Toneforge Disruptor Is An Excuse Killer (Plugin Overview)

- This is a tour of some of my favorite features of Toneforge Disruptor, the new guitar tone plugin by Joey Sturgis Tones (JST) and Dino Cazares (Guitarist of Fear Factory, Brujeria, Divine Heresy, Asesino).
My goal with this video isn't to go in-depth with different sounds and capabilities or demonstrations. This video only scratches the surface of the versatility of this plugin.
This is just giving a basic overview of some of the features and some things that I like about it.
I apologize for my sloppy half-assed playing, and also if the preset I happened to use isn't your cup o' tea.

So cool you got to collab with JST on this project. I didn’t think I needed another amp sim plugin, but after seeing this video I might just have to try it out. So many cool features but I think my favorite is the dynamic EQ for controlling palm mutes.

Was messing with this amp sim tonight becausr i have not used it really since i got it and was going through the presets. Got to your presets and thought they sounded the best in the whole sim so i was like "who the fuck is greg fender because these presets are sick". Well. Here i am now..just subbed.

Would this prevent the problem of feedback. When i play in a 12x12 room with a drum set its hard to het far enough away from the stack so i get a shitload of feedback
A good noise gate will be your best weapon against feedback, as well as turning the gain/distortion down as much as comfortably possible for your style. You could also try turning your amp towards your drummer and standing next to or behind it, but that’s going to make it harder for you to hear.
You could theoretically run Disruptor on a computer and feed that into a power amp and speaker cab but you’d be up against the same feedback challenges and the solutions would be the same. If your guitar strings are being subjected to vibrations from your speaker cab and you’re using lots of gain/distortion, feedback is pretty much inevitable without a noise gate. Disruptor has a noise gate built in but if you’re happy with your amp and a gate is all you’re missing you could try snagging something like a Boss NS-1 pedal used for pretty cheap and it will clear up most of your issues. Also make sure you’re not using any more distortion than you actually need or you’ll only exacerbate your problems. Good luck! I know it’s a frustrating problem!

Good call! I’ve been making plugin profiles with my Kemper. I love having hardware for low latency tracking, even if I end up using the plugin for the final tone. If only I could get Disruptor’s DI processing features into the Kemper. 🤔
I dont get it. Im very low tech i just have a line 6 head on a stack. How do i go about using this. What do i need

If you just want to use Disruptor like an amp to play through you'd just need a compatible computer to run the standalone version of Disruptor on, as well as an audio interface to connect your guitar and speakers or headphones to the computer.
If you want to open up a whole new world where you can collaborate with other musicians all over the world and produce and release your own music without band members or a record label, You're going to need a computer running audio software that you find comfortable to learn (Pro Tools/Cubase/Logic/Reaper/Garageband/etc) and an audio interface (to get sounds in and out of the computer) and then you would be able to use the Disruptor plugin.
Plugins are software programs that basically "plug into" your chosen host program (DAW/Digital Audio Workstation). So say for example you choose Reaper as your DAW because it makes the most sense to you or whatever. Reaper is like a virtual recording studio in your computer. Your audio interface is Reaper's interface with the real world, converting sound from your guitar into digital information that can be recorded and manipulated in Reaper, as well as converting digital information back into sound so that you can hear what you're doing.
Plugins provide extra functionality to your virtual studio, kind of like putting a guitar pedal into guitar's signal chain, except this is all happening in a virtual environment in your computer. In the case of Disruptor, it's not just a guitar pedal but an entire studio processing chain for guitar sounds. So you've got some tools for shaping your guitar signal before hitting the amp, a few guitar FX pedals, the amp itself, more FX pedals that can go after the amp, multiple speaker cabinets of which you can use two at a time, multiple mics to put in front of said speakers, as well as EQ, compression and limiting to help shape the tone afterwards. Essentially all of the things that typically happen to a guitar signal in a studio environment happen inside the plugin, so you can call up a preset and have all of that stuff dialed in as a starting point.
That kind of just scratches the surface, but hopefully it helps. It's a long road if you decide to travel it, but it's extremely rewarding and its DIY music production is getting easier and easier all the time. If you're not a techy person (I kinda hate computers, myself) the learning curve can be a bit steep at first and there will be frustrating times for sure, but you don't need to be an expert to get started.
To further the point, in my opinion DIY music production is kind of like the "next step" for all musicians these days. The barrier to entry is incredibly low with the tools coming out recently.
You don't need to be an actual producer, but if you have the ability to record your own parts effectively at home you instantly become an incredibly valuable asset to a band compared to someone who doesn't have this capability.

Yes, there’s a special “cab” in the cab section that bypasses the amp and sends the DI through. Sorry I didn’t cover that much in this video.

This is my first big jump into plugins and i've never seen such a heavy handed DRM like ilok. Once you get past all that BS, the plug in is really great. It has some cool ideas, some it doesn't do very well at all but it doesn't bring the experience down. The "low end tightener" really doesn't do anything at all. I've yet to come across a video or anyone being able to say it actually changed anything.
In my experience the effect can be subtle but it’s definitely noticeable. Depending on the setting it reminds me of putting a high pass filter in front of an amp. It’s not a night and day difference but it’s definitely there. Are you playing your guitar through it live while switching through the modes or running a DI though it? It will be easier to hear the changes in a mixing context but it’s definitely there if you cycle through the different modes during playback.
I agree, the iLok can be a pain in the ass sometimes but it seems like half of my plugins use it so I’ve kind of gotten used to it over the years.

Sick. I purchased it. I just don't know why my daw (Reaper) doesn't recognize the vst3 and the folder path is set correctly. It only recognized the standalone.
I seem to recall having plugins that would do that occasionally when I was using Reaper but I can't remember what I did to get around it. It's definitely annoying when it happens. I assume you already tried restarting everything. If none of that works maybe an uninstall/reinstall might fix it, otherwise you might need to contact tech support and see if there's a fix. I hope it works out without too much fuss!
