My Helix 3.50 Firmware Update Went Wrong! (Here's How I Fixed It)

- I've updated my Line 6 Helix firmware many times before and never had any problems. Until now.
Line 6 have just released their latest firmware update for their Helix range, firmware update 3.50. I have read several stories of people updating and having it go wrong and seeing messages like "Boot Failure. Entered Update Mode!" And I was sure I could handle a firmware update that I (like many others) had done many times before. But that wasn't to be.
What did I do wrong? And more importantly, can this video help you out of a precarious and frankly frightening situation?

Incredible coffee making skills
Haha! Glad you appreciate 🙂
@@ProFunctionist One question, I noticed you pour boiling water over an empty filter...Is that a way to clean out bleach or benzine chemicals in the filter? Just curious as to why?
@@luchorios5663 Yes, you're rinsing the filter before adding coffee getting rid of the paper and chemical tastes and also helps to warm the brewer and mug.
You have rescued me from the deepest despair. When the firmware update failed and I got the thin red line of death across my Helix screen, I considered dusting off my old pedalboard. But now my Helix LT is back! So thanks for the advice.
OUTSTANDING video mate! You addressed many of my questions...now ready to load it onto my MacBook Pro!
Thanks, brother! I had started the update from my Mac while I went back to my work PC. I think the screen saver issue you mentioned messed me up too. I appreciate that you took the time to help your fellow musicians. I'm sending Peace & Love and a coffee your way. Cheers!
First time I've had this problem in 4 years of updates, many thanks for your help and guidance.Sorry you had to go through all the research and troubleshooting so we don't have to👍👍.
Thankyou for this message man. I have still not updated my helix because I was so scared with that boot failure message on screen
It's a great update. I did it on my ancient yet solid Mac Pro 2008 !
Wow, sorry to hear you went through all this. On the positive side - even though I watched this at 10:30 PM I totally craved a coffee. So, nice job!
Haha! Thanks! I've been trying to up my coffee game recently.
Worked it out just as you advised. Bingo! Thank you so much Profunctionist!
Glad you got it worked out. Scary for sure. My LT updated to v3.50 perfectly but I did read all the step by step instructions and followed them word for word!!!
Thanks for this - I had exactly the same issue on update 3.7 as my MacBook went into sleep mode in the last seconds of the update. I also note that my MacBook won’t download the updater due to security issues ??? Had to use windows laptop which fixed it. Appreciate the tip - I’ve had this before but couldn’t remember how to fix it. Updater is the fix!!
The last update nearly bricked my Helix. I'm never updating again. I don't care how good the new firmware might be.
I feel your pain.
I had the same problem using a Windows Laptop that was plugged in and I made sure it never went to sleep. I reset the Helix, performed update, reboot, now all is well. Scary process non the less. I'm glad everything ended well. I do love the update and was well worth the process!
I felt your pain -- the same thing happened to me, and I followed the instructions to a T. I'm on Windows and ran the update from HX Edit and watched it hang on "Boot Failure, Entered Update Mode!" where I let it sit for 45 minutes then left it up overnight where it was still stuck there in the morning -- not a good feeling at all. And my computer never went to sleep during the process. Running the Line 6 Updater fixed it. They say misery loves company, but so does triumph. So here's to triumph! Cheers. Hardware: Windows 10, Helix Rack.
I guess I’ve been lucky, every time I’ve done a Helix update it has gone as planned. I do follow the instructions and am careful not to disturb my MacBook Air whilst it’s updating so I think you may have a point that the computer going to sleep does interrupt the process as that could disconnect the USB port thus causing the error message. My MacBook is a 2020 M1 model so I have to use a hub to connect the older usb lead to the usb C port but that has not caused me an issue so far. I also use an app called Caffeine which stops your computer going to sleep, it’s on the Mac App Store and probably available for Windows as well. I can recommend it as a possible solution to stopping your computer going to sleep, maybe it is a solution to this update failure issue.
Oh wow, I haven't used Caffeine in years. I had it on my old MacBook Pro 2009. Great call to use Caffeine in this context. Thanks for suggesting it.
I had similar problems with a unique situation which I will not go into. But yes I would plug my computer into the wall then hook into HX edit with your helix then go through the back up. And back everything up. Then didn’t get out of it and turn off your helix and hold the foot switches together and clean off all your firmware. Then plug it back into the computer and try it that way and you probably won’t have as much problems. But I ended up going to the updater for my Helix. Then when I did my HX stomp it all worked in normally
Glad to hear there was a happy ending!
