  • In this the first part of our new series with John Henwood we hear his story, rising from the slums of Notting Hill (how times have changed) to the world of gambling. He started out, as so many did, as a school bookie, worked for William Hill then a colourful bookmaking character named Danny Quastel. From there he owned betting shops and dipped his toe into betting at the shark-infested waters of flapping greyhound tracks and point to points with some scrapes along the way.

The man is a class act. I recall coming back on the train from Folkestone [ 1986 ] with John and the late Lesley Spencer. He was , and still is, a lovely gentleman and substantial layer. Alas, I doubt we will see John on a racecourse again. Happy retirement.

What a great set of interviews John Henwood speaks so much sense. About George Baker I remember John Betting next to a man from Bournemouth called Stan don’t remember his second name. George Baker turned up the following season and his pitch was put in front of Stan and John Henwood. Poor old Stan was demoted but JH started saying you are not going in front of me. Johns strong evidence was he had his field book from the previous season and in his book was bets down to BOWLER so George went in behind JH and had he said become great friends. But it was not love at first sight.
