- Mistakes were made, but we've finally (mainly) completed the main bedroom. Lots of plastering and painting, but it's good to have our own space. Now if we could finish the Japanese garden it would be perfect...

Im actually a huge fan of the wooden boards used to give the exposed beam look. Really adds to that wall. Looking at that and imagining an empty wall there doesn't really do the space justice in my opinion! Love the house keep up the great work mate, hopefully you get the upstairs office area done before the blistering Japanese Summer comes around, I'm hoping that the temperatures keep that room usable year round. Thanks for the video :)
Thanks mate, yeah want to work on upstairs ASAP. Using the bedroom as an office at the moment. Decided that we probably will insulate the roof so adds to the cost/time of the project.
I have toured numerous structures designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. I sure can see that he truly did take a lot of inspiration from the Japanese and his time spent their designing the great imperial hotel. The guest bedroom at Taliesin, his home in Wisconsin, definitely has the ceilings and structural supports Reminiscent of Japanese Architecture. In his words “Organic architecture”.
. .p
The wooden beams are a really great solution! It looks so nice and makes the room more comfortable.
Btw I had to laugh way too hard when you started „reading“ war and peace XD
Thanks, and glad you liked the joke.
Love the colors and hiding the plaster bleed through with the wood was a really nice touch. sometimes mistakes can really help with transforming a space.
Its never about how you perfectly master your craft, its always about learning how to hide your crime and turn it into happy accidents while improving your skills. Good job as always😉
Thanks very much!
Its crazy, every time i wonder "whats tokyo llama up to?" I see a fresh video on youtube. Love the work! Its been a great joy to share your journey.
Thanks, appreciate the kind words.
That bedroom ended up looking really good! I like the blue color you choose for the shikkui - we used almost exactly the same color downstairs in our place too! AND the exposed wood posts&beams as well. Although your new place is a lot more traditional than ours, we ended up with a lot of the same aesthetic. Come down to visit sometime and I’ll give you a tour! (And maybe we can finally get around to that collaboration video. Or just beer? 🍻)
Thanks man, will let you know if I’m ever down your way.
Yeah the yellow goes really well next to the wood beams.
The seam-hiding beams look just fine and the lighting turned out great. It seems that drywall seams are an issue for everyone everywhere. Question - how is noise in the house? I've fully insulated floors and ceilings and my boys + my 20lb cat still sound like a herd of buffalo when running through the house. Also, (totally unrelated) how is your wifi signal? Do you need lots of repeaters or separate wifi points?
@@johnbatchelder7168 Never saw someone use "I've" like that.
@@Mrshoujo neither have I! I think maybe I was using voice to text here and didn't read carefully.
The cat seal of approval , no higher compliment.
I hate how invested I am in your house. Every time I see a new video I can't click it fast enough. Thank you for making these.
No worries, thanks for watching!
You did a great job! Can't wait to see the landscaped area outside of the bedroom. Waking up to a beautiful garden is an awesome way to start your day.
Yes, so many things I want to do but would love to get that garden done asap.
I could hear your wife's eyes rolling when you made that "red light district" lighting mode comment. Too funny!
Nice update on your home's progress and those faux beams were a stroke of genius. They just give that otherwise normal wall 'life' and make it structurally interesting.
Ha ha, I don't think she's seen the video yet but I'm sure she will give me some kind of look for that comment!
That is actually a legit red-light district lighting. Reminds me of the Red-Light District Arc of Demon Slayer.
Deleted like to keep the 69, it seems appropriate! Love the content.
The „fail correction“ made it look special. Great idea!
Thanks a lot!
Cats ALWAYS know the best spots to sleep! I’d say she gave it a paws up! 🐾 ⬆️
That's honestly an impressive work for a guest room that's "rushed". If I were to room that, I will greatly appreciate the effort of just the thought making the people staying over comfortable and welcomed. Love the accent wall and the exposed woods 💖✨
The organic feeling of these traditional Japanese homes is very settling… They seem well balanced if that makes sense. I enjoy the differences. I look forward to each video especially how you plan to landscape. Well done.
