    I think the comments about taking an infantry squad command blob instead of Catachan are spot on. It’s not just the mortar heavy weapons. It’s because infantry squads get cover for sitting on a circle, plus they can get a take cover order to stack protection from enemy indirect fire trying to break up the command blob. Better offense and defense by using 5 left over points is hard to beat.

    • @janehrahan5116
      @janehrahan5116 Před 5 měsíci +6

      frankly im suprisded 20 command blobs aren't more common. Every time I see a 10 man guard command blob, I drop 2 guard teams in on it and nearly always charge and 1 round removing orders for the rest of the game, I feel like 60 more points for 10 more wounds is better

    • @CatharsisChaser
      @CatharsisChaser Před 5 měsíci +5

      @@janehrahan5116 because adding another 10 guys to just sit behind an wall on an objective isn't worth it, that's 60 points you could spend on something like a scout sentinel or scion squad. Currently they are just a tax to glue the lord solar ( who forgot his acheotech vox at home apparently) and a command squad together, and bring a mortar so that you can tag anything within 48" with fields of fire
      An extra 10 wound won't really matter that much if you opponent has anything that will be a serious threat, if anything you're just giving them 2 extra free blast shots

    • @FredrickDouglass69
      @FredrickDouglass69 Před 5 měsíci +2

      It depends if you have the 5pts to spend or not. 5pts for a mortar is nice. The plasma gun and plasma pistol sarge will come up occasionally if they send a unit round the back somehow.

    • @heavyweaponsguy4498
      @heavyweaponsguy4498 Před 5 měsíci +2

      Another good thing about it is if you go with double mortar (one in the infantry squad, one in the command squad) it makes the unit slightly less susceptible to blast weapons, since the unit will only have 14 models. It's something to keep in mind, since the biggest threat to Solar's CommandBlob after deep strikers is artillery.

    Here's the take I threw together. Triple Dorn, obviously, Lord Solar command blob using Platoon Command Squad and a ten man Infantry Squad with two mortar tubes between them. For artillery I was actually thinking instead of Basilisks go with two Earthshaker Carriages supported by Creed, which means Lord Solar can concentrate on the tanks. For my infantry I went with a 15-man Scions team for deep strikes, and two Cadian "super-blobs" - a Castellan, a command squad, and 20 shock troops. I might be biased myself, but I feel like for playing the objective game, having that many OC 2 bodies with Cadia Stands in the mix is a really solid choice to stay standing on a circle. (That all the infantry I have right now are Cadians. 😅 )

    I would take an infantry squad with a mortar for the command blob, and then I would give the command squad a mortar instead of plasma gun and medic. Double mortar is useful for Fields of Fire. You have the spare 5pts for it.
    Also, Gaunt's Ghosts could be worth looking at for secondaries, especially now they can order out of reserve.

    tbh with 3 dorns, might as well go shadowsword + baneblade imho, its only 930 vs 780. it costs 150 more but you get far more firepower, the durability is slightly lower vs heavy at or light at, but the most common at (s12) is even.
    Edit: the only downside to this is if tournaments keep doing the cringe "large models can't leave deployment zone" terain.

    • @Hardcover_Pilot

      Terrain would be my primary concern. I've heard and seen a lot of stories from people using superheavy tanks where they were effectively neutralized by terrain, trapped in deployment and sometimes never even getting to fire a shot. Hell, I've even heard sometimes people can't even get their Dorns out of deployment, but that's much more rare.

    Heres my take, point is to completely overwhelm the opponent with armour, rendering all anti infantry firepower useless. 1 Enginseer with a bunch of Russes was always useful, could swap out one for a couple of cyclops. Just keep rolling Chimeras onto the central objective, use the rest of your force to hold up home objective and one in NML.
    Lord Solar
    2 x Enginseer
    Tank Commander with grand strategist (allows you to fight with it and the Dorns on two fronts)
    Command Squad with mortar, vox, medic (for popping Suppressing Fire on things)
    3 x Catachans with Chimeras
    Keig Infantry Squad with vox (for command blob)
    Scions (or heavy flamer scout sentinel) for secondaries
    Basilisk (just to slow things down, not looking for major damage)
    3 x ROGAL DORN
    Calidus Assassin
    (Dropping both Engineseers and scions/sentinel gives you enough for a cyclops and Catachans/Chimera or Basilisk depending how you like to score secondaries or want more indirect fire power)

