- I recently purchased a cheap prebuilt computer with a relatively unknown and hard to find CPU inside of it. That was going to be the main focus of the video, but something else quickly grabbed my attention, and from then my main goal was to make this PC more user friendly and compatible with a wider range of hardware.

i3 6098p, now that's one of the weirdest CPU names and that says a lot. A 6700 would do good on this mobo depending on how much you pay for it, can certainly make for a decent budget rig.

6700 would be terrible money/perf unless you land a deal. 6500 for some reason is far more plentiful.

This is one of those instances where you can tell having less cores is the big limiting factor. It's decent, but obviously holding back that 3050 exponentially.

Even the old sandbridge is faster than this cpu .
Its 2 core is really the limit the systeem.
And yes have HT on it
But HT only work if the cpu cores have time to spare .
If not HT will lower the cpu performance.

I remember I stripped a mid tower Dell Optiplex to build my ex her own custom rig. I believe I upgraded the third Gen i3 in the board to an i5, put in 16GB of RAM, a custom RGB CPU cooler, SSD W10 and EVGA GTX 1060 6GB with an upgraded PSU that could handle it. I put it all in a pink case with Overwatch decals lol
Had a couple of pre builds back in the day, one had the heat sync held on with a rubber band.

I gave someone a pc with HDD and power lights replaced with Christmas light bulbs before, also once with a dc motor rigged to the back fan exhaust with a toy plane propeller on it. I can only imagine the electro magnetic fields emanating from that motor couldn't be AT ALL good for it.

You make me want to buy an older machine just for 'experimental purposes', i recently upgraded to an i9-12900k and a more up to date rtx card, currently im using an rtx 3060 12gb.

Except that Windows 11 takes away 8GB of that RAM for all that nice telemetry it has on you even before you do anything else with it - which is actually great for someone like me who uses an "adult's OS" like Linux because I have never seen so many cheap 4GB DDR3 and DDR4 RAM modules on eBay as people rush to double their RAM to 16GB in what are usually two RAM slot machines ready for the upgrade bloat of Windows 11.
Even the heaviest Linux distro only occupies 2GB RAM or so by default - you people really should be asking Microsoft what they are doing with all that additional RAM they are needing these days...
@@Google_Does_Evil_Now for me the biggest upgrade in terms of the 3060 has been being able to max my games out at 2560x1440p and get well above 120 fps permanently with RT on and DLSS, for me its a nice upgrade all around.
I've done a few "it'll do" jobs when screwing stuff in place for testing, but I'd never sell it like that.
As for the machine itself, probably a prime candidate for something like a 1650 as a 1080p non-AAA(well, AAA is doable, but you're not getting 60) machine.
In anything more CPU-intensive than GTA V, the i3 will hold back that 1650.
Then again, there's not much else that you can get brand-new that won't be held back.

If you're not playing any high-end newer games, stick a cheap, but decent GPU in there and you'd be pretty good to go.
If it's up your alley, you could probably fill it with emulators for early 2000s systems(and earlier) but of course, there's cheaper options if you don't just happen to have one laying around.
this video is of particular interest to me cuz I used to shop for used PC's at local thrift stores and scavenge parts to upgrade my system at the time which was built from all used parts starting with an i7 cpu that I got on ebay for 7 dollars ... every one else backed out of the bidding when the seller admitted that the cpu came from water damaged computers from an office fire ... I figured the most I could loose was seven bucks and so was worth the gamble ... I gamed on that for several years ... nowadays I have an AMC Ryzen 7 rig but spent more and used new parts ...but I love to hear of budget rigs built with scrounged parts
I have also done a lot of playing around with the older i3 2 core 4 thread CPUs lately. Mostly in laptops as upgrades for dual core Pentiums. They work... kinda. I'll leave it at that!
It depends on the OS, Mike. I'm still using Core 2 Duo Thinkpad T60 or T61 laptops running at around 2GHz with 4GB RAM (3GB RAM maximum in the T60 due to chipset) and they are perfectly fine daily drivers running Linux - especially with an SSD installed.
With modern Windows, forget it!
@@terrydaktyllus1320 I am only running Win10 and 11 on these laptops. It works well enough, but you are right. Something like Linux is going to be speedier.

I suspect you have to even do a "hack" on Windows 11 for it even to start installing on such old machines? I remember something about that on YT about a year ago?