Hey Bro! I have spent better part of a decade trying to make my Wolfgang Guitars all purpose for gigs (clean tones). Your AC30 patch changed my life. Thank You!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I did buy you a coffee 12 days ago for that. I just wanted to make sure you are aware. You are great!
Thanks so much! Appreciate the coffees but also glad the presets helped your tone journey!
This was great video. My Helix update went fine, but I've read many stories from forums that people had many issues while updating. I think the most usual scenario is that the computer somehow/for some reason disconnects the connection to Helix. If this is the case, you get stuck to the "boot failure..." screen and you never see the "resume" button in hx edit. Thankfully we have the line6 updater software.
That's exactly what happened to me. I thought we were done with the Line 6 Updater but it has made a worthy come back FTW!
I had the very same thing!! I totally shit my pants 🤣👍🏼
Hope you managed to get it sorted.
Hi all! I have HX stomp, the firmware was 3.11, I decided to update hx edit to 3.50 today and an error occurred. Now the computer does not see the processor and when you turn on the stomp, it loads forever. I did it through a Macbook air through a usb hub,. I made a backup before the start of the update. I don’t know how to roll back to the factory settings. If anyone has come across this problem, please help.
I haven't updated my Helix since like 2.3. I dont know if I should make all other updates individually or can i go directly to 3.50?
My update from 2.5 to 3.5 went flawlessly but during the firmware update process (at 50% complete) I did get a windows popup about an unsigned driver and that Windows doesn't allow unsigned drivers. It also said the driver wouldn't be available and that I should uninstall the software. I just clicked "OK" at the popup and the update completed successfully and the Helix reconnected to Helix Edit as expected. Not sure if it's gonna affect anything going forward but so far so good.
Brother, that first 5 sec. sound like me right now!! I to got to the that page where it says what do you want to update, and it stuck there and stayed that way? I'm going to give it another try, if it doesn't work this time, it gets boxed up and sent back!!!
Same shit just happened to me with 3.6 🙄
Thanks for your helix videos sir. could you possibly do a video a to dial in the michael thompson eventide 3000 sound on the helix? its in this video czcams.com/video/146hwtCwyP4/video.html demo time codes are 15:20 to 21:10.. i have a suspicion that specific signal chain could be a bit too much for helix to handle even with closest effect models available.
This is complete bullshit. You have to get it into update mode, but mine won't even go into update mode. Haven't used it in awhile, turn it on and get "Updating UI MCU Firmware, please wait." Wasn't connected to anything. Nothing. Shouldn't have tried to update firmware. Did look online. Took about 6 times turning it on with holding down the 6 and 12 buttons to get it to go into Update mode. Finally after waiting for like 4 mintues it finally said "Firmware failed to load, going into Update mode" and was able to connect with HD Edit. Got about halfway through and stopped. (from PC with nothing else running but I was watching it), now I can't get it to go back into Update Mode again after HOURS of restarting with those buttons pressed. I put in a ticket, but they don't answer. It DOES show that it did update the firmware to 3.71, but other than that it's the same "Updating UI MCU Firmware..." It bricked without me even turning it on.
I'm there too, shouldn't have gone for 3.71 . I even tried backscaling the updater and going back to 2.80 with no luck. I have backup pedalboards but nothing like the Helix. I wonder if buying a new unit will give the same problems... ?
@@christianboddum8783 I opened mine up and it was a very easy fix. There is the main motherboard and underneath it is a small board that isn't really secured to the top one. It just plugs into the pins from the top board. Over time it had just come loose. Once I pressed it back into place I could do the update no problem. It's been fine ever since
Maybe it was dumb luck but when I updated the HX screen went all gobbledegook. USB was going 6 into a hub (I never read that part) but justvwauted6atvthe boot failure part and everything went perfectly. I wonder if it's older helixes that are having issues, like ones that were made before a certain update or something?
There has only been one version of the Helix so the hardware would have been constant since its release (as far as I'm aware). Although with the firmware there have been times where you would have needed to update the Line 6 Updater software before updating anything else. So, depending which firmware you are coming from. yes, you may be correct. Glad you managed to update successfully!
@@ProFunctionist oh yeah I meant older software versions, my bad. Glad yours is up and running in any case! Are you loving the new cabs so far?
@@Crabfather Still haven't had a chance to try the new cabs. I'm still programming for an upcoming gig where my Helix is used with my amp, so no need for cabs on this one. Looking forward to checking them out though.
I guess I’ve been lucky, every time I’ve done a Helix update it has gone as planned. Thanks for your input. I remember Caffeine. I had it on my 2009 MacBook Pro. Great use for it in this situation.
