  • What is the best way to clean Aluminum frames?? In this video I put two methods to clean aluminum frames to the test to figure out whether vapor blasting or more of an old school method of using Aluminum wheel cleaner, scotch brite pads, PRYME pads, and wire brushes on a Dremel work best! Not all people have a weekend warrior like to clean their frames so I walk you through a more manual method as well which can be done by any one in their garage.
    Which method do you think works best? Have any questions, leave them below! As always, all tools I use in this video are listed below. Thanks!

    Vapor blasting really had changed the bike building and parts restoration game.

    They both look good ! I only had the chance to do a frame with wheel cleaner and it turned out amazing. I'm just waiting to do one in the vapor blaster

      It's crazy how well the stuff works! Was cool to be able to do both methods to compare, either way you will get a sweet result

      Thanks dude! And they will look better once they are connected to an engine lol

    Amazing job always ! The vapor blasted one seems the easiest way once you have the machine ! The scrubbing 🧽 is time consuming my question is does the sanding removes material from the frame ?

      Thanks Art! The vapor blasting method is more time efficient for sure, if you have one! The pryme wheels do remove the frame material/ano but I have never had an issue with this being a problem down the road. If anything you can touch them up again with the wheels👍🏼

    JGR used to polish their YZ frames to a mirror. Sick looking

      I'd love to go to that level with a future build!

    Would the CR frame fit in your vapor blaster? Or do you think a newer CRF frame would fit?

    • @GregHitchko
      @GregHitchko  Před 3 lety +2

      Oh yeah! The CR frames definitely fit in there as well. Would have saved me a bunch of time but I wanted to do both ways for the sake of the video

    Vapor blasting looks good but if you don’t have access to a machine or shop. Napa sells an aluminum brighter that works amazing with a scotch bright pad and a power wash. Cool water with the acid cleaners is the key, not hot water.

    • @GregHitchko
      @GregHitchko  Před 2 lety

      The Napa aluminum brightener is also a great choice if you can't find the mag wheel cleaner for sure! Didn't know about the hot vs. cold water.

    Did the CR Frame fit in your blasting cabinet? I know its slightly bigger.

    • @GregHitchko
      @GregHitchko  Před 2 lety

      It did! For sure tighter but it works 👍🏼

    What abrasive media did you use in the blaster?

    • @GregHitchko
      @GregHitchko  Před 3 lety

      20lb of glass bead plus 5lb of aluminum oxide! 25 lb total for the machine.

    Time is money. Don’t have the free time to spend 3 hours + cleaning a frame. Wish I had the budget for a vapor blaster.

    • @GregHitchko
      @GregHitchko  Před 3 lety

      You can say that again! For sake of time I would have preferred to just vapor blast both but wanted to show it can be done the ol' fashion way to compare for those without one.

    Just two cents any wire brush or wire wheel should be made of stainless steel carbon brushes impregnates the aluminum with carbon, or in the welding world we call it cross contamination. Be careful you guys