Thank you!
your traditional board seam cover up makes the room look so much better. I really like how this turned out
Thank you!
Always love to see your updates. You really make me wish I could get started on my journey of property ownership. Spent my early years helping my parents renovate plenty of our houses, but never had the chance to do my own. Looking to take that step in about five to ten years from now. You're a true inspiration!
Thanks and good luck. We waited longer than most of my friends but it turned out okay.
So many great things about this video, Jaya! Your choice if stain on the the ceiling beams was a great accent as well as the color choices. From what you have taught us about the properties of shikui (sp), we are glad you found a way to correct your mistakes. And the clumsy way you shifted the book at the end was just genius as your wife panned across the window where you were sitting.
Thank you! You must have a similar sense of humour to me!
The drumming sound in your intro leading into the thumping sound of the mallet/hammer is so clever. Thanks for taking us along on your homes journey to a new life. It's been amazing being able to follow along on the progress ✨💛
Thanks for noticing! No worries, thanks for watching.
Agreed! I thought that effect was pretty smooth too.
I think adding the wood to the wall to hide the seams was a really good thing, it gives so much character then it just comes out perfect, I always found that creativity can come through problems when things don't work out when they are supposed to (not all the time mind you) like with the rest of this beautiful home it looks amazing :D
Thanks a lot!
the synthetic beams workaround: 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽
The traditional beam cover up looked awesome! Way better then just a smooth wall.
Vann it be 2yrs since you bought this (then) abandoned house! I have learned SO MUCH about vernacular Japanese architecture! Thank you for the journey to your beautiful home! Well done!
I appreciate the reappearance of the song "Walls" - I guess it's to be expected of you given your sense of humor. Your first epic shikkui video ended up spreading the awesome music of Eden Maze further around the world!
You would win the prize (if there was one) for noticing! I was wondering if anyone would pick up on that. Well done!
Sound proof walls, and red light district lights 😏 I like your style.
Really liking the "Frosty Dawn" setting @11:03
At the end of the scene his face when pretending to be reading 📚😄 this guy is soo patient than any other renovation company. Thanks for your efforts !👍👏
great touch with war and peace vs cell phone
Love the War and Peace joke! I saw your first couple of videos a few years ago, so it's great to see you've started to introduce more humor.
Be careful with those led strips. The very cheap ones can sometimes short and spark up/light on fire.
You should probably make sure that they sit on top of fire proof material.
The dovetail joinery of the main support beam is the kind of precision that will always amaze me.
And he knocked it up in only a few minutes!
We live in a 1905 house that was moved in 1957. The nails and paper tape are everywhere. We’ve used dark paint but I also want those strips on my walls.
The wooden beams ended up looking great, and i love your sleeping cat decoration! We have the hue lights in our home too, I love putting a video of a fireplace on the tv and setting the lights to a deep orange.
I have lights above our stove/TV area, I'll give deep orange a try next time with our stove blazing!
I actually think the faux exposed wood beams really make the room pop. Excellent design choice.
Thank you, definitely happy with the result.
Looking fantastic, the beams cover the problem and add so much to the room! Love it. I can't wait to see what you do with the garden outside the window!
Thanks, looking forward to the garden renovation!
It’s absolutely superb! The cat loves it so it’s 100% approved!
So great that you introduce things you didn’t do the right way first time. Makes people like me ( who spent hours scraping off paint applied without a concrete sealer?!) feel much better about failures!
i love the addition of the 'beams' on the wall. It completely transformed the bedroom!
Do you reckon you'll vlog about the updates on the work-shed too when it gets to that point? Hope your family is having a good new year so far! sending much luck from not-so-sunny Britain!
Thanks, yes, definitely plan to record the process of renovating the kura (shed).
I really enjoyed the editing style of start to finish in this video, and the music was nice!👍☺️
Thanks!
I have waited anxiously for this episode. The sweet sweet sensation seeing "Tokyo Llama" on my notifications!
Appreciate it!
What a fabulously witty storyteller. You made me smile. Thankyou
Happy to hear that, thanks for watching!
your style of editing is so calming. it's like watching PBS
I did actually read it all a long time ago. But nowadays if I start to read I fall asleep within one page.