I still have a laptop with a A8-6410 CPU around that's more or less comparable with a early i3-i5 and boy it's terrible. At least the GPU is vastly better than whatever Intel had on their chips back then. Running a very slim Win10 installation with 8 GB of RAM and an SSD. Boots quickly, and that's about it.

@@Google_Does_Evil_Now yes...and I have one. 4790k and gtx1070...can play modern games still at 60+fps at 1080p. Some games ultra, some high some medium settings. Cheaper than a console since I already own it.

@@Google_Does_Evil_Now But afaik 1151 is not really 6th to 9th gen, i heard its like 1151_v1 for 6th and 7th, and 1151_v2 for 8th and 9th, with basically no interoperability between those two. But im not 100% sure.
@@Tracker5111 I have similar. Used to have i5-2600k with RX 580 8GB then upgraded to i7-9700k with GTX 1080 Ti 11GB ($250), both from eBay. So that's similar to your setup. Both worked well at 1080p.
There are so many kits and GPUs on eBay. It's a great time to upgrade using used parts.
The 12th gen Intel i7 and i9 are so good that people are selling entire i7-9700k and i9-9900k with RAM and motherboard kits on eBay.

You are fine using those adapters, the only ones to be worried a bit more is the molex to 6 and 8 pin, since those can overload some psu rails, and make them trip and shut down the computer or something worse.
A few months ago I was working with an Optiplex 990 and 9020, and I had to buy a replacement board for the latter Haswell based 9020. These Optiplex boards are at least Super Cheap, which is nice if you have one of these cases. The catch is these Optiplex motherboards use proprietary connectors for most everything such as the USB and Power. There are adapters for these boards that will allow the user to connect the board to a regular/aftermarket case, but the adapters are the same price as a used Optiplex motherboard. The Haswell based 9020 also uses a proprietary ATX power connector, so a 24-pin adapter is needed if the power supply is being upgraded.
Core i3-6098p..... i miss the days of Intel using weird and obscure processors such as this. It seemed as if prebuilts with the Core i5-6402p were somewhat common here in the U.S..

The PC I use at work to play games on whenever I am between repair orders is a Dell with a Skylake i5-6500. I put my own SSD on it with Win10, brought the system RAM up to 8gigs of OEM style RAM and put in a Radeon Sapphire HD 7770 1gig variant graphics card that a coworker gave me years ago. That PC plays a lot of games surprisingly well, especially with the older Sapphire in it. Only drawback I can see is the odd DDR3L memory it requires and of course the proprietary nature of the PC itself but it works well in my hidey hole at work.

Do you update the BIOS on the old Motherboards you use to try and bring them more up to date and compatible with "newer" games after the MB was produced? I mostly do when i pick up an older system.
one good thing about lenovo is there are adapters as you found out for cpu/motherboard connectors. i had an 1150 socket version that needed the 24 pin adapter. not a big deal or expense, but it is annoying if its not expected and you have to wait a day or two to get the extra's you need. on a finer note least they have that option unlike hp. ive had a few hp systems before that could easily be upgraded, but i have a am4 based pavilion that uses their own psu units that have 12v only with no upgrade options outside of units specific to those systems. mine came with a 180w 80 gold, but for £20 i managed to find a gaming version that had a intel 1200 board(sadly bent pins) and a 310w 80 gold/platinum which is what i wanted. thankfully this version if the 310w has a 6 + 2 pin. doesnt say pcie, but did run an r9 370 which is a 110w gpu. pre-builts can be interesting to upgrade, see whats possible and what they are capable of.

FWIW I have used those adaptor cables extensively before for months and found they do well and don’t form thermonuclear fusion in the cables - used i7 cpus in Oem boards mainly, limitation was bios support for some cpus
You can try to put so called "i7 6400t". It's a name of engineering samples that been everywhere for a really cheap price. They are ranging usually from 2.0-2.4GHz base, 3.4 GHz turbo. Suggesting it only because of cheap and smaller power consumption for this platform. OEMs doesn't often do the good job for VRM on prebuilds. There might be a bios compatibility issues. Be careful if you are going to stick with it

