In their first game in the New Orleans Superdome since Hurricane Katrina, the Saints dominated the Falcons from start to finish. On the fourth play of the game, New Orleans blocked an Atlanta punt and recovered it for a touchdown. The game also marked a perfect 3-0 start to the season for the Saints, a great rebound to what was an unproductive 2005 season.

As a massive Carolina Panthers fan, I believe this was the greatest moment in the NFC south history. Congratulations New Orleans Saints.
That is definitely true, thanks for replying
+kerr.y and the rivalry. I worked construction in NOLA after Katrina at about 18yo. Every time I watch this game, I get choked up.
Dedication For Golf nah the best moment in the nfc south history is the falcons stopping Carolina from going undefeated
Meh
Sam Mills in Heaven is giving you thumbs up .
I get chills every time I watch Gleason's blocked punt. As a Saints fan and a resident of Louisiana, this game was one of the most emotional and uplifting moments in my life.
amen livin in KY now but still am and will always be a tiger fan and member of the WhoDat Nation. Trying to go to LSU for college
It almost makes me sad that Koenen has a statue for one of his worst moments.
I was there with my dad and little brother. The block and the double reverse happened right in front of us. It was so loud, I remember having to yell into my dad's ear: "Did you see Brees throw that' block??!!!" Goosebumps just thinking about it. Great memories WHO DAT!
BryceStawski same here bro we all needed that game so bad and it brought all of us closer together as a community, it didn’t matter about skin color or money it just mattered that we were still alive and with our families and honored those that did pass. But sometimes it’s something simple like a football game that can make everything better for a lot of ppl at least for a little while
WD4L
3:15 I love when broadcasters have the wherewithal to stay quiet and just let the moment speak for itself. Without a doubt, this was one of those moments.
yes! well said
As a Falcons fan, I never was so certain that we’d lose a game like I was this night. This moment was so much bigger than our rivalry. It literally lifted the town up
Nathan Butler Jr. 28-3
Pookie he lifts his hat for the Saints and that’s your response?
@@bleedingblue2300 ever since 2016 you can't be a falcons fan without a bunch of annoying people going 'hahahahaah 28-3'
Respect to you my friend. We needed this as a state
It's a trap game of epic proportions...
So many reasons to watch this game:
1-One of the greatest "Sports Matter" games ever.
2-Beginning of the Drew Brees/Sean Payton dynamic duo.
3-Horrible announcing duo of Joe Theismann and Tony Kornheiser. At one point Theismann responds to Kornheiser's analysis with "really??" followed by long awkward silence.
4-Steve Gleason's career-defining moment. Maybe loudest roar I've ever heard at an NFL game.
5-Mike Vick's last year with the Falcons before going to jail. Cultural icon who decided killing dogs was more important than earning & inspiring millions. Falcons were a perennial contender with SB aspirations that year.
6-Spike Lee talking politics and Isiah 'The Savior' Thomas. Back when Bush was considered an evil President. By today's standards he'd be considered a saint.
7-Reggie Bush's home debut.
8-Read-Option actually existing in the NFL.
Doug Smith this deserves more likes
It’s so strange and nostalgic to see the offensive dominance era of the Saints begin here. If Drew only knew how many records he was going to shatter.
If only they knew in 4 short years they would be hoisting the Lombardi. Even though, I wish we had beaten Chicago that year and won it all. Would have been beautiful to have both championships by beating the colts and Peyton Manning.
Doug Smith
Thought you might be able to get through that comment and leave politics out of it. Unfortunately I was wrong.
Love Kornheiser’s speech after the block TD tho
Doug Smith I really don't like talking about politics especially in sports but Bush is definitely not a Saint in today's standards. If you checkout his resume he's the worst president of all time.
I'm not a Saints fan, but the Gleason block gave me chills. The TD was scored...and then Mike Tirico and company went silent for several minutes, allowing the pictures and the crowd to tell the story.
There was a video where he said they stayed silence because there was nothing they could say that conveyed the message better than the noise of the Superdome.
I don't think people were necessarily rooting against the Falcons, they were just rooting for the Saints. It would've been that way no matter who the Saints were playing against. First game back in the dome after Katrina and everything worked out for the Saints like it was fate. It was a magical night. Nobody would've stood a chance against the Saints that night.
badgyrl310 So True
badgyrl310 True Saints fans always root against the Falcons.
It wouldn’t be as much cheering if it weren’t against the Falcons. Would there still be lots of crowd noise? Yes. Would there be as much? I’d argue no.
SO TRUE!!!!!!!!!!
Facts💯
Rip Tom benson. Thanks for keeping the saints in our home of New Orleans.
Not trying to start a typical youtube comments section piss match here but Benson was literally so hellbent on moving the team to San Antonio around this time that Paul Tagliabue had to step in to prevent it. Winning a Super Bowl has made so many people forget what a shoddy owner he was.
@Eli Koger Meh
I remember in 2005 I remember hearing rumors about the Saints leaving town before Katrina
@@michaelleroy9281 It sounds silly but I don't think we, as a city and as a state, would have recovered as fast if it weren't for the Saints. Just bringing people together like that to have the escape was powerful af.
@@blakfloyd Yes, but he ultimately kept them here. He could have left and people would have understood why since our city/state was wrecked. He decided to stay. To say he didn't is just inaccurate. As a businessman, anyone in their right mind would have seen and heard pitches about moving after such a catastrophe, but he stayed and that's that.
The night we were all Saints fans!
Most of America was rooting for the Saints.
Yes.
Not really but it was good y'all city got the win.
💛🖤💛🖤💛🖤
Okay. The Superdome holds about 70,000 fans. About a million people said they were there. I WAS THERE. Walking into the stadium felt surreal because I thought it might not happen again. And my brother and I looked at each other when the punt was blocked in silence amidst the volcanic eruption of noise,as if to say, "Did that REALLY happen?"
same. Luckily I have photos to back it up.
Saints fail to recover fumble
Me: damn, that crowd would've lost their mind....
Gleason: hold my beer!
I remember watching this game that night and Kornheiser said it best, "That was more than just a football game, it was the rebirth of a team and a city." The Falcons had no chance.

