (extra flavour) the onions in a pot, then add the hydrated split peas and I ALWAYS use bacon bones for extra flavour. A touch of garlic is yummy as well. My kids will always come from far and wide for my pea soup. Love from Australia.
I just did excatly this way and soup came out beautiful ;)
Split Pea Soup - How To Make Split Pit Pea and Ham Soup 2318pm 26.8.23 i said caramelize th' onions... but was pooh-poohed by the olds from the depths of the 'eld hearth and home brigade ie: the old women who know best. and for the hated veggie twist... those veggie faux meat slices you can chop up and throw in for added flavour or..... faux hot dogs cut up into pieces and added after they have been boiled in the pan. that tastes pretty nice..... tonight? homemade bread and split pea and leek soup.
I must have skipped over like 5 other split pea recipe videos and decided that yours - like always - is the best. You don't sit there and talk about your life story and the impact the soup had on your as a child for 12 minutes. You just start in with "here's what we're making, let's go" and it's fantastic.
I didn't have any ham, but I used cut up smoked kielbasa sausage. Worked out great! My second attempt was to carnalize the onions, brown the ham, and then add the rehydrated peas. I also used homemade chicken broth rather than water. Dayuum...this was a dish fit for a processing plant with a humongous freeze-drying machine! And yes, don't forget the Bay leaves! I also used my microplane grater to grate in a couple of garlic cloves. Thank you Mr. Wolf for providing the guidance to deviate from the basic recipe!
It has been a decade since I've made split-pea soup. We're guests at an Easter dinner tomorrow so I won't have a nice ham bone to simmer to make it. In lieu of that, I bought some ham steaks this afternoon to make a pre-Easter dinner of split pea soup and ham.
I used your recipe with a simple Cook's bone-in sliced ham steak. I made a half pot but went ahead and used the entire ham steak which was close to 1.5#. Nothing wrong with a bit more meat!
It was delicious. Thanks for sharing this recipe.
I tried this recipe tonight and it turned out really good. This is the first homemade soup I have ever made. I kept the video next to me in the kitchen and I had no trouble following along. Thank you!
Oh I been making for years... now I even have ventured in to Zuppa Toscana, knock off from Olive garden
Who else is finally using their dry goods during COVID?
Hello can you use can peas?
@@anahivelazquez7017
I imagine you could.
Man I’m breaking open the shelves now. I gotta find some very good split pea recipes
@@anahivelazquez7017 My ex incorrectly claims canned green peas are different peas. Split peas and canned peas are processed differently. The soups will be slightly different. After the peas melt into mush, I can't tell the different.
💯
Split pea soup is eaten in Finland a lot, but we soak the whole peas for 12 hour, and then boil them. Smoked bones and ham and marjoram are added and simmered for few hours. Eaten with mustard and onion. Excelent stuff.
Sounds good
That's just pea soup then. Still good, though.
Do you change the water before boiling?
@@burneggroll No need to.
That sounds amazing. 🤤
Grandpa used to make this for me with hotdogs instead of ham, and sometimes he'd add diced potatoes to it as well ... delicious!!
Split peas are super cheap when bought in bulk, so I have been adding them to my stock of preps lately. A little curry powder is tasty when mixed in to the soup.
I never liked peas as kid but when was about 22-23 I went to my aunt's house after working outside in the cold winter weather of Maine and she had a homemade pea soup with Ham chunks in it and she said try it and I was kinda concerned into it but ever since that I love pea soup 😂 great stuff! Going to make one here soon
Finally an American who seems to know what he's doing with this dish. I've seen some put in liquid smoke, and saying you want some of the split peas with still a bite, and more of that nonsense.
This clip is just good.
I'd personally put in leeks instead of onions, and a cup of cubed celeriac is great, but your recipe is very clear and easy to follow, and the end dish looks great.
My recipe is nearly identical to his, except that I use bacon ends, minced garlic, and dice the carrots smaller.
I'm ordering green and yellow split peas right now. Can't wait to try this
good one. I used sausages instead of ham. The original Dutch recipe is so complicated that I never made it. This was easy and to be honest the best I ever had :)
Thank you for making your wonderful videos short!
There is nothing like hearty split pea soup on a cold day. I like to add some chicken boullioun to the water, and also to use kielbasa instead of ham at times for a good flavor.
I never thought of keilbasa! YES YES YES.
@@c_farther5208 so agreed. Now that it was brought up, gotta make some!!
Kielbasa makes everything better.
My mother made S Pea soup like this however she used a couple bay leaves and fresh garlic. Yummy 😋
Bay Leaf and Garlic takes it to another level, absolutely agree 💯
I always get good recipes from here and from the comments as well. TheWolfePit taught me about that stuff which is better than bouillon. I never heard of that but you learn a lot of things about cooking on these channels. Making this today. However, there is a better than ham bouillon I ordered so I could skip the ham and get the flavor but have to wait a week.
I've tried a few different recipes through CZcams. This one is the best! It's the real deal! Only difference I made was added fresh chopped garlic and a little bit of olive oil during the last stage.