    Not a guard main guy myself but been playing against them a lot...and personally been running a double land raider ironstorm list so I'll give my go at this for fun. Only thing I want to talk about is Oppressor Cannon vs. Twin-Battle Cannon...I don't know but I think the Oppressor cannon isn't actually better. Having used Predator autocannons...that statline is fairly weak for what it might be firing at or just outright ill-fitted. By all maths, the Twin-Linked Battle Cannon offers far more consistency with wounding rates and even better wounding rates on average, even against harder targets. If I remember my maths right, unless you are wounding something on a 6 (firing at something with T20...) then any roll that includes FULL re-rolls is better than having a one stage better wounding rate.
    5+ with re-rolls is better than 4+ wounding.
    4+ wounding with re-rolls is better than 3+ wounding.
    It just adds consistency in my opinion. The lower AP is a factor but in my ol' go of it, I have things to help support the core 3 tanks.
    So what do I suggest for the list? Here's my HOT HOT take on it.
    Leontus
    Ursula Creed
    2x Platoon Command, Master Vox, Medi-pack, Mortar. One officer has Drill commander (goes with Leontus), One has Grand Strategist (goes with Creed). Enchancements because i had 35 points left.
    2x Infantry squads both with mortars.
    3x Rogal Dorns with Twin-battle canons, Meltaguns, Multimeltas and pulviser cannon
    6 Bullgryns with Brute Shields and Mauls
    1 Hellhound with Multi-Melta and Hunter Killer
    3x Scout Sentinels (each on their own, not in one squad) with lascannons and Hunter Killers (and chainsaws)
    3x Kasrkrin squads with Meltaguns, Plasma guns, Sniper and melta mine.
    Main theory craft here is using Creed to double up on Field of Fire (FoF) usage or to enable its usage even if hit by a Vex (+1CP tax ability). This is why both her and Leontus squad have double mortars, to aid in consistency of getting that trigger and enabling the doubling of that effect. The Hellhound also helps by being able to turn off cover benefit for a target, so for things like tanks this could be very helpful even if you don't go full combo, having AP1 now matter again for the battle-cannons means even a 2+ save is suddenly dropping a lot more wounds. While every Rogal Dorn Ideally would have orders throughout the game, best to consider one of them a Flanking role tank that may do without an order from Leontus turn 1 who I would ideally have ordering 2 of the dorns + the Bullgryns (give the Bullgryns Move Move Move). The one dorn flanking should be positioned where the opponent has put weaker units that may not be able to contest a dorn, with Leontus re-deploy this should be easily done.
    Scout Sentinels offer another layer of consistency and nuisance units. There are 3 lone sentinels running around and should be able to at least tag a priority target for re-roll 1s for the dorns each turn. Ultimately though, if they die they die...means the Dorns weren't taking fire and are now moving up.
    Now for the Kasrkrin. These guys are to get orders from Creed mostly to double up on Move Move Move to get objectives early, being the most annoying thing since sliced bread and ultimately be another element the enemy can't ignore once objectives start being a thing. This list could quite easily just set-up shop with Deploy Teleport Homer and Cleanse, Park the Bullgryns turn 1 on the centre for Deploy and the Kasrkrin just get to work triggering Cleanse over and over again, or maybe have a random sentinel just do it. Once the Kasrkrin get to position, just slapping them with orders for better saves and better OC means they are now harder to take objectives from AND they have a 3+ save with benefit of cover (highly likely anyway). If anyone gets close, they will take D3 mortals off them, of 2D3 if a vehicle is getting cute.
    Will admit though, this is me going incredibly against the guard grain by omitting entirely any real form of Indirect fire bar the mortars. However push comes to shove, Dorns and Kasrkrin can always help trigger FoF anyway if maybe you lose the mortars or maybe need those units to handle homefield trouble.
    Main issues: its a lot of large and bulky boys who may have a problem fitting both of their asscheeks through tables full of ruins that tournament run (and I play on those layouts...my land raiders STRUGGLE) so any movement blocking plays will likely set you back a full turn minimum. It also requires knowing how to order your movement as to not block yourself in. Again, my focus isn't to have all 3 dorns in the centre, I want 2 Dorns and the Bullgryn being the centre field attractions. The 3rd dorn is a flanking dorn that is operating to be something that should help where needed as needed. The Hellhound is likely the biggest challenge to move. with now easily 3 lanes clogged with metal, this puppy will just have to make do with what it can get.
    This isn't a list about hiding EVERYTHING. In fact, I might even suggest that instead of trying to hide completely, just hide from select enemy units (use loentus re-deploy to help) and reveal against other things. You do have Ablative Plating so use it, let that help you soak some firepower and if they do kill a Dorn, that's fine,; you got 2 more.
    Not a list that I think works out the gate and is easy to use but I think this one compliments the Dorns better.

