Transportation in 2050 (Vehicles of the Future)

  • By 2050, global transportation will be vastly different than today. Vehicles will go electric and fully autonomous, transporting people around with no human interaction. Meanwhile, autonomous semi-trucks, vans and robots will deliver packages. In cities, buses and electric robotaxis will shuttle people around on streets and in underground tunnels. In the skies, eVTOL’s will also fly passengers around. On the ground, high speed trains and hyperloop systems will quickly transport people across continents. Across oceans, supersonic jets and hydrogen airplanes will move passengers around. In domestic markets, electric planes will do the same. In the oceans, electric boats and super containers will move people and cargo around. Lastly, in space, rockets, space elevators and space catapults will get people and cargo into orbit and across the solar system.

This video puts too much confidence into Elon Musk. The way to reduce car traffic isn't to "make it 3D", but to reduce car usage by expanding public transport while making cities friendly walkable and bikeable. Cars are the most inefficient, anti-human and costly mode of transport to exist in modern times, and we should make sure to minimize their use wherever we can.

@@FUTUREDTECH Most cities in the world by then should have realised the effects of urban sprawl, and have invested in walkable, bikable cities with extensive public transport networks. Densely populated Countries like India, Japan and Germany will have many high speed rail projects either built or in the works. High speed rail will replace short haul flights in most countries. Fossil fuel cars will have mostly been phased out by now and replaced by electric cars. Cars would only really be used by enthusiasts, people who need them for their jobs and taxis. Super sonic planes might be in use by then as well. 30 years isn't that much so no FTL type space ships or anything.

Way too optimistic on some things here:
    - Hyperloop is a highly questionable transportation concept in early development. Even if it proves itself to be effective, it'll take way longer than 2050 for it to replace high-speed rail (which continues to improve as well) in most urban areas. On top of this, The Boring Company still has hardly any projects to its name IIRC.
    - Gyroscopic buses sound like an engineering and safety nightmare that will become utterly pointless once highways see less use due to the aforementioned high-speed railways as well as increased bike / scooter usage. I hadn't even heard of gyroscopic buses before this video, and it's easy to see why.
    - While I love Starship and SpaceX, I don't see Earth-to-Earth as a viable transportation method once supersonic / hypersonic aircraft become prelevant in the industry. At some point you're shaving off half an hour of time for an extreme price increase, so at best it'll be an extremely niche market for the uber-wealthy. Starship to the Moon and Mars? Absolutely. Earth-to-Earth? Not so much.
    - While the fantasy for space elevators is wonderful to play with, in practice they'll already be obsolete by ~2030 if Starship achieves mass production & low operating cost. At the end of the day, same problem as the gyroscopic bus except magnified tenfold.

      - Starship for inter-planetary travel, but not Earth-to-Earth unless it's for military purposes / the uber-wealthy.
      - Hopefully loads more high-speed rail in the West, it's really a matter of getting it built at this point IMO.
      - Autonomous vehicles, though safety regulations will probably see them in limited use even in 2050 (for good reason).
      - Supersonic aircraft, because you just know airlines will eat them up (and already are) once they're quieter.
      - Speaking of which, electric aircraft for short-range air travel. Hard to know if hydrogen will pan out for medium-long range, but short-range will be electric all the way.
      - Electric boats, because they're actually pretty reasonable once you think about it (plenty of room for batteries, get plenty of sun, don't need to travel extremely fast etc.)
      - Delivery robots, but mostly ground-based outside of niche aerial applications in rural areas.

    My take:
Boring tunnels for cars will not solve the problem. We should build more pedestrian and cycle friendly cities with good reliable and fast public transport and plan the city in a way that most stuff is walking distance. In Europe a lot of cities are doing it, a city for people and not cars.
Hyperloop still had to prove it is a doable and sustainable technology. Until than I remain really sceptical.
Flying cars seem impractical, because in case of an incident there is a lot of damage and maybe even deaths. Drones will probably be used more, but we will see how much.
Rockets earth to earth is also to much uncertainly

I don't believe in the feasibility of boring tunnel pods or hyperloops as very widely spread means of transportation. Very costly transportation infrastructure has to be efficient to be worth while investing in, therefore I think expansion of many kinds of trains and bus systems are feasible but not the individualistic kind of "pod" systems akin to boring tunnels.

    In a more realistic way
1.Good Countries will have every major city connected with driverless highspeed railway.
2.Elctricity or hydrogen will be dominant energy source.
3.We will trying to create self sustaining colonies on MOON or MARS(As private players are always better than Govt entities)
4.Domestic air travel will reduce dramatically due to remote working and high speed railway.
    5. Automation will be on full swing and unemployment will be a big issue.

Yeah! I'm not sure if you've noticed, but technology sure is slowly starting to look a little bit futuristic right now as of 2022! ESPECIALLY when it comes to cars! Because of this, I feel like ever since the 2020s started, I feel like we've OFFICIALLY started the begging of futurism, so I have a good feeling that at least half of the things he said are gonna happen by the year 2050! 😱😁
