  • Rule #1: Don't play it if you don't know it. Just listen, learn it, and then play it next week.

Yeah, good post! I think one of the most fun things about Celtic music is the reharmonization - and why 1970s Irish music was such a hoot!

Thanks for the word of caution. I think it's interesting that many listeners today consider chords to be endemic to Irish music, but that is not the case: the first recordings with chordal accompaniment (mostly piano) were made in America in the early 1900's, and guitars were originally banned by Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann.

I was recently at a “beta,” for lack of a better word, startup session where a locally respected old time player was frantically stroking his iPhone to look up THE chords. In a chat over Guinness a spectator wondered how it was possible to play a tune without the chords. Easy, I said. Have the guy put it back in the case. We’ll see if this session gets off the ground.

Sean, a question for you. Are there any professional tin whistle players like yourself who only play popular music on the whistle? Although I love listening to your music, I’ve never been a big fan of Irish music. I find myself playing jazz standards like Moon River and others. Thank you.

So you're asking an irish musician, if there are other musicians who play the same instrument he plays, in other genres, because you don't really like the genre of music he plays?... good luck with that one pal
