  • What is a Bildungsroman? What are its origins and characteristics? What are some common examples of the Bildungsroman?
In this short lesson, Senior Lecturer Sam Schwartz answers these questions through popular examples and Goethe's novel Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship. The video is designed to help high school and college English students identify examples of the Bildungsroman and analyze features of the genre within and beyond their literature classes.

Thank you so much for this. I am in the planning stages of writing an essay on The Girl with a Pearl Earring on this topic. This helped a lot. I also appreciate you putting the MLA citation on the web page.

So Bildungsroman is a German archaic term for a coming of age genre?

Great question, George! We would say sort of. Calling a novel a Bildungsroman rather than a coming-of-age story certainly calls attention to its historical as well as formal features, but we wouldn't use the negative term archaic. If we were to call Harry Potter a coming-of-age story, we would be calling attention to its plot. If we were to call it a Bildungsroman, we would be calling attention to its plot AND placing it alongside a common set of novels that begins in the 18th century. Why might we want to do so in a literary analysis? What kind of analysis would readers of that hypothetical essay or discussion expect would follow?