    I kinda want the Rogal Dorn chassis to be used for more things, like different turrets. It would be nice to see it with an Anti-air turret with 4 autocannons or an anti heavy with a heavy lascannon. The conversion to tank-hunter we are seeing is amazing for example and GW could easilly make it official. Also The hull could be used to create a transport vehicle like an IFV (because it would be a more armored and better armed version of the Chimera, ehich is an APC) or mobile artillery.

    I like this army. It's funny that it's quite similar to my army in a few ways.
    I am a huge fan of the exterminator russ, scout sentinels, and rough riders. These did massive work in a tournament, but I see how the dorn is carrying the list here.
    If I was building the list I think I would find space for Ursula Creed, leaving her solo near the Solar Command Squad and making sure there was a mortar of some kind of that command squad. Handing out Fields of Fire across the board for free every turn has the tendency of turning infantry lasguns into absolute monsters.
    I do like the list though. I just painted my third dorn and my cyclopes so I can almost run it with the models I have...

    "I find your lack of Scout Sentinels... disturbing." nah but for real tho -
    Ofc there's validity in the list, its just the standard Mordian Glory 10th ed Index hybrid army with 3 Rogal Dorns instead of 1 Rogal and 3 Leman Russ. Its the same units taken over and over again but in different configurations. Really counted on Mordian of all people to explore the index and see what works, but every game is essentially the same units. Its head cannon that Mordian has a secret vendetta where he literally will not use Scout Sentinels, then when 11th comes out he say "Look I went all 10th without taking a single sentinel. Reject the meta." I dont understand why, but GW put an army wide buff mechanic on the chicken walkers. A squad of 3 will consistently apply daring recon every single turn, save 2 cp for reinforcements and they literally apply it every turn. Another two tools missing from the list is Creed and Guant's Ghosts.
    The 4 (5 honourable mention) 10th ed Guard Index Tools:
    1. Lord Sol
    2. Creed's FoF
    3. 3x Chicken Walker
    4. Guant's Ghosts
    (5) Exterminator Auto Russ.
    These are the units that actually make the faction function and punch well above our weight. For every one you're missing, the Guard list suffers ever more.
    Really hoping you try some new units sometime Mordian.

Won that game, now I am getting another Dorn, I fell in love with it.

    Current list is triple dorn, with 2 russ tank commanders (1 demolisher and 1 battle cannon) including grand strategist. Add in 2 basilisk, 3 scout sentinels round up with 2 10 man catachan squads and a 10 man infantry squad with platoon squad and 2 5 man scion squads for deep strike funsies 😁 the 3 dorns are always fun especially with ablative armour 😂

    Trip Dorn is fun at a tournament, I have been running it since december, easy to play on the clock and some armies just cant deal with it, since the data slate I have dropped indirect and play full aggro in the middle and it works surprsingly well. Solar blob (with DKoK), x2 bullgryn (6 strong), x3 Kasrkin in Chimeras, x2 clyclops, X3 Dorn and a Calidus. my personal experience is the chimera bullgryn wall is tough to push through and there is alot of mortal wounds on the front line with Kasrkin, and grenades on Bullgryn.

