- How to choose a windlass. Or, what windlass should we buy to replace our mangled mess at the front of the boat? There's some technical boat maintenance stuff in this episode but there's also some rather splendid drone footage of the beautiful tropical island that is Langakwi. Be well, good luck working with the new anchor windless, been there done that... we had an old school monster of a dual head windless for our 64' ketch, had to hand-over-hand her more than once, better to sail off the anchor,, let the big high torque motor do it's job mate, yup! Be well.
the Ketch was really quiet handy if the breeze direction and sail plan (mizzen) were thought out first, she didn't like close hauled but both "far-and-away" she handled nicely, heavy, deep full keel, (lot of weight to shift in tight quarters) had to think about where you pointed her bows when you needed to get to the ball or main set...
I really like the music jingle throughout this clip and the interesting video cutting work. Awesome! ;-)
Beside that, I absolutely appreciate all your in-depth "decision charts" you're presenting in each episode where new/replacement equipment has to be chosen. Precious information and thoughts.

Interestingly, I followed the same decision making process to replace the SL 555 windlass on CARIAD, our 1978 Rival 41C and came to the same conclusion, purchasing the Lofrans Tigress. I live mostly in the US, where CARIAD is currently located, and live part time in the UK (Surrey). I discovered that I would save over $800 purchasing the windlass in the UK and taking it back to the US as luggage, but encountered the same reality that the windlass exceed the single luggage limit on Delta Airlines. Taking the wildcat and capstan off and packing them, along with the accessories, in my carry-on luggage solved the problem. Delta Airlines allowed me two bags / parcels of checked luggage and US customs did not charge an import tariff, so I was way ahead of purchasing the Tigress in the US. I did have to pay UK VAT, which I could possibly have avoided if I picked the windlass up at the store in the UK and filled out the necessary paperwork. The windlass has been in operation now for five years and works beautifully, hauling up 3/8" (10mm) chain connected to a 20 kilo Rocna anchor.

razzorbladz I was thinking the same thing. the handle weighs a pound, the seals weigh a pound…with all the little bits out you can't be that far away from the magic number.

An oldie but a goldie. YT decided I wanted to watch this probably because we did our Lofrans windlass recently. I did not realise you guys had a Tigres. We have the slightly smaller Cayman model. It was interesting seeing an episode from my pre-boat days 😀 Thankfully we do not need an alternator...

Good choice of windlass, I have one and they are bulletproof. The only problem is if you ever decide to change the Gypsy size, the after market ones are poorly made and dont fit well.

Rebuilding alternators yourself is very "do-able" if you have the parts ! The most common failures are the voltage regulator (may or may not be built into the alternator), the diodes, the brushes, the slip rings and the bearings. The rotor (w/windings) and the stator (windings) almost never fail. The most difficult job is replacing the slip rings, but those do last a very long time (> 200,000 km on an automobile). All alternators are very similar on the inside,
Starters have more moving parts so more to wear out. The brushes and the commutator are the most common wear item. If the commutator is worn (unusual) you would need a new rotor and brushes. The "solenoid" (what engages the motor into the flywheel) is also a common failure point, but there are several different designs. The solenoid may contain the high amperage switch contacts (or they may be separate). Sometimes these switch contacts become dirty and just need a good cleaning/polishing with fine emery cloth.
Thanks for that, wiz. Some useful info there, appreciate the comment. We've had worn out starters in the past but the alternator scares me. If I had more time I'd spend a morning with Mr Sin and learn from him.
Not sure what kind of alternator and starter your new "bee-ta" engine uses, but that info would be good to look up and write down. You should get many, MANY years of use out of both. If you are a person who tends to carry a lot of "spares", buy a set of brushes and a regulator for the alternator. Brushes and a solenoid would be useful spares for the starter. (If i were a long distance cruiser like yourself, I would have TONS of spare parts and LOTS of tools.)
I am certain that "servicing" the winch will be on you list of things-to-do during your next major haul out/refit !

Probably not worth the time, but likely a lot less cost, a good machine shop could make a new worm and gear for you old windlass. Of course, you would still need new bearings and seals and you would still have to have a new deck plate made.
Hopefully the new windlass won't interfere with any other lines/fittings.
We'll keep you posted because I'm planning to install it today.

