  • Mistakes were made, but we've finally (mainly) completed the main bedroom. Lots of plastering and painting, but it's good to have our own space. Now if we could finish the Japanese garden it would be perfect...

Im actually a huge fan of the wooden boards used to give the exposed beam look. Really adds to that wall. Looking at that and imagining an empty wall there doesn't really do the space justice in my opinion! Love the house keep up the great work mate, hopefully you get the upstairs office area done before the blistering Japanese Summer comes around, I'm hoping that the temperatures keep that room usable year round. Thanks for the video :)

Thanks mate, yeah want to work on upstairs ASAP. Using the bedroom as an office at the moment. Decided that we probably will insulate the roof so adds to the cost/time of the project.

I have toured numerous structures designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. I sure can see that he truly did take a lot of inspiration from the Japanese and his time spent their designing the great imperial hotel. The guest bedroom at Taliesin, his home in Wisconsin, definitely has the ceilings and structural supports Reminiscent of Japanese Architecture. In his words “Organic architecture”.

That bedroom ended up looking really good! I like the blue color you choose for the shikkui - we used almost exactly the same color downstairs in our place too! AND the exposed wood posts&beams as well. Although your new place is a lot more traditional than ours, we ended up with a lot of the same aesthetic. Come down to visit sometime and I’ll give you a tour! (And maybe we can finally get around to that collaboration video. Or just beer? 🍻)

The seam-hiding beams look just fine and the lighting turned out great. It seems that drywall seams are an issue for everyone everywhere. Question - how is noise in the house? I've fully insulated floors and ceilings and my boys + my 20lb cat still sound like a herd of buffalo when running through the house. Also, (totally unrelated) how is your wifi signal? Do you need lots of repeaters or separate wifi points?

Ingenious solution hiding the seams. A few more remodels and you’ll be a master at plastering. Room looks great, only thing that spoils it is the wire running down the wall from the light above the chair. Running the exposed beams certainly adds character and is in context with the theme. Great vid and thouroughly interesting!

I have had terrible luck at mudding and plastering so I think your work and problem-solving has had very good results. Well done.

Wow! Looks great! One of my favorite this about living in old houses is making a space work for you out of something that already exists. I always share your videos with my family and friends because I think that there is so much amazing work you put into your home and videos!

Ha ha, I grabbed that one quickly. Is there a koi pond? Will have to show the mrs what it might look like.
