- One of the oldest elves ever to roam Middle-earth, Círdan the Shipwright is also one of the wisest. Despite his greatest desire to see Valinor, his fate would be to help others make the trip before he would finally sail in the Last Ship himself.
He would see both Morgoth and Sauron rise and fall, and rise again. His incredible foresight leads him to gift his Ring of Power, Narya, to Gandalf.

You do fantastic videos! I’ve been waiting for a detailed one over The Fall of Gondolin ever since you created ones over The Children of Hurin & Beren and Luthien. We need you to finish Tolkien’s original trilogy!!
Thandruil went in the last boat too... " two elf kings"...
Thanks but I am not interested in the words of a Neo-Nazi.
@@alexandermayr7 Not sure what you mean by that unless you mean that he's not afraid to stand up to the enemies of Western civilization.
o/ Where is the map of Beleriand you use at 1.00 from? It's beautiful!
Cirdan is the unsung hero of the elves and really of Middle Earth. The elf was just constantly in the background holding it all together while forever longing to be home.
Yes
Most underated mvp
For real. I imagine everyone coming to him for advice while he’s like sanding his boat and he’s just like, “look, man, I’m just trying to get home.”
Pretty amazing that he's been doing the same business for so long, even after Beleriand gets wiped out he just moves inland and sets up a new harbor at the Grey Havens, and keeps building his ships for the next 7,000+ years.

As useful as Elrond or Glorfindel, but he never got the love #TeleriLife
Valar upon seeing Cirdan arriving on their shores, "Who are you? How did you get here?"
"I'm Shipwright, and I'm a shipwright."
@Legal Inuman Sessions I think every elf that had ever heard of him would vouch for him, and that Ingwe, and even Ulmo and perhaps the other Valar would revere him.
Police squad reference right?
Underrated comment
Cirdan is the Glorfindel of non-fighting.
Fr
Couldn't have said it any better
Cirdan raised both Gil-galad and Earendil ,so I imagine him as a tired grandpa of the elves
A good example to us all of keeping on keeping on with doing it right himself in spite of other people being stupid/bad/silly. I see him as wise and patient rather than tired but definitely the wise old Uncle/Grandpa. Still giving good advice whether people took it or not :-)
Wise to the end
Imagine how old he had to be, for the description to say he looks old and have a long white beard as almost no elves are known to have grown beards or look old. Fascinating character.
When ten thousand years old you reach, look as good you will not, hmm?
He’s by far the oldest elf left in middle earth by the time of lotr
@@benc.5558 Good one
He's at least as old as Galadrial, if not older
@@HeartlessRandomguy Galadriel is way younger

Right. This dude been in nearly EVERY story of EVERY age, like Galadriel. That’s what’s up.
Dude is even older than Galadriel
@@kris6038 He's probably one of the oldest non Ainur creatures in Middle Earth during LOTR, aside from Treebeard, maybe a few other Ents and whatever Tom Bombadil is.
@@anatoldenevers237 Thats a fair assessment. He was either born or awoke in Cuivíen after all, meaning he was one of the very first elves to enter the world and might even have conversed with Treebeard that told Merry and Pippin about the time when the Elves taught the trees to speak, recalling how they wanted to talk to everything.
When you realise Cirdan is older than Galadriel😲.
Cirdan is one of the most underrated and interesting character in the legendarium.
He's in fact older than Galadriel's dad...
He is one of the first to awaken. That’s as old as it gets.
@@louisbrown4620 yet still young to tom bombadil. He was walking around before the first acorn. I wonder how old he is
@@matthewbuchheim35Well Tom Bombadil is just straight up ancient,he is on his own list
One of the most mind blowing characters of the lore. Thats for sure.
Círdan is my favorite, so glad he got his own video. Such a good example of selfless service and humility. I mean, he gave is ring of power to Gandalf because he knew he needed it more. What a stud.
Imagine giving the ring of fire to one who loves the waters 😐
That is so, but also he gave the ring of fire to a worthy person because he really did not need it. The ring of fire was made to amplify destructive powers and to aid in combat. Cirdan was a shib builder and an architect. He was a great creator and had no use for a destructive tool. Now, if they had given him the ring of water...well, he might have kept that one. :)
The eternal witness to Tolkien’s story. From the silmarillion to the lord of the rings.
Cirdan is a great example of: "Good things come to those who wait"
Wow!!!
But how
Cirdan was the ultimate badass. He even grew a beard, not many elves can match that.
_"It's the beards"_ - Aragon
Cirdan the shipwright