That windlass is HUGE. it reminds me of the winches we use in commercial electrical work to pull large wires through conduit (we call them chuggers) My little baby lewmar 700 windlass is dwarfed by it. How large is the anchor on Esper? I'm hoping now that our new 45lb anchor isn't going to be too much for our existing windlass.

That's a big anchor. It's so true that a bigger boat needs a bigger anchor and a bigger windlass to handle it. Could you guys even hoist that anchor by hand if you had to? Was Jamie stuck at the anchorage until he ot the windlass fixed?
I think I could probably just barely raise our 45lb Mantus if it were broken free from the bottom. It'd be a struggle with the 8mm chain though. I checked and our windlass is apparently the H1000 ,not the H700 that I thought it was, since it has a 8mm gypsy -unless the previous owners somehow got them to put an oversized gypsy onto the H700.
One nice thing is that Lewmar designed the windlass to have a manual mode so you can operate it with a 1/2" socket wrench. Since it is a horizontal model even if the gears and motor are totally knackered it will still operate with that socket handle stuck in the side.
+SV Barry Duckworth [Liz] We've hoisted it together by hand before now, and Jamie had a couple of friends to help him this time. When you're bringing up 40m of 10mm chain with a big lump of metal on the end, it can be pretty hard work!

Regards to your Mum! We're thinking of getting a windlass. Manual though. Simply a winch with teeth to grab the chain would be cool. Don't know why they don't make more of those these days for us youngins who still have our backs.
Good on you. I don't want to sound like your mum nagging but please do watch that back. I have a slipped disk and it can be debilitating and painful (not to mention depressing). I think it was caused by over-exertion on the boat, among other things, and this happened in my early 40s. Nagging over, fair winds to you!

How exciting - about the new windlass and with a cleat on top too!👍 I am sure you will take care installing the winch - (pre-drill mounting holes larger fill with epoxy and then drill through with smaller correct size, also need a decent sized backing plate to spread the load to deck structure). On a lighter note, I laughed so hard: deck template on CD, instead of sending a ruddy piece of paper with. How many boats have a printer on board (I believe I saw one in the Boffice, but you are exceptional)? Just wreaks of customer disconnect. I imagine there's a manual on the CD as well, so not saying the CD is superfluous, but still…for the extra 10¢ it'll cost you, send the darned piece of paper.
We got rid of our printer only recently, Wilfred, so we are now printerless. Instead I had to get the manual printed out at the marina office (at great expense) and go in to town (20k away) to get the A3 template done. Bit annoying. Sorry to hear about your dad. Hope he's as comfortable as possible. Fair winds to you.
followtheboat I would have just copied the manual to a couple different devices and skipped printing it (space on the boat, cost, etc), probably would have just traced the windlass bottom to some cardboard, on the bet that when it got printed the scale would be off anyways. But admittedly I'm very cheap, pinching pennies (hard enough to make the queen scream, as they say) for my next boat: Why was printing the manual a concern when you have laptops and iPads you could work off of?

Just curious why you had a vertical shaft windlass. Horizontal would seem to shield salt and sand from the bearings and shaft far better.

+Greg Jones [Liz] I wish I had something useful to tell you, but each year is so very different it's impossible to put a figure on it. Our best answer is to give yourself a budget and try to live within it (something we fail at miserably). Some cruisers have a lot more to spend than others, and are able to eat out most nights, stay in swanky marinas, take lots of trips inland or 'home' and buy new bits for their boat whenever they like. Most of us have a small budget which means eating on board, seldom staying in marinas and hammering the elastic credit card to buy boat parts!

Really! I sailed across the Tasman four years ago from NZ with our terrier whom had a dog passport and vet check, this is allowed between both countries, as it was not on a commercial flight, they wanted to deport her back to NZ or quarantine! My argument was she is returning home after all she was an Australian Terrier, bless her.

I was pretty sure they would say no, but the authorities on Cocos got in touch with the bureaucrats in Streya who deemed it OK for Millie to visit. We've usually found it works best in some countries to get this sort of things sorted out before you get there, then you can give them email/documentary evidence. Fair winds!
