    Note:
Botulism is not directly found in canned or processed foods, if not preserved correctly the food becomes a breeding ground for bacteria, including Clostridium Botulinum. This bacteria produces the toxin associated with botulism when it enters you body.

Fun fact: when I was in college, I was in the physics lab store room and found a volumetric flask filled with mercury. My prof said that it was enough to poison the entire water supply of the state of Texas. There was at least two of them. It was more than somewhat disconcerting.
I do wonder what happened to them when they later refurbished the science building.

Fun fact: Cyanoacrylate is a type of cyanide (I think) that was found in a lot of over the counter super glues. An extremely effective adhesive, was used in the war to close up wounds. Extremely bad for ones lungs and respiratory system. Most bootmakers (myself included) had repeatded exposure to it, (yes, in modern times) with little to no ventilation or cross flow.

And it's still used. The main danger of this compound is not the cyanide itself but the strong bonds it forms in contact with water. If you inhale it or it gets into your eye.... yeah, very bad times. It's not toxic though... what you get is sort of a physical injury because it forms a hard shell that's glued to the tissue.

    A couple of things:
Strychnine: These "muscle spasms" are so intense they can break your bones. Nasty stuff.
Cyanide: Disables protein in mitochondria that produce energy. This occurs in seconds; essentially irreversibly, and has the effect on our body like running out of oxygen, everywhere, simultaneously. In other words it's like having every muscle cramp, like a stitch in your side, charlie horse, etc, plus the intense pain of a heart attack, and the debilitation of a stroke, all at once. Probably worse than burning yourself alive in terms of pain.
Mercury: The kind in thermometers wont participate in reactions in your cells. You could drink a lot of it. Organic mercury, like you said, is nasty.
Botulism Toxin: There are many nasty toxins produced by the species Clostridium botulinum. They all act by causing the nerve terminals on our muscle cells to over-fire. In other words, once they are introduced to muscle, they cause it to contract without stopping. This is why Botox works! Extremely small amounts are injected, around small muscles, and they cause them to contract which stretches out the skin. That's why someone who has had a lot of botox seems to have their face stuck in a certain expression, often like they are constantly surprised.
Very importantly, C. botulinum is anaerobic, that means it grows without oxygen. We can/jar things to protect the contents from oxygen so it doesn't spoil or grow bacteria which need oxygen. Having no oxygen in the can/jar makes a perfect home for C. botulinum, and that is why we heat them up high enough to kill the initial bacteria. If we dont they multiply, and produce waste gas, as well as their toxins, this causes the cans to puff up, or jars to burst.
IT IS ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL TO KNOW COOKING CANNOT DESTROY THE BOTULISM TOXIN. If you have a can which has puffed up - DO NOT OPEN. Additionally, if you ever feel your face is paralyzed, you should never drive to the hospital. Call 911 immediately and describe the situation. Statistically speaking, almost 1 million to one odds, you're having a stroke. If you are brought in by paramedics and are paralyzed, poisoned or having a stroke you will not have to wait in the waiting room and you will not crash your car on the way!

First off how can cyanide attack cells simultaneously, does it wait for it to spread itself out? Also if I recall correctly it takes a fair amount of cyanide to kill someone. Like more than a spoonful.
Second of all, I've heard conflicting reports on how toxic mercury is, but I had no idea there were multiple types. But how, isn't an element an element unless it's a different isotope?
      Thanks

@@castonyoung7514 the lethal dose of cyanide as potassium cyanide or sodium cyanide is just a few hundred milligrams. Given it's density as a powder this would around the size of a match head, assuming it's pure. Cyanide readily distributes itself in the bloodstream, a lethal dose taken orally would be fatal in minutes after reaching most of the organs in the body.
Mercury as an element is a liquid metal. It is capable of forming covalent bonds and, as such, can form covalent bonds to carbon atoms forming compounds such as Ethyl- and Methyl-mercury. These are very readily accessable by the organs of the body and are highly neurotoxic.

Interesting note: the woman mentioned in the video died of organic mercury poisoning, because her gloves were made of a certain type of material that reacted with the mercury and let it seep through, quickly being absorbed through her skin. If she wore gloves of a different type of material, it might have not seeped through the gloves.

5:29 Karen Elizabeth Wetterhahn (October 16, 1948 - June 8, 1997) was an American professor of chemistry at Dartmouth College, New Hampshire who specialized in toxic metal exposure. She died of mercury poisoning at the age of 48 due to accidental exposure to the organic mercury compound dimethylmercury (Hg(CH3)2). Protective gloves in use at the time of the incident provided insufficient protection, and exposure to only a few drops of the chemical absorbed through the gloves proved to be fatal after less than a year.
She was born in Plattsburg NY, thus making her decidedly American, and not British.
Dimethylmercury, however, made her decidedly dead.

This amount of pure league salt will kill 10 people, one of which is the yasuo himself. This substance is lethal at any amount and cannot be contained in any way. The symptoms are unkown but we do know it will make anyone brain dead within the first seconds. Yasuo players kill thousands of people every day because of their toxicity.
That being said either dont play League or 100% ban Yasuo, especially if someone on your team wants to pick him.

5:58 I have a crazy story about mercury poisoning. When I was a kid I once tried to get out of a school by putting a lighter under a thermometer. The thermometer popped, and the mercury came out. I played with it for a good 15 minutes because I liked how I could split it but it always came back together, and the metallic silver was cool. Nothing ever happened to me, I guess it wasn’t a high enough concentration of it? Not really sure, but now that I know how dangerous it is I make sure my kids never get the same idea.

My mother used to have a castor bean plant growing in her backyard. It was destroyed by a hurricane years ago, but I used to collect the beans in a plastic tube because I thought they looked cool.

When they did the study on the dart frog and the natives said “the effect was so immediate that the bird fell out of the sky right away”, wouldn’t that happen anyways if you hit a bird with a regular arrow?

Pearl Steenstra Not always, sometimes they continue to flap 2-3 times and start falling. It all depends on the arrow.

Not an arrow, a dart. Huge difference.

It is a dart, fatal for brids but they can survive. The poison is probably what kills them.

I used to play with Mercury in the 1966 to 1968. I used my bare finger to push Mercury small drop around to create a bigger lump. I am still alive.

You got mercury and organic murcury mixed up. The scientist in question spilled organic murcury over her hand. It's an important distinction because the element murcury is mostly harmless. Organic murcury is always fatal.

I would not call elemental mercury "mostly harmless" by any stretch... but yes, organic mercury is much more dangerous. Elemental mercury can't kill you just by touching it, but by handling it openly you usually breathe in some fumes and just touching it will add tiny bits of it to your system that will cause minute but real neural damage. Doing this a few times likely won't be noticeable. Doing it every day? Well, there's a reason "Mad Hatter" is a trope (hint: elemental mercury was an ingredient in their process back in the day).