You have a lime from me too
"Take this ring, Master... for your labours will be heavy; but it will support you in the weariness that you have taken upon yourself. For this is the Ring of Fire, and with it you may rekindle hearts in a world that grows chill. But as for me, my heart is with the Sea, and I will dwell by the grey shores until the last ship sails. I will await you." -- Cirdan, Appendix B
Sounds like an npc guiding the players thru their quest
Círdan was lowkey my favourite elf when I was young because he was just chill all the time whilst carrying possbily one of the heaviest burdens any character endured. Cheers to this guy for living 70 milennia and not giving a damn about his own interests, instead helping others achieve theirs.
In The Adventures of Tom Bombadil Tom sees the last ship leave Middle-Earth and he sees 3 Elven kings. So that's Celeborn and Cirdan and the 3rd must have been Thranduil. It's interesting to think about those three leaving together.
Would've been a sad sight but cirdan a much deserved reward

Ah, Círdan the shipwright, probably one of the most underrated characters, especially for those who've only seen the films. Great video as always. ❤
he's actually have a cameo in Pj's film, he appears very briefly in prologue and the ending in Grey Havens.
I think most Tolkein fans have gotten used to the idea of Elves living for "a long-ass time". But realizing that by the time Cirdan left over the Sea he was 11,534 Years of the Sun old is just mind boggling. I also don't often think of Elves as growing old, but Cirdan clearly got close.
The oldest elf that remained in middle earth. Lol

"Caught in an enchantment of their own making for 200 years" just sounds like Tolkien's way of saying they were getting it on for two centuries.

Legolas Greenleaf: I'm the bro-est Elf bro.
Shipwright the Cirdan: ...Hold my boat.
And as the Last Ship sailed on beyond the bent waters of the world, the mists began to part in welcome, for it bore at its helm one who had dreamt of sailing this course--dreamt when it had not been the only Straight Road. Cirdan, ancient and grey, beheld the white shores of Tol Eressea, which he had twice before seen depart without him, and his eyes glittered with unshed tears.
"Eldest," murmured his companion, though he as well could barely speak for the sight, "is it bitter, I wonder, to at last have one's dream come so easily after so long a wanting?"
"Bitter? Bitter, no, except perhaps in such a fashion as bitterness leavens the sweet to ease its coming." And now the old elf's eyes glittered with mirth as well as tears, and a smile cracked his bearded face. "For I alone among the Eldalie have known the depths of hunger to know true satiety, the deepest thirst to know the quenching. O! I will see Elwe again! May he look upon me and see my beard, and think me a wizened invalid thou brought to serve you wine on this long voyage!" And his laughter rang out like a great bell of brass, its clapper long muffled and kept from sounding.
Celeborn himself could naught but smile, for as he looked upon the Eldest of the Elves in Middle-Earth, he knew that none would mistake him for any but who he was. The flame of Cirdan's spirit, undimmed since Elder Days and which had burned brightly beside a Ring of Power, shone forth from him in his rejoicing, and in answer the bells of Tol Eressea sounded in welcome--for their brother long afield had at last returned to the Undying Lands.
Did you write this or pull it from somewhere? Good either way.
Cirdan is maybe the most patient elf in all of tolkiens work and one of the most faithful also. Like who can wait 10,000 years or 70,000 years in a place and where he helps future heroes in battles against the dark lords and also help all the people in the story to sail to the western sea. What a true legend.
Yo this dude really needs to get props for his pronunciation of everything. It sounds so perfect and brings out the beauty in the language and is no easy thing to pronounce so eloquently.
BRAVO! You synthesize the Silmarillion in a way that makes Tolkien's vast mythology accessible to those of us without the patience to put it all together the way you do. Thank you!

👌👌👌
In terms of him being "Shipwright the Shipwright," there's at least one other character referred to this way. Legolas Greenleaf means "Greenleaf Greenleaf." Maybe Elves occasionally took the translation of their names as an epithet or title when conversing with other races in the Common Speech. It would convey the meaning and the person's identity to those who don't speak Elvish.
yo, these are Elvish versions of "Moon Moon."
“What a pity that Bilbo did not stab that vile creature, when he had a chance!” - Frodo
“Pity? It was Pity that stayed his hand. Pity, and Mercy: not to strike without need. And he has been well rewarded, Frodo. Be sure that he took so little hurt from the evil, and escaped in the end, because he began his ownership of the Ring so. With Pity.” -Gandalf
At least someone cares for the old books 👍🏻
in the movies, he says something similer but a bit differently
I love how much effort my man puts into the pronunciations of various Sindarin or Black Speech words. Really shows how much a scholar of Tolkien he is - and how into the subject matter he is.
Cirdan enabled the Elven diaspora from Middle Earth, he helped to build the last Elven safe havens in the late First Age (of the Sun) when Morgoth's armies were running amok in Beleriand, he built the Gray Havens, he redirected the first Numenorian Army in the Second Age when Sauron threatened to take over all of Eriador and the north-west of Middle Earth and thus saved Gil-Galad's people from Sauron, he also gave Gandalf the Elven Ring of Fire which helped ensure Gandalf's mission became a success.
And above all else he suffered sea-longing for tens of thousands years, he watched hundreds of thousands of Elves leave Middle Earth while he stayed behind and he STILL made sure to provide the last ever boat to set sail to Valinor and ONLY then did he at last sail to the undying lands. He was there from the beginning of his race and was there when Elves left Middle Earth entirely. Legend!
One of Tolkien's best characters, no doubt ♥️
One channel to rule them all
One channel to find the fans