It's amazing what your patience, creativity and perseverance has created ... to enjoy for the rest of your lives.
I love the whole room except for the blue wall, the yellow walls and the timber boards look amazing
nothing quite like waking up and having a warm coffee while watching the latest Tokyo llama video. super relaxing lol
as I parrot every time, the wait between videos is excruciating but incredibly worth it! love seeing the continued progress and always leaves me anticipating the next update!!
keep up the amazing work mate!!!
Thanks mate! Planning to release my next one sooner rather than later.
The bedroom turned out great! I love the view of the "future" Japanese garden. It's important to have goals!
All that hard work was so worth it. The room is lovely. Few chuckles too. Thank you.
Thank you!
The shot of the garden concept at 11:42 was great to see he’s thinking ahead! Think Big like the concept. Already an epic change since the start!
.
Your "exposed beam" trick really turned out nice. I can't wait to see the videos on creating your Japanese garden!
Thanks, hopefully the garden is not too far away.
Fantastic to be part of this project, doing a mighty fine job. Can't wait for next upload.🙌
Great! Thanks for watching!
👏🏽👏🏽 Maybe try switching the plant + the lamp + running the electric cord down along the side of the board + across the floor to the eccentric socket?!
That blue wall, yum. Beautiful room.
Love how much time and care you take, avoiding shortcuts I'm prone to in my work... you do it thoroughly and right the first time, or go back and fix right when you do make a mistake. Great work as always!
Thanks - though it was a bit of a short cut! Wasn’t keen to go back and try to smoothen out the wall again!
I find myself on this page at least once every few months, I honestly cannot remember the first time I’ve seen one of these videos, I just know the house was in shambles back then
Great job! I like the "Red Light District" lighting theme! 🤣🤣🤣
It appears the the cats approve of your efforts. We are lucky that they allow us to stay in their homes.
That War and Peace bit 😂 Your home is looking gorgeous as usual.
the wood beams look great the colour of them is amazing! you may need to do some cord hiding on the lamps lol i know there are plastic strips you can buy and paint to blend to your wall to clip hanging cords into
Ingenious solution hiding the seams. A few more remodels and you’ll be a master at plastering. Really, just apply a total of 3 coats with progressively larger blades, and always follow up with a couple of coats of primer, and you’ll be a pro. Those hue lights are ridiculously expensive, but the app is nice.
Thanks. Yes, the app is great.
I know this video is older now but I do want to point out how much I love the little casual goofs you sneak in at the end of the videos. Swapping out your phone for War & Peace 😂
Could not stop myself from laughing when you said "Red Light District" as one of the scenes for the coloured lights
Phillips should make it an official scene in their app.
Spectacular! The cord from the reading lamp is my only serious nit to pick. You’ve created such a nicely finished oasis. But my eye immediately goes to the dangling cord!
My husband's home had 'Old Blue' living in the rafters to take care of the mice. He said that the art of Japanese joinery brought a greater 'stability' to the family home during the many earthquakes and tremors.
I applaud your attention to details and it shows in your work. I don’t think i would have the patience. Always looking forward to your videos. The only reason i am on CZcams.
You're so good at this. I have one suggestion though. You're really good at woodworking, maybe you can make a dark wooden frame for the big lamp beside the chair? It can make the lamp look pretty.
That might work nicely, I can picture it, will add to my (long) list, thanks.
Loved the color combination and the use of wood in the guest bedroom. Another great job. Way to go.
loved this especially the cat cameo! hope all goes well you have a beautiful home already and it’s only going to get better ❤️🏴
The cat was luck, just noticed she was there when I started filming!
