      Depp is a great supporting actor. In lead roles he has the Mars Bar effect. A Mars bar is delicious, caramel chewy. Brilliant. Eat nothing but Mars Bars for 90 minutes and it gets tiresome. Johnny is a Mars bar. Have him as the side character who draws you in, but not a lead. Pirates of the Caribbean for example. Vs say Sleepy Hollow or Dark Shadows.
      I love Johnny, we all do, but he's a Han Solo to Luke Skywalker. The show's about Luke. Han kinda elevates it. I mean imagine if they made a movie about Han Solo. Heh. It'd be crazy and shit right...

    • @joegrimes9232
      @joegrimes9232 Před 4 lety +6

      Johnny is a charcter actor. He does lampoon well. As a lead outside that context? It falls flat. He'd play well in a Thor movie against Chris Hemsworth for example. But leading the film? No. Sweeny Todd, Charlie and the Chocolate factory, the aforementioned Dark Shadows? No. He led Ed Wood well, but he had an ensamble cast that made it work. Johnny is definitely support. If they did another biopic of a band, Johnny is the enigmatic bassist, not the frontman.

      So his savvy line here weirdly predates Jack Sparrow’s catchphrase. Depp might’ve just always liked the word and improved it into both characters (and it just caught on with Jack since Pirates was the bigger hit and spawned a franchise)

    I may be looking too much into it but I’m thinking maybe EL spit out the pork as an attempt to save the life of the cook.

      It was meant to look very low budget. This is acfaually the third installment in Director Robert Rodriguez "Mexico"Trilogy. The 1st was El Mariachi, 2nd was Desprerado. Readoning behind the low budget look was because El Mariachi was made with only $7,500.

      How bad the movie is? This is right up there with all of the spaghetti westerns ever made and will stand alongside them in history. Perfectly crafted for it's intentions.

    When I first saw this scene I had an Interesting take on this, I thought the cook worked for the cartel and attempted to poison him and Sands knew it by the taste. So he had "El" taste it, and "El" could obviously also tell it was poisoned so he spit it out. Thus confirming to Sands that there was something wrong with the food, so Sands finishes the meal after taking an anecdote to prevent the poison (unseen), but kills the "cartel hired" cook for the offense. Does that make you feel better?