You got me in the mood of trying to test Cyberpunk on my AMD A6 7400k, I know it starts up and that it has all necessary instruction sets, But when I tried it with just the integrated Radeon it did not fair so well. That cpu isn't even a true dual core more so a single core with two threads. It's 5am now and I'm tired, this will be an interesting project for tomorrow, to see if a GTX 1060-3gb will be enough to drag that pathetic single core into a playable experience. Replaced the cooler a few hours ago when I noticed overclocks were hurting my performance, my suspicions were correct that the dinky cooler was the reason, a hyper 212 evo solved that. runs at 4.5 ghz with the multi core performance of a core 2 duo lol, the single core performance is very impressive though.
Is it possible to upload your config file for your msi afterburner rivatuner settings thing? I can't be assed to make one myself.
I just repinned the 24pin from the standrad psu to 10pin works like a charm. Just need to keep in mind that has more 12v then 24pin has. It is definitely less of a fire hazard.
When I had build a PC for sale a year ago, I was short on one screw for the HDD drive. Three in, one missing and I warned the buyer about it... 😅
Seems who ever made this thing, was the total opposite in that regard
those aren't such a big deal because they are so easy to obtain but missing specialized screws like the long ones that slide through fan holes to attach to a radiator, or proprietary ones to hold hard drives in within rubber grommets etc. can be really really annoying. I could only find 3 of 4 of my rad screws tonight and all I can think of now is that it probably got sucked up by my vacuum cleaner.

my pal had a i3-6098p in his desktop PC he built when the year was 2015. i still remember the name because it was such an odd CPU to own honestly. he gamed on it for years and could still game on it even in 2021 although in mostly esports titles/fighting games/lightweight triple-A titles. he even played RDR2/DAYSGONE on it! he locked the fps to 30 but it was really feasible and playable. he played bf1/bf5 with us on it LOL! the CPU was "the wingman" of our pandemic lockdown adventures. although he started getting more and more stutters every year (especially on fortnite) because games kept getting more and more CPU bound.
i really like the CPU because it allowed us to create fond memories in the past. i have a soft spot in my heart for it! glad you covered it, found it!
If he has a good internet connection he can play (some of) his games on geforce now anyway on a very high fps. If he ever updated windows over the years the system would've probably gotten slower as a result of all the bloat anyway (and graphics drivers no longer being updated or fully compatible)
I had an optiplex 3040 with a 6th gen i5, but it had a proprietary psu form factor, and proprietary motherboard connectors. I ended up just purchasing an atx power supply and just leaving it outside the case as it was too big, and routing the 24 pin with an adapter to the 8 pin motherboard connector and cpu power through where the original power supply would have been.

i have a i3 6100 paired with a RX 580.
First time i builded a Budget pc and felt nice for months. then started playing apex , getting some dips here in there, realized that Game will run smooth if i close every other process like discord or overwolf.
i3 6100 if used for gaming gets really borderline 60fps on decent cards
any user that finds himself struggling with this low end i3's. consider saving some money and sell the mother + i3 so you can buy an i3-10100

You can get an adapter for that 10 pin connector on amazon to use normal power supplies. Had to do this for one I had in the past. Otherwise for what you spent I think you got your monies worth to be honest even if it was old lenovo parts.

I feel like the first 4 minutes were a visit to "The Steve's Gun Show". Not complaining in the least, you can tell you've spent some time recently pulling 24 pin connectors out of motherboards!
I really wish prebuilts were moving away from proprietary parts (looking at you AS USUAL, Dell!), but in my experience, it's sadly just as prevalent now as back in the Pentium 4 era.
7:55 i have a i5 6400 with 2x8gb ram and a gigabyte 1060 6gb, the i5 is actually solid with older games but with GTA V online is always 95 to 100% cpu usage with some stutter that seems like is slowing down even if the game runs at 50-60fps, with COD WWII it is the same story. So for a "cheap" pc it's good but not very good. And they are not as cheap as u would expect.

