  • Cherokee dancer performing the Northern Traditional Dance, a warrior's dance, at the Ocmulgee Mounds Native American Festival (~2004???). The drummer/singer/announcer explains the meaning of the dancer's regalia. Fascinating! (Best viewed on a smartphone due to small video size.)

What a privilege to see this. There were actually some Cherokee who escaped the long march to the plains, and were able to preserve at least part of their culture in the Southeast. This is precious and priceless to this country, whether most of us realize it or not. Thank you so much.

My family were half breeds who refused to go on the trail of tears.

Eastern band hid for years to avoid being removed, so we lost much of our culture. We lived in a very small community, and my grandfather taught me how to manage the mountain woods, and how to handle wild animals. Yes, even snakes. My dad would shoot squirrels for us to eat. It was beautiful there, but now much of the lang belongs to rich people who build big houses. Someday all will be right.

I believe that was the case for my great-grandfather. He left North Carolina and went to Virginia, where he met and married my mulatto great-grandmother. As I started to look further into my family tree, I was told he was full blooded Cherokee "Indian" (Native American), but on the Census he is listed as mulatto. But when I think of the persecution the Cherokee nation faced during forced relocation under "The Trail of Tears" I can clearly understand why he would list his race as mulatto and not "Indian".
But it is hard for me now to find out about his family and that side of my culture. But it brings joy to my heart to see videos like this and to hear all the beautiful information and history behind each part this traditional costume. It dispels all of the wrong ideas about Native American tribes being violent, primitive and without human compassion towards other tribes.

The Cherokee have a great sense of humor. My parents within kids, my brother was a baby, went to a program held by the Indians. We are 1/2 Cherokee. We saw the dances, beautiful costumes, the chiefs family had a baby also. They met my parents speaking of both babies.
My dad asked the name of their baby? The chief said they called him "Little chief rain in the pants."
My dad thought that was hilarious. They were cordial and nice people.

Cherokee Indians Are Awesome!! Lived and grew up in Knoxville Tennessee. Cherokee is less than an hour from Knoxville. Went to Cherokee almost every weekend. Have so so many photos of The Cherokees. Their blood runs deep in Cherokee. Its absolutely beautiful in Cherokee especially in the winter time. Lots of snow. The roads that take you through Cherokee show how these Cherokees live today. Totally mesmorizing❤

I too, a mix breed, but I hale my Cherokee Nation and I am proud of it! I am in my twilight years, but long ago, my father who was Cherokee mix told me I should never tell people that I am part Native American. Why, because back in his days (he was a WWII Navy Man, who also served on the Shores of Normandy!) My beloved Father Clifford C. Clodfelter told me if I told anyone of my Native American Heritage, I would be looked down upon as a black person is/was...My Grandmother Bessie was 1/2 Cherokee, and she married a German! Go figure?! She always wore her hair in long braids wrapped around her head, she was a beautiful soul. She made her own jams and Vegetables from her large garden, and yes, the garden was big enough to grow corn. She taught me how to find fresh black berries/red raspberries in the woods...and make the best jam out of those tasty berries. I could digress , but I don't want to bore you folks! Granny Bessie was also half Irish/Cherokee! Go figure! So we are all immigrants of a sort, just like our ancestors! God Bless you and God Bless America! My Cherokee Heritage will always remain, strong & present in my life.

From an Indian, thank you for calling it correctly, regalia, and not a "costume". We are not "acting" or "trick or treating"!!! Its our traditional clothing, that dancers wear with pride. Its a way of life, not something worn just for fun. So thank you for recognizing.
To the ignorant or unknowing, now you know. It's disrespectful to call it' a costume. Most are to polite to correct, so now you know.

@@jasonchenoweth5448 I am trying to learn your true histories too. I always knew as a kid I was not getting a very good history lesson on much of anything. Also the format of white history is just disjointed with no real essence to it. The dances and songs got me thru COVID. I am grateful for all of you. The Hoop dancing just makes me happy. The Dine kept my spirits up. I will do what I can to help. Your lead. you can bet I will speak up. I also learned to say that I live on Cherokee land. I learned the depth of that. I live on Cherokee land. What is so cool about white people teaching lies and then rib joking that the victor writes the history. They know this and don't change. It is disgusting. How about we learn the histories of everyone from their own perspective. I am learning black history too. I think I want a total body tattoo so I don't identify with a culture I never fit into anyway. I am thinking of expatriating and hoping to get adopted into a community of nice people. I don't know what it is like to be Indigenous or black, but I do know what it is like to have no privileges, no family and no community. And a government that just slaps you down at every turn. Thinking about Columbia. Beautiful people and they just wrap their arms around you and pull you into their family. Stay safe and well.