Greatest saints game in history. Even over the bowl.
A unique franchise with the most passionate fans in sports
Hayden Legendre Facts
Been a fan since i can remember. I grew up able to see the Dome from my street corner.
After Katrina, the Saints were never the same.
They started winning a lot more
As one of the announcers said, for the people of New Orleans this was more than just a football game. The positive energy Saints players were receiving from the fans in the stadium must have been off the charts. You can't buy that.
2nd best Saints game behind the Super Bowl ⚜️
This game was way better the rebirth
Thank you nfl for posting this entire game. This means so much for us from New Orleans.
I love this free game friday thing
It's a dream come true
Paul Madison too bad
NFL Removes it
"Sacked by Vegeta"
NRobbi42 lol I was thinking the same thing!
That's not what the commentator was saiyan.
"That that Kakarot"
One of the greatest games in NFL History. Literally a rebirth of a city.

I was about 5 months old lmao
Thank you for everything, Drew.
For sure.
That moment Steve Gleason blocked the punt was so magical. Can't stop replaying it.
Not a Saints or Falcons fan but as a football fan for decades I'm sitting here 15 years after the event crying like a baby watching the "Rebirth".
Wow! That 2006 Saints Draft Class:
Rd 1. Reggie Bush, RB
Rd 2. Roman Harper, Safety
Rd 4. Jahri Evans, Guard
Rd 5. Rob Ninkovich, DE
Rd 6. Mike Haas, WR
Rd 6. Josh Lay, CB
Rd 7. Zach Strief, Guard
Rd 7. Marques Colston
Outside of the two 6th rd misses, almost every one of the picks had 10 year "Solid to All-Pro" NFL careers.
This was like watching the superbowl. The atmosphere in the Superdome was unreal.
One of the greatest games in Saints history! Steve Gleason's blocked punt helped to spark the fire in the Saints! Who Dat!
The greatest game
Saints first game back in the SuperDome was amazing.
Mike Vick was a once and lifetime talent and he blew It, redeemed himself but could've been the Best ever
Best ever? Naw
Its dad he wouldn't even win a ring.
no way to ever redeem himself after what he did to those animals. the NFL disgraced itself and sent a terrible message to the world when they let him back on the field and in the booth
As Michael Irvin said, "Don't tell me it's just a game!"
It's sad Steve Gleason got ALS. Raise awareness with the bucket challenge again!
I think everybody is "aware" at this point. Raise money to fund research instead
Here after hurricane IDA! Man its rough out here right now but we know how to survive !
Sean Payton looks like a little high school kid here lol
This game still brings a tear to my heart. I remember going to a friend's house to watch this game because I was completely rebuilding my house from Katrina still in which I lost everything I owned.
This is coming back on ESPN T O N I G H T ! 2020 . No talk about Corona for a few hours !
#whodatnation !
Reason why Mike Trico is one of the GOAT announcers
Well at least currently.
I lived in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina and this game was extremely emotional for many, many people. I watched this game at a local sports bar and when the punt was blocked in the 1st quarter, people openly wept, myself included.
I hope Drew Brees recovers from his insane injury. He means a lot to Louisiana and NO, especially after Hurricane Katrina. I was about a month away from turning 12 years old when Katrina happened.
THE DOME WAS ROCKIN
I CRIED LIKE A BABY ALL DAY LONG LEADING UP TO, DURING, AND AFTER THIS GAME!!!
WHO DAT!!!
Mike Vick always looked clean in the Falcons Jersey and the Visor.
Moss 84 gay
SacSaint 916 So it's gay to say he looked better in a falcons jersey.
Perfect logic
I prefer him in his Orange jumpsuit
Daniel David Stfu
In my opinion the greatest Saints play EVER!!!!!!
It didn't matter who the Saints played that night they didn't stand a chance
R.I.P. will Smith

