  • Welcome to the first video in a new cocktail series Pop Culture Cocktails! In this series We'll take cocktails from Films, Television Shows and other Pop Culture vehicles and reconstruct them into delicious drinks we hope capture the essence of what their authors intended. In this video brilliant LA Bartender Chris Day (Newly defected to SF actually) makes us his interpretation of the Butterbeer drink as seen in the Harry Potter series. Because Chris has an unparalleled eye for detail he also made sure that 99.9% of the ingredients in this cocktail hail from England!
    It's also worth mentioning that Butterbeer is an actual drink with an actual history, not really a creation of the brilliant J.K. Rowling. The drink hails all the way back to 1588 Tudor England and is not unlike a Flip or Egg Nog really, and seeing as Mrs. Rowling holds a degree in the Classics from Exeter University it's not a stretch to see where she got inspiration. At some point I will do the classic recipe for this drink but I thought this would be a break from the recipes floating around. Something unique and quite delicious. This drink is great and you should all give it a try. Find out why Harry himself donned his invisibility cloak and risked expulsion from Hogwarts just to get his magical little mitts on this drink.
    A Note: This cocktail works very well with Lager but in the video we use Boddington's Pub Ale and that is delicious as well. Make sure you use a 12oz Pilsner glass when topping off.
    Also we are aware that there's a typo in the end screen the amount of Brown Butter Fat Washed Vodka should read 22.5ml not 45ml we didn't want to lose the views on this one so we are not for the time being going to take it down to fix it. Hope you guys understand!

    Do you have any recommendations for which bourbon to butter wash? Or maybe just a certain flavor profile that works well with it?

    • @dayknowsalchemy
      @dayknowsalchemy Před 5 lety +2

      Last brown butter bourbon I used was Four Roses yellow label. Higher-proof actually makes for better flavor extraction, so your best bet would actually be Evan Williams bonded (white label) or Fighting Cock.

    • @AbyssWalkerDraiden
      @AbyssWalkerDraiden Před 5 lety

      Christopher Day Ok cool. So do you think Four Roses would be too low of a proof? It’s kind of my favorite so that’s what I was thinking of washing. But EW White Label sounds good too

    The cream sherry seemed a little too prominent to me (perhaps it’s because I’m not a huge sherry fan). I think butterscotch liqueur would be interesting to include, but I’m definitely a novice when it comes to flavor pairing, etc. I tripled the amount of vanilla liqueur to give it a sweeter taste. Still wasn’t crazy about it, but it did improve the drink overall - to me. Thanks for the video/recipe!

    Is there a specific kind of beer that works best with this cocktail? I mean, I'm assuming stouts and such would be out, but I wasn't sure if there was a preference as to IPA's, Pilsners, etc...looks great btw though!

    • @TheEducatedBarfly
      @TheEducatedBarfly  Před 5 lety +4

      yeah, Lager is the best to use, but Boddingtons Pub Ale which we use in the video is really nice. You don't want to use anything too flavorful and coplex because you'll lose the sherry flavor profile otherwise.

    would Tuaca work instead of Vanilla liqueur?

    • @dayknowsalchemy
      @dayknowsalchemy Před 5 lety +1

      Unlike Tuaca, Giffard Vanille is extremely one-note and vanilla forward (IE I do not recommend trying it as a shot, as one would with Tuaca), and is why I use so little in each drink. I wouldn't discourage you from putting some Tuaca in there for some nuance, but the overall flavor profile of the drink needs more vanilla flavor that what Tuaca is packing. Even if that flavor comes from a drop or two of extract. Give it a try and let me know how it comes out!

    i wanted to comment here this is makes more sense here. we need more cocktails with beer. i do Guinness with a 1/2 oz bushmills white label and 1/2 oz Bailey's(Irish Dynamite ), i feel one of the herby spirits could pair with the hops of a pale ale. so how about a beer episode?

But Harry Potter is still a book for Children and Teens and I highly doubt that the Author intended to tell young peolple that alcohol is a good thing. And yes, we in Europe can drink alcohol earlier than the US, but the Kids drink Butterbeer long before they are 16.