Maybe check eBay for Sold Prices for yours and these. See if it's worth trying this upgrade.
8 core/threads is supposed to be the minimum needed for gaming because of the consoles using 8 cores or threads.
There's another tech channel and he did a CZcams video about 8 cores/threads being the minimum for future upgrades.
I have 8 core 8 thread i7 9700k and it can average 90% on all cores when I'm gaming. That's with GTX 1080 Ti 11GB ($250 now on eBay).
i7 9700k + 32GB RAM + Motherboard for $300 or less on eBay. All together.
@@Google_Does_Evil_Now i could take an i7 6700 (non k beacause i have a b250-fintech, doesn't support overclock) or an i7 7700 but they go for 120 to 200 here in Italy on ebay, so i think that i'll wait another year maybe and than i'll make a new build maybe with a ryzen 5 or i5.
And yes, my mb is a mining board but was the cheapest 4 years ago when my h110m-s2h stopped working, i bought it for 40€ brand new from Amazon.
Odd for someone to recase a branded pc. But i did scrap some older than this Lenovo Pc's during lockdown because i wanted the cpu's to upgrade a couple of my "working from home machines", and it was cheaper to buy some used complete pcs than the used cpu's. I sold the custom motherboards on that well known site with the ATX power adapters and audio converters. I got the upgrade i wanted, some others got a cheap Motherboard/CPU combo that would fit in an atx case, and less weee was produced!

How about checking out a unlocked i3 7350k and seeing if they are up to much on 2022?
Many years ago I've got an i3 6098p based PC and I can say that together with its Intel HD 510 iGPU it still works great for office stuff. Its single thread performance is better than an i5 4460's. Also, the temperatures are quite impressive with the stock Intel cooler.

Have a look at that back HDD screw @ 2:29. It looks a little sideways... wonder if that was cross-threaded? This must have been the last PC of the day on a Friday or something, what with the one screw holding in the motherboard, the cable management and overall look of things in there. Yikes.
Have you ever purchased one of the beautiful custom jobs and found the case contained, basically, a laptop motherboard and internals?
I found an extra newer Samsung 256gb SSD surprise in the last used build I bought. It was wedged in the back panel. The build came from a 3D graphics company and I think their tech guy was switching users over and just left it in there after he swapped drives.
I've got so many old 6th / 7th Gen parts lying around... Even got a DDR3 board as these CPU's were compatible with both DDR3 and DDR4. Got several Pentiums of that generation too. As well as i5 and i7 stuff just never got around to selling it all 😒
I had to look up the CPU to understand why it was so much usage on the games. Due to the fact 3.6Ghz is really decent and I can stuff on that. But I realized it was only Dual core with 4 channels. So yeah, the bottle-necking was bad. I in the past as well had to use adapters for more to less and less to more pin connectors as well. Sometimes companies are just @$$holes with proprietary stuff.
my dad had a prebuilt he wanted to put a 2060 in. he had moved the internals into a different case similar to this, though everything was help down much better, and when I went to help him upgrade I noticed the PSU didn't have the gpu cable, so he went to best buy and then we went to set it up and I noticed the mobo pin was different. gotta love Lenovo's proprietary crap. for a while before I helped him build an all new ryzen build he had an adapter cable from amazon, though the first 2 days he was rocking a second psu just for the gpu.
The 10pin is essentially an early version of 12v psu spec , the board probably has power going from it to the drives
Yeah. Just realized that 10-pin connector only has 12V supply only. The motherboard will do the rest.
I'm assuming we are going to see you get an i7 6700k, they pair well with the new lower end 30 series cards. Do you have a 3060 ti? Try overclocking (don't think you can with this board) an i7 6700k and see if it can bridge the gap to a newer cpu?
i used those types of power suppler adapters for years with no issues.
Makes me feel a lot better about the thin client 6500t I mounted in the trunk of my car.
The fact that you managed to get this for the price you did is a great surprise in itself. Personally I would keep it as a basic office PC, possibly just upgrading the 320GB HDD to an SSD and adding in a 1TB HDD for data storage. Even a 128GB + 500GB would work, or (at a push), the 128GB + 320GB. I just think this would benefit from an SSD, and possibly a low power GPU if you wanted some casual gaming (to avoid the adapter, and to avoid having to upgrade to an i5/i7).

i have an i5-6400 i have wanted to put to use but i dont have an 1151 board so i have to look if i can fine one resonable priced second handed within Europe, so i dont need to pay import fees
Best way to deal with this PC: remove/unattach the parts you want to keep, take out Lenovo motherboard, sell on eBay, replace with regular h110 or b250 motherboard (h110 should set you back between £30 and £40, b250 a bit more) with a regular 24-pin power connector, a decent budget PSU like a Be Quiet! System Power 9 600W and a better CPU cooler. 6th Gen i5s can be had for a bargain now so no need to keep that i3 (I found an i5-6500 for £35 so they are out there) and pairing that with something like an RX470 would give you a nice little eSports gaming PC.