    I would say combine the remainder of points with 9 sentinals and the rest infantry. The composition of said remainder i would leave for you to pick but the principle is essentially the infantry to to foot slogging stuff, actions screening etc and the sentinals for screening a second line and fire support but qlso needing heavy weapons to realistically take down and diluting what will come the way of the dorns.

    I am always a fan of taking a scout sentinel or two, the only thing missing from this list seems to be access to re-rolls. I might cut one of the catachan blobs. 3’s re-rolling 1’s is a lot better than straight threes. Would also help the two basilisks not take the IDF penalty!

    I'm concerned that your Leo becomes a single point of failure. I'd prefer his bodyguard to be a bit tankier just in case.
    We're drifting towards a durability rules bypass meta thanks to C'tan, Girlyman, Deathwing etc, so Dorns are also going to get incidentally hated on.
    Other than the above concerns, seems sound.

    Tweaks needed I think. I believe the Catachans should be trimmed down from 2x20 1x10 to 3x10, Creed and an Infantry Squad with Mortar. Straken is the onky Dude doing actual damage in the Catachans and I would not want to miss Creed and Fields of Fire. Maybe you can substitute one of those Squads for a Scout Sentinel as force multiplyer

    So hear me out on why no lord solar. For 245 you get 3 tank orders, something to sit on a home objective, 2 mortars that contribute, and 1 extra cp per round. This is wrapped up into a super fragile unit that if anyone has precision or the dorns get more than 24 away, you have a problem.
    For 425 you can get two tank Commanders with grand strat. That gives you 3 tank orders 2 lascannons, 2d6+6 from the battle cannon, 4 multimeltas, and 2 heavy stub, a ton of wounds, and if they get popped fight on death. You orders are always in range of the dorn, no need to worry about precision.
    The difference between all that out put is 180 points.lord solar is fine, but he sits in the back and primarily contributes 3 orders for 245 points. He is also the first target of my enemy as if they get to him, everything falls apart. Just feel like 2 tank Commanders and 3 russes for 1205 is not that bad. Add in 2 basilisks and you still have 525 in points for infantry, enginseers, and action monkies.

    I've been thinking for a while now that the Russ is being soft replaced, especially now that it's been revealed that solar auxilia is getting a Russ and things in horus heresy tend to not get much support in 40k. Dorn generally does seem like a more effective way to get the durability and firepower you need in place of the Russ. Something I've been mulling over is whether or not the Dorn actually needs orders to be effective. With the oppressor cannon being d6+3 shots with blast, plus the fact that you have 3 of them, you might have enough volume to do reliable damage in spite of the 4 to hit, and if not then scout sentinels giving reroll one's might be enough to make a difference plus supporting the rest of the force as well.

    • @rjscorpion8892
      @rjscorpion8892 Před 5 měsíci

      I took the dorn without orders and felt it way underperformed compared to with an order. Maybe I was just off that day, but without orders it felt like it was more than a 16% difference. I will say it's not bad against smaller enemies so maybe you can have one order supporting two dorns and taking turns between them as to which gets the order.

    I don't know your meta, but in mine 20 men infantry (even Kriegs) last nothing. I love the channel but sometimes i see very big differences in style of list building: yours seems to have absolutely no anti infantry fire and somewhat lacking melee. Mine are made of mixed anti tank and anti infantry in form of as much blast possible, all elite 40mm based heavy infantry that can mow down 20 krieg in one go and half while keeping them out of objective control range thanks to their huge bases. The anti horde shooting is actively used also against high resistance targets especially when combined with sustained hits or devastating wounds, and it works. So i really struggle to take the no man's land of objectives and keep them for more then 1 turn or 2.

    2. Which is the main battle cannon offset, and not centered? Unless that think is loaded with gyroscopes or the opposite side of the tank is counterbalanced (why lol), that design both looks stupid and makes no sense.