Been watching since the beginning of your channel! Admiration from Arkansas in the USA
lol "Frosty Dawn" sounds like the name of that old grumpy woman you always get at the end of your road.... Also small note on the floor standing lamp, you should use some small scrap wood you have to make a wood made and then use the internal and out bit from the original. love the video funny, informative, and inspiring.. loving all the colours you can get in plaster, I was fearing I would need to paint over white walls to get the same effect so good information. lastly might be work explaining to people the Japanese light socket system in the future videos I find it very cool how its modular all clicks into a bayonet style socket, but you can have a wide range of fittings without wiring them in each time. keep up the great work
Red light district 🤣. When you said that it reminded me of our previous trip to Germany
Absolutely lovely! I just can't get enough of your renovation episodes!
Your cat looks happy that you got its bedroom together.. lol Looks really good.
The whole house is for the cats it seems.
I love that shade of blue! I think the shikkui texture really adds depth to the colour and maintains that 'natural' feel. Definitely have some room envy! I'm in the process of finding a house and my imagination goes into overdrive every time I watch your videos.
Also, War & Peace... 😂😂
Thanks, I'm happy with how the blue turned out... eventually!
I love the color contrast and the exposed stained wood.... it's brilliant.
Thank you!
Hahah, reading “War & Peace” in a red light district, imagining a Zen garden, with a cat lounging on the bed! 😂😂🤣😂👌🏻👍🏻👊🏻 Your wife might smack you around a bit when she sees that!
And the beams look beautiful!
Ha ha, I don't think she's seen the video yet.
I love your house. I can only imagine how much work and heart you both put into it.
The more I watch the more I like this guy so humble and honest it’s rare to see people like that in social media, May happiness and contentment never leave your home and family 🏡💕
I like the little joke at the end 😂 I’ve been following since you started and it’s so nice to see the updates!
Thank you! It's been almost 3 years since my first video!
YAY! An update on your many projects that I have been waiting for. Don't you just hate it when something doesn't go as planned!? I do think using the post to hide the sound proofing seams made the bedroom more inviting. BTW Happy New Year to you and your family including your fur babies.
Thanks very much, happy new year to you too!
I love the wood grain on (hide my mistake wall) lol!! It’s beautiful
If at first you don't succeed read your instructions. 😊 I have learned that the hard way. The room is beautiful and you are always meticulous in your work.
Haha, I am learning…
I've been watching this renovation for a long ti.e and its always a happy surprise to see an update. Looking forward to seeing an amazing grade someday with pond.😊
I love the light segment. The narration and music got me good
Glad to hear it!
Room looks great, only thing that spoils it is the wire running down the wall from the light above the chair. Running the exposed beams certainly adds character and is in context with the theme. Great vid and thouroughly interesting!
Thanks, yes, i agree, may try to hide or replace with floor lamp.
@@TokyoLlama really enjoying watching the transformation of the house, especially enjoyed the fantastic skill on the carpentry! Thank you!
The end was hilarious!!! LOL
That bedroom looks marvelous! Very nice special touches.
I have had terrible luck at mudding and plastering so I think your work and problem-solving has had very good results. Well done.
Thanks, I'm terrible at mudding. It 's much harder than it looks!
Don't worry i believe you were reading a book, they just caught you on your phone because you where checking the time since you have yet to find a clock 😉 😂
So glad to still be watching these videos its so calming
Great work on the room, sometimes mistakes lead to wonderful out comes. The lights are terrific they really add depth and personality.
Thank you!
Once the garden is finished it will be a marvelous room! Really like the exposed shelf and illumination ideas! As always incredible work!
Thanks, yes, can’t wait to do the garden!
Love the faux posts on the wall in the bedroom.
its been damn amazing seeing the whole process, from this being a run down shit hole, to one of the coolest homes i ever seen .
Love it.
Cool! Thank you for sharing it. ✌️
Lovely 😊
Beautiful!👍
Wow! Looks great! One of my favorite this about living in old houses is making a space work for you out of something that already exists. I always share your videos with my family and friends because I think that there is so much amazing work you put into your home and videos!
Thanks a lot, appreciate it!
looks great!!
Beautiful. As always. That blue is freaking awesome. Like the ocean!
Looks amazing
Fully approve your future-Japanese-Garden vision. Wait, that IS a Koi pond in the center, right????
Ha ha, I grabbed that one quickly. Is there a koi pond? Will have to show the mrs what it might look like.