This is so delicious and budget friendly. I've made this many times and served it with cornbread. Thanks so much for posting.
Mmmm, cornbread! I usually don't like sweet cornbread but I I wanted another recipe to use up some super coase ground cornmeal I had (called "Red Floriani") so I tried the Bob's Red Mill cornbread recipe on the medium grind cornmeal package. I made double the quantity and baked it in a hot 12" cast iron skillet. I sliced the cold leftovers into thick slices and froze them stacked as is unwrapped in thin plastic clamshell food containers. When I wanted to reheat some I just toasted pieces in my air fryer. That toasted the outside made it into a wonderful cornbread rusks! Still tender on the inside but golden brown outside. Best rusks you could wish for! So make more cornbread than you need and make rusks quickly whenever you wish!
I cut the recipe in half (kind of, I only used half gallon of water and one pound split peas then used full recipe veggies and ham) and I also added celery. I had purchased a ham steak just for this soup. I was SO pleased with how this turned out.
This is the second time of making this delicious recipe!! Thank you, My whole family loved it!
I sweat leeks and celery instead of onion for a new twist. I like how you added bay leaf. It takes an hour for ham hock to soften and impart flavor. I add a bit of sour cream on top just before serving. Hearty and healthy
Been cooking for MANY years; recently received a free whole ham so deboned it and made a ham broth using the bone & bit pieces over 2 days. Done the ham & bean soup recently so trying split pea for the first time. Threw some things together then decided to look at some videos when I came across yours, very similar to to how you made it and that makes me feel good. Your videos are the best and I hope mine comes out as good as yours!
I’ll bet that was tasty.
@@VivKittie32 Thank you, the peas didn't work. The original is the best.
@@VivKittie32 Thank you very much. It even impressed my hardcore friends. Always appreciate comments like yours.
This is one of my favorites, super easy..taste phenomenal and hell like you said its good for you too! I throw the whole ham hawk in.
One of my all time favorite dishes.
Over her in the Netherlands it's often labeled to as 'Snert".
Recipe isn't too different, though we usually also add celery, diced potatoes and sausage.
Ultimate bad weather food.
The potatoes and sausage sound like a great addition! 'Snert' doesn't sound too appetizing though!! LOL Thanks for watching!
Jeroenoman
Here in the USA, "snert" is what comes out of your nose when you have a headcold HahaHAA!
I think I'll pass on the 2nd helping of snert...
Thank you so much for this recipe, Mr. Wolfe Pit! 😍 it brings back memories of when my Mom worked in a restaurant many years ago and would bring their pea soup hime as a treat. This tastes exactly like that soup and is perfect.
I've seen this video like 300 times. I make this soup once a month for my wife. Its just perfect, Just like my mom used to make them! Thanks!
A man of culture!
One of my very faves!! Love it.
One of my all-time favorite soups!
+thegoatman62 Mine too Mark! Thanks for watching!!
Can't wait to try!
Nice, simple, thorough. Thanks so much!
Oh my looks so yummy! Thanks you for the recipe.
Thank You! It came out really good.
Looks just like my mom used to make. Thank you for the recipe and video.
Another great recipe Larry, you and i could be brothers because we are almost always on the same page when it comes to cooking recipes, especially southern recipes
That looks so good.
My favorite ! I take out the ham & veggies, and use an immersion blender on the peas.
So excited to make this!
Making it at the moment. One of my go to comfort foods now. Thanks for the recipe.
This was a favorite Lenten recipe in my family, but I’ve never prepared it, so I’m trying this one today. I have a ham hock because I love the flavor, and I have some ham that I will use as well. I remember Mom mashing the peas, but your recipe has them getting mushy all on their own.Thanks.!
Looks delicious. Thanks for sharing.
Making this right now. So nice and easy. Hope it turns out as good as yours looks.
One of my favorites!
I have always been a big fan of soup, I love you recipe for this split pea soup with ham, and absolute classic recipe
+The Bald Chef I love it too Glen and don't know why I don't make it more often?!?! Thanks for watching!!
Thank you! Made some yesterday and didn’t really love it. I want the look of yours so I’m going to try yours today. Thank you!
Boy I sure want some of that! I should've added those hints!!
Wow, that looks so delicious...
This will be dinner tonight. Thank you for posting, sir.
Hope you enjoy! Please let me know how you like it!
Was fantastic. I did edit slightly by carmelizing onions first, and I also boiled wiht a smoked ham hock. Will make again for sure.
@@TheWolfePit ... Why not not " country ham "? And I guess I don't know the difference.... Are you referring to fresh ham?? Actually just learning the differences between hams.... didn't know there were as many as there are 😉
That looks so incredible! I'm definitely making this!!
+fullmetal0621 Thank you very much! Hope you enjoy!
Used a ham bone with quite a bit of meat left and chicken broth! When done took bone out and removed meat before adding meat took an immersion blender to peas and carrots then added meat. OMG Absolutely delicious thanks for the tips! First time but will be doing this at least once a year now! ( Only had Stuart Anderson's before) and was afraid Mine wouldn't come close. I was wrong it was better!
