  • Finrod is one of Galadriel's three siblings and one of the greatest elf lords of the First Age. He is known as the King of Nargothrond and a great friend of the men of Middle-earth. Today, we will cover his entire life and his complete travels from his birth in Valinor to his death when he saves Beren from a werewolf. His journey doesn't stop there, however. Finrod is one of the few Tolkien characters we will follow into the afterlife!

I always thought it was so tragic how the turning point in the magic song battle, when Sauron began to defeat Finrod, was the First Kinslaying. Finrod was drawing strength from Valinor and good things in the world, and Sauron used not just a terrible thing, but a terrible deed the Elves had done, to strengthen the side of evil. It's as if to say, evil in the world is one thing, but it's the evil within his own people, the act that stained the holy land where Finrod is drawing his strength from, that is his weakness. Even despite the fact that Finrod himself was likely totally innocent. So even poor Finrod, innocent and possibly the kindest, most benevolent, most loyal of all the princes, was caught up in the far-reaching consequences of what Feanor did, and it was to some extent his downfall. He's trapped in the Doom of Mandos, and it makes me so sad.

Finrod is my favourite character among all of the characters in Tolkien's universe. He lost everything and yet he never got angry for this. He had to leave his lover, see the deaths of his brothers, his human friends, and he gave his crown to Orodreth when he saw his people's betrayal (and he wasn't even angry at them) in order to keep his promise to his dead friend Barahir. And he did everything to protect that stupid Beren, no matter what. He sacrificed himself.
He was strong, wise, and fair. I get really sad, thinking that he was born in Valinor, under the lights of the trees, right in the middle of the heaven, and yet he died in a dark hole fighting a werewolf with his bare and chained hands, right in the middle of the hell...

Without the friendship between Elves and Men there would be no Earendil, no Elwing. If you read Silmarilion carefuly (which I assume - you have), you realise that not many Elven princes in Beleriand would be as gracious towards Men as Finrod. _Then the gloom gathered. Darkness growing,_
_In Valinor, the red blood flowing,_
_Beside the sea, where Noldor slew_
    _The foamriders, and stealing drew._
_Their white ships. With their white sails._
*_From lamplit havens, the wind wails._*
*_The wholf howls, the ravens flee!_*
*_The ice mutters in the mouth of the sea!_*
-The Silmarillion, "The battle of Sauron and Finrod Felagund"
For context: they had a duel in songs of power. At first, Sauron wanted to reveal all about Finrod, but he sang a song of protection and succesfully deflected his attack. Now the Dark Lord knew what a a powerful foe he had in front of him and started mainly defending, rarely taking any offensive actions, waiting for the right moment. And the moment came. Finrod mentioned the beauty of Valinor, and Sauron instantly destroyed him by singing about the kingslaying. Yes, they literally had a rap battle.

I love that Tolkien uses art (such as song or poetry) as the vehicle of power or magic. Eru created the universe with song, the Ainur created Middle Earth with song. And here, Sauron and Finrod battle each other not with spells, but with songs and tales.
I always thought, since first reading the battle between Sauron and Finrod, that Finrod would have won. Sauron sings of darkness, violence, and treachery. Finrod sang about light, freedom, friendship, and beauty. But it was only when Sauron sang of the treachery of the Noldor, the slaying of the foamriders. Finrod didn't have an answer for that, feeling the sin of his people.
I always thought that's how Sauron won.

It's still a mystery to me how mere guests to a king of his own realm (which arguably was exactly what the sons of Fëanor were at that time in Nargathrond) manage to convince the subjects of that same king to effectively ghost him. I mean, they were technically closer in the line of succession to the Noldorian high throne but how is that even relevant. I mean, Finrod BUILT damn Nargathrond ...

Celegorm and Curufin were probably saying something along the lines of it being madness that people should die for the "selfishness" of Beren's love, or that Beren is not requesting aid for his people, like supplies or warriors, but instead he is asking the king and others to die in a suicide mission.

The most heroic of all Elves during the First Age, and maybe of all time, in my opinion. And after all the sacrifices he made, including his own due to his valour, love and loyalty to his friends, he won being reunited with his father and his bride.

Finrod Felagund & Beleg Cuthalion are by far my favorite elves.
For me, they captured every aspect of selfless elfinesse. Mastery of their crafts, paramount roles in their age, and but those who supported lesser heroes to sum it all up. So humble.
The song between Sauron and Finrod… why can’t we have literature like this now?
I am more touched by Tolkien’s messages in this part of the tale alone, than any religious book that has ever been presented to me. Truly, as all are anthropogenically originated anyway, as fine a person as Tolkien and his influences to make a masterpiece in my time; I am so privileged.
Thanks Nerd of the Rings. For some it’s just some movies, for some it’s solace from reality, for me it’s as precious as the Iliad for all the wisdom, life lessons, relationship advice, confidence boosting, purpose making spirit that Tolkien left in it.
