Cyndy - I'm so happy you're back with your informative flying videos - diversion is a critical component in flying! I remember when I was learning it, the first set of questions from the CFI's mouth were what direction are you going to fly? What is your distance to the airport?, how much fuel you need to get there? What is your fuel burn? What direction is the wind blowing? What is your wind correction angle .. I was scrambling -trying to fly the airplane, figure out where is the diverted airport is on the sectional chart, fumbling with the plotter and E6B and in the mean time my airplane is WAY OFF COURSE! Big Fan of yours - Wish I can go flying with you someday!

I was taught to use a vor compass rose to determine heading and distance can be measured by knowing that each minute of latitude equals a nautical mile. Fast forward 30 years say hello to Foreflight 😉.

If you are on FF and need to switch over to FSS, you need to TELL ATC THAT YOU WILL BE SWITCHING! 'LAX approach bugsmasher 69z would like to contact FSS for weather'. They will respond 'freq change approved'. Talk to FSS, then go back to ATC's freq and say 'LAX approach bugsmasher 69z back on freq'. Or you can (but really shouldn't) cancel FF.
