one of my best sessions came from fishing near tadpoles, 12 inch supple braid tied directly to a size 8 wide gape, a small blob of putty on the eye of the hook to resemble a tadpole and then soak the hook and around 2-3 inches of braid in blood worm liquid, bobs your uncle.
10 fish in an acre and had 5 of them that day

I’ve had carp on dead roach while fishing for pike the bait was a good 6” long as well

My largest carp still to this date came on a dead bait intended for perch. I’m sure they’d eat a tadpole