I recently got a good deal on a pc. Ryzen 3400g, 8gb ram, M.2 ssd 256gb, 500gb sata ssd. Plus a Logitech 703g Lightspeed. For 100€. Sadly it was a prebuild HP mainboard with Lga cooler mounting on am4 socket. Replaced the Board and psu. It is pretty nice
i know you were looking for a skylake mobo, but wouldn't this one limits your cpu and memory clocks when using an unlocked processor? i know this OEM bios are very limited in terms of customization, mate, and i guess you'll end up frustrated. keep up the amazing work, greetings from brazil!

Love most of your content however im a little confused as to the conclusion that this PSU is problematic with a 3050? Even with an i7 6700, RTX 3050, HDD, SSD, 2x Case Fans, 2x USB Devices and keyboard / mouse attached the load wattage is around 280w. Given that a 400w Platinum PSU should be 90%+ efficiency it would run fine. All you would need is a 6 pin to 8pin adapter?
The efficiency hasn't anything to do with the PSU's output.
@@Keullo-eFIN it's a 400w PSU that's at least 90% efficient. So it's output is 360w minimum.
not a really badly specced machine, but I might as well have thrown it out rather than build it like that. that it survived shipping was a miracle NEVER mount a board with just one screw...

Hey man I bought what I thought was a RX 580 from Cex today. Soon as I got home to put it in my system I find out its a RX 470. They had it listed as a RX 580 so it just proves they dont test GPUs. Now to fight them for rather the right card or my money back

10 pins are enough for a low power machine. each wire can only handle so much wattage before they get too hot to function as wires. a second wire splits the load. these machines are just so low spec that you simply dont need a full 24 pin connector. the mobo also probibly isnt using all the voltage rails and so can omit those. the margins on system integration are hair thin that if you can omit a few grams of copper from the machine they can improve the bottom line.
the fact that cyberpunk ran at all with this cpu impressed me.

I wonder how much does people really take Windows 11 (TPM) support in their consideration when buying a used (gaming) PC/laptop?
I'm bit in a dilemma because I'm looking to sell all my 2 Kaby Lake gaming laptop (one with 4gb of GTX 1050 and one with 6GB of GTX 1060) and 1 Skylake gaming laptop (3GB of GTX 1060) to buy a AMD Ryzen 7000 series PC (perhaps with RX 7800XT) when it comes out. And I can't decide the price how much to sell it given the fact all 3 does not support Windows 11 officially.
You can put a 760 or 950 6pin plug so are able to put more cards in than you think
As someone who works in a repair shop the big vendors (HP, Dell, Lenovo) prebuild systems have been getting worse and worse for proprietary designs to skimp the pennies off their costs to the point where they can't be upgraded at all due to lack of mother board & PSU connections (let alone the presence of standard connectors!) or repurposed. Aweful!
The i3 u use is a skylake cpu .
So all skylake will work on that board if the bios update van handel it.
Iets oem bord you have and it can be limit by manufactur that only cpu works what is sell with that board .
I bought an i7 Asus prebuilt built back in 2016 came with the HDD held in with only one screw and other loose parts. Worked fine but I had to remedy that.
What would be a valid reason to rebuild the hardware from a Lenovo case to a generic one?
Usually you buy brandname PCs for their case and build design and perhaps tested stable hardware config.

Maybe the original case was a low profile one and the user needed to add a card that wasn't available as such.
I found non-working build with i7-6700k, RX570 4gb, MSI z170a krait edition mobo, 12 gb RAM and all in the NZXT S340 case it was for just 150 usd so i bought it, repared it for no money (just install new cooler, i had one in home) i had a great PC for the money, but after 1 month GPU died... so i bought used RX480 8gb now PC work fine, CPU is kinda old now but it is still decent
I have an Acer like that which won't accept any other RAM at all XD
I am wary of even putting a new CPU in it as it might be locked into whatever it came with somehow(?!) IDK...
But I put my old no power connector needed RX560 in it and I can play some more modern titles on it without even turning down the quality much, but I can tolerate a lower framerate.