In the land on Middle-Earth where the true lore lies
Cirdan was an elf's elf! A whole saga could be made just of this great elf!
The very same generation with those Finwë, Elwë, Ingwë. This elven-granpa taking care of those elven-brat until the end of time. Respect!
True sigma chad of Legendarium. He just stood by the side, doing his deeds, and yet his impact is incalculable.
Wow
Had no idea he endured and had been denied so much over the years
Tears would have been the least of his acts of relief upon seeing the light
Whenever I see these histories of Elves or other very long lived beings I think "boy they had a lot of down time". Despite all the wars and travels you are probably looking at 90% or more of his life just hanging out, working on his ships, and generally doing elf stuff with the occasional big event occurring.
The day TomDaBombadil19 isn’t on the Patreon credits is the day this channel truly days. The mad lad has become iconic at the end of these vids 😂 I always wait to hear our favorite boi mentioned at the end despite me knowing absolutely nothing about the patron!
It's amazing how every last character in Lord of the Rings has his own detailed backstory
"No homies get left behind" - Cirdan probably
Cirdan is an under appreciates character! Made it through so many ages and wars, he does not get enough love, i hope that changes with the new LOTR prime show.
Nerd, this story brought tears to my eyes. You not only know your ME history, but you tell it as though you were there. That touches the heart. Namarie.
Given that Cirdan was bearded and old, it might be said the weight of Middle Earth ultimately ages everyone.
All Elves age. Tolkien even wrote an essay explaining how and why the elves age called “Ageing of Elves”.
I’ve been recovering from eye surgery and while I temporarily have no depth perception, I’ve been binge watching your channel. I’ve read the Hobbit and LOTR trilogy, but never made it through the Silmarillion. So it’s nice to get these little snippets you put together from that, the unfinished tales and Christopher Tolkien’s. It really expands the world and creates amazing depth. Thanks and cheers.
Thanks so much for watching! So glad you are enjoying the channel and I wish you a speedy recovery from your surgery!
So cirdan is an :
An accidental hero or Merlin
Círdan, I feel like is one of those completely underrated characters in the legendarium. Also its so interesting to know that Círdan had a notion to know who the Istari were when they arrived to ME, I can’t remember though if he was the one who told Elrond and Galadriel or if the other 2 elves figured it out themselves. I would love to see a video on Aldarion eventually 👀 ☺️ This was another amazing video my friend!
Truly one of the greatest elves, because he exemplified the true purpose and nature of the Eldar.

Happy to see my fan art listed, this is the happy moment of making fan art.
Cirdan guided others to a treasure he could not posess himself.
I tried to save the Shire, and it has been saved, but not for me. It must often be so, Sam, when things are in danger: someone has to give them up, lose them, so that others may keep them.
As someone, who hasn't read the books, I wonder how there didn't seem to be any animosity or a sense of betrayal between Celebor and Galadriel, since the latter more or less "abandoned" the former for the time being, when she boarded the ship without him... Do you think there was a mutual understanding, that they'd someday meet again in Valinor, when the time was right and it's just a "mortal-thing" to think otherwise? ;)
Also, brilliant, or shall I say "mithril-like" content, I love how you make one feel as if you were talking about real ancient history, looking forward to the next one
Tolkien wrote that for the Elves it was normal for the husband and wife to spend even long periods of time separatedly, as they pursued their own goals. Galadriel and Celeborn lived apart already earlier, in the Second Age. So when Galadriel chose to pass over the Sea before Celeborn did, from the Elvish point of view that would be normal and acceptable. That said, you can hear from Celeborn's words to Aragorn in RotK that he is saddened by Galadriel leaving already, as it would be a while until they would see again.
This is so poetic and beautiful