Looks delicious! We don't eat pork, but I will try chicken or beef to see which tastes best. Thank you for making this so easy! I like how you let it sit for 1 hour after a quick boil! It was my mother's favorite soup. Perfect timing for this winter storm. Appreciate it!
Thanks!! I love it ! But never made it ! Thought it was much harder to make ?!? Awesome !! 👍👍
Love split pea soup. It is comforting. I use smoked turkey :)
+Tess Cooks 4u Thank you Tess, smoked turkey is a great alternative!!!!
@@TheWolfePit your adult playground is no longer the Dollar tree! They raised their prices to 1.25!
Great Recipe... Thank you 😊😊😊
I know what to do with my leftover ham now! Looks delicious, Larry!
Always good. Thanks
On to it right now! Thanks for the recipe.
Looks amazing
I make split pea soup pretty often. I'll use either a half of a ham steak, one or two smoked ham shanks or hocks or two or three smoked pork neck bones. Any of those work just fine.
Just made this, it was stunning 👍 I also added celery.
Looks delicious 😋
Thank you. YUM! God Bless and stay safe.
This and some pancakes on a thursday... Mmm, love it.
So good, thanks.
Just like Mom used to make!! Thanks
Looks good........cooking it right now......wish me luck!
Yummy recipe, thanks for sharing😊👍
I love pea soup and yours look delicious, yummy. Great for this cold weather.
+Irma Pereira-Rivera Thank you very much Irma!
Thanks for posting. I'm now down with the WolfePit!
One of my favorite comfort foods!
+Laurie Hintz Mine too Laurie! Thank you for watching!
This is a good recipe, it's the type of soup we make in the Caribbean except we add coconut milk and dumplings to the mix
When do you add the coconut milk?
I'm making this. Haven't had it since I left Germany. Now if I could find some brochen, it would be perfect! Thanks for the video!
Nice and simple making it right now!
It's a cold Tuesday in South Africa, I needed this recipe. Definitely making this today
Great looking soup, I love the bay leaves. easy to make, Good job
+Chef John Politte (It's Only Food) Thanks John!!
Yummy..I did it! Thank you Wolfe!
Really like this recipe. Only thing I did different was I sauteed the onions, carrots, ham cubes, and minced garlic first, giving it a richer, roasted flavor. Then I added them to the boiling peas. Near the end I took your advice and added some half and half. This soup turned out so good, I couldn't believe it. One of the reasons why is because I haven't made split pea soup with ham in over 40 years. Your recipe was presented so well that it gave me the confidence to give it a try again.
i love this recipe looks so good like the way southerns do it
+Esther Rosas Thank you very much Esther! Hope you give it a try!
Larry
I love this soup!! Great recipe Larry!
+Cheryl K (CherylsHomeCooking) Thank you Cheryl!
oh this is great!;;; thank-you so much
my husband favorite dish!!!!!
great recipe, & I love the ease of hydrating the peas
ty xx
+sagedwoman333 Thank you ma'am!!!
One thing I really liked about this recipe is the pan you used. A regular frying pan with a see through top. Great idea. Thanks for the recipe. I do, however, agree with JD Brunette - saute your aromatics first. Really does develop the flavor.
Awesome recipe Larry... One of my all time fav's, and now I can make it for myself thanks to you. Always a treat when you share something with us sir! Again, BEST channel ever...
+Ray Lovett Thank you very much Ray I really appreciate that! Please let me know how you like the split pea soup!!
I will Larry. You ARE the man! :-)
Great winter recipe! I'll be making this next time I'm off duty for the family. Thanks!
+Eric Miller Thanks Eric! Hope you enjoy!
That looked so delicious and I like the way you think...haha add cream..... Amazing an I'm going to try to. Thanks.
🌱 Nice, simple video and just how my dad makes it.😊👍thanks 4 the video.
Sir, I made your soup and added two smoked pork neckbones. The smokey neckbones added a slot of flavor but destroyed the nice green color. Despite that, I'd do it again!
I ate two bowls of soup and realized I was really darn full. I wobbled off to bed and the soup must have cured and expanded in my stomach. I was considering calling an ambulance if it got much worse. I was sort of scared because I realized the soup would probably clog the stomach pumping machine.
Its been 3 hours and I'm still darn full ... its maybe the most delicious thing I've ever had. Thank you! When I do it again, I'm going to use smoked sausage with some kind of smoked pork bone.
it turned out wonderful!
+Laurie Campbell Thank you Laurie! Glad you enjoyed it!!
Thanks wolfepit 💯
I had the pleasure of having this for lunch yesterday and let me say...IT WAS GOOD!!
+Lisa Bradshaw Glad you liked it Lisa! Now if you could only convert G.
I cheated myself by making this in a pan, it's not enough. Now I'm making this in a 3 gallon stock pot, And freezing 10ea. 1 quart meal portions. The fresh balance I eat for a few days. I tried whole fingerling potatoes and whole smoked turkey thighs and shreaded the turkey after a 3 hour simmer. Too satisfying
Awesome as usual ! Thanks for sharing !!
+Tony Reynolds Thank you very much Tony!!!
Larry