Man I’m a huge saints fan from Mississippi and the hurricane hit the gulf coast hard and I remember watching this game while rebuilding my house it was very emotional
Gulfport? My grandfather lost his house down there.
I was 16. My family had evacuated to GA and had been I was living there for over a year. I missed New Orleans with my entire soul. I remember how I felt this day. I was so proud. This really helped put the pieces back together for a lot of us. We had hope that things could be good again.
As Theismann pointed out, this was a football game for the Atlanta Falcons. For us in NOLA? It was vindication. It is still hard to watch that block, feel the incredible emotion in the Dome, and not tear up.
This is the most important game in Saints history. WhoDat for life!
Superbowl....
@@firebird_spleen4190 nah
I was there along with my brother, mom, and dad. Absolutely loudest I’ve ever heard that dome. What an honor to be apart of that with 74k other fans. It was unbelievable
I'm glad to see that the NFL has preserved this historical moment and made it available for all to watch. Thanks.
I was 17 watching this game in a FEMA trailer that was in the back of my gutted house. When Gleason block that punt you could just feel the energy take over the whole city. I couldn't even go to sleep that night because I was so excited. It was something everyone needed at the time and I believe it was a big part of giving the region it's energy back. One of those games and nights I'll never forget till the day I die.
As a football fan and a citizen on the gulf coast that was impacted by Katrina, this just gives me goosebumps.
This game immortalized statue in front of dome of Gleason blocking punt
I remember watching this, I was in 6th grade getting ready for bed... my brother was in the other room, wasn't able to watch the exact, beautiful moment Steve Gleason blocked that punt... I ran into the other room yelling at my brother about what had just happened. Such a wonderful moment for an at-the-time hurting state. Everyone had something to rally for, and that we did
This is what it will feel like in the first post-COVID game allowing full fan capacity.
3:08 the play that gave the city of New Orleans hope.
these broadcasters were unreal for that play, it amazes me everytime i come back to watch this. Truly amazing, from lil info on the punter to LOOK OUT, to TOUCHDOWN NEW ORLEANS with the post slam, and the silence understanding that was not merely a football moment but an emotional moment for the millions in Louisiana. Thats easy for broadcasters when its a play that has a likelyhood of that result, but a block punt is no such play.. truly amazing job on their part.
Rest in peace
Will Smith
15 years later and I still love watching this game

when the play doesn't go as scripted, saints were supposed to take that fumble on Vick back to the house so have them block the kick recover in the endzone lol the nfl is fake af
No.
That's true... Unless it really is fake then we'd all be sad.
NFL Should Put a Video of Atlanta vs Raven with Vick
NFL nooo
Greatest play in NFL Football. Raw Emotion.
Notice how the commentators were all quiet after the blocked punt until the call for the extra point. That says enough when three of the best commentators at that time were speechless
This needs to never be destroyed because of its history. The stadium is what I'm talking about.
Great production by ESPN here. Stopping the clock, the announcers going silent. Really just letting this city celebrate their incredible moment after going through hell and back.
This really have me emotional I remember watching this game when we came back home it was so much going on but to see my team was what i needed
My goodness Sean Payton looks soo much younger..
13 years ago wow
Watching this in 2023 💪🏽.. let’s Geaux Saints !!
The falcons played against god that night, 504 unbroken
I love the saints
This was the first nfl game I have seen live it was a good one
Did anyone notice Fajata stripped the ball from Vick the play before the blocked punt which should have ending in a scoop and score?
I was there that night, after spending a year in Katrina exile in Alabama. I almost passed out after the Gleason Block, completely overwhelmed with emotion.. Still makes me, and all of the Who Dat Nation tear up.
Thank you so much for posting this!!!!!!!!!!! No place like Dome!!!!!!
Gleason's blocked punt gives me chills every time
Anyone else watch this before every saints game to get them hyped? Greatest play ever cant buy that emotion
I think this brees guy with a bumb shoulder is going to be something
Rip Will Smith.... you're a legend.
Don't forget Steve Gleason.
I love that the announcers say nothing as if they know what they have to say is no where near as important as what just happened they just let the noise on the dome occur and not talk over it
I was in a trailer at the time watching this game in jefferson parish( i was 25 at the time crying and cheering)
This is very good quality for 2006
GG Saints
It's so weird that for as popular and exciting a game as this is in our memories that there were no touchdowns scored for the final 47:54 of game time.
Steve Gleason is the GOAT
r.i.p. will smith. #WHODAT
Great game, though I wish the sound wasn't so low.
Turn it up.
I remember coming off from an Cable Transitions from Direct TV returning back to Bright House for the first time since it was cut off in July '03. When my Mom, was dealing with High Blood Pressure, Sugar, Diabetes, Chronic Hypertension, they'll take my Mom in the Hospital before my 17th Birthday when I was a Junior in High School.
Watching this makes me cry.
Jesus Sean Payton looks so different
This game will last forever
As a family wed watch every MNF game together. No matter what team played. And this one will always be one of my favorites
We didn't have a problem going home to our FEMA trailers that night...
I watched this game live, it was The Most Electric game I've watched.
As Saints fan, not only was this game satisfying because we beat our division rivals in our return home, but it was also satisfying that we kept Michael Vick out of the endzone the whole night in our return home. It was so satisfying especially because this was Vick's final season with the Falcons before he got arrested. We punished Vick for his hideous crime before the sheriff did
