  • In 2012, OnMilwaukee's Andy Tarnoff toured the long-shuttered Northridge Mall. Ten years later, here are some never-before-seen photos and a look back at what it was like inside the "ghost mall." The original complete story is here: onmilwaukee.co...

I was born in '92 and my family looks at me like I'm crazy whenever I tell them about my memories of this mall. I know I was young when it closed down, but Northridge is very nostalgic to me. This was my childhood mall.

In my teen years I lived in Northridge Lakes (the townhouse/apartment community across 76th street from the mall), and spent quite a bit of that time at the mall. It was pristine and thriving at the time.
To see what it has become saddens me. What a waste...

I had many friends in the Meadows, and spent lots of time cruising your neighborhood back in the day.
Nowadays the Meadows has become a hot zone for shootings. Honestly, I don't even go near the area now, save for shopping at Menard's.

It was the Section 8 housing at Northridge Lakes that lead to the area's demise in addition to a poor geographic location for a large mall.

That place brings back so many memories. We moved in late 87 so never got to see the food court put in but we spent a lot of time at Spencer's and I remember seeing all the good movies at the theater. Smokey and the Bandit 1, 2 & 3, star wars and so many others.

It could easily be reopened. You know, the thing about malls is they're not the same as amazon. Its a shopping adventure. What you need is a group of new businesses and a flock of people who are sick of the same stupid brands and apps. Here are some people I'd be to open store in a mall:
-a tailor who has an interest in sewing and construction of garments over a desire to become rich instantly, making clothes i am proud of and ignoring what the internet says sells
-a florist who has unique taste in flowers and their display
-a cobbler who enjoys the process
-a hair stylist who's never heard of tiktok and feels at home in the salon
-a burger dad whos burgers are his art
-a film photographer who excells in developing her own photos in an hour
-an electronics enthusiast who does their own repairs and prefers to buy components in bulk
-a habberdasher who's decided to never log onto Facebook
    -someone buying surplus from DeltaMedia
-someone very good at building cars
-someone who likes a little bit of everything and has a lot of artisan contacts
-someone with a hobby if buying weird stuff from foreign wholesalers with no real use for the stuff they buy, and who digs an asian aesthetic
-someone who for whatever reason has a large collection of cool tuxedos in a wide range of sizes
-someone who really likes to make pretzels
-someone who designed their own styles of clothes and put more effort into it than just copying old navy
-someone who has been a life-long crafter and has connections to get the supplies in bulk
-someone who has a long history of airbrushing and tiedying
-someone with an enormous music collection
-someone who has connections on analog electronics
-someone who has connections on retro computers
-someone who has connections on retro video games
-someone who thoroughly enjoys coming up with events whether or not they think it will be "on trend"
-someone who enjoys coordinating those events and making them happen
-someone who designs beautiful architecture like you'd expect a good mall to have, and whom thinks everything on hgtv these days is uninspired colorless drivel
And all of these people are more interested in seeing the mall succeed than getting rich quick so the atmosphere that permeates vintage mall media shines through.

Not sure if the Jesse Anderson murdering his wife was the final nail in the coffin. I remember there being doubts about his story with black men killing his wife from the get go. Also, Bayshore wasn't that great at that time either so I doubt many people went there instead.. The whole area had seriously gone down hill and the mall along with it. It is a great piece of video and history.

It is time to quit waiting on he Chinese owners of Northridge. They are NOT going to do anything with this empty shell. They have had years to do the things they talk about.
The fire chief is right. No more lives should be risked on this building. Knock it down. Now. Make the land useful for other purposes.
At this point, its just the owners lawyers benefiting from dragging out what needs to be done in a quick and safe manor.

Well ya know…when you’re walking into the mall and ya gotta bunch of kids threatening white people as they walk in doesn’t help! The neighborhood surrounding didn’t help! Wondering if you were going to get jacked as you’re walking to you’re car doesn’t help…plus all the rush in and grab as much of whatever you can ….doesn’t help! It’s no surprise it’s shut down and who really is responsible for that and a lot other things as well! Sad!!!
