Many many thanks for uploading this wonderful gem from TV's "Golden Age". I've read the excellent novel & seen the lush 20th Century Fox feature film version from 1961 (which starred Jennifer Jones & Jason Robards Jr). Producer & director Fletcher Markel was married to leading lady Mercedes McCambridge at the time.

Live broadcast of electronic pictures from coast to coast were a big deal back in those days .

FYI: Producer/Director/Host Fletcher Markle was married to Mercedes McCambridge when this segment was produced in September 1955, which may explain why she was cast in the lead role.

I love seeing this different "edition" of Fitzgerald's classic. Less emphasis on his drinking than the later movie, till the last act; more on Nicole and Tommy's backstory. Rosemary is always a selfish bitch till the last scene invented for this version. Co-dependency is explored and clearly stated. No emphasis however on Baby Warren's owning of Dick Diver and her cold ability to throw him away, when she is finished with him.

James Daly was great here. Mercedes McCambridge was completely miscast. She wasn't suited to the fragile, delicate roles, and her voice seemed to be phony and put on for the role.

McCambridge is always an interesting actress...but as Nicole Diver? No..

I find I must agree. She was a truly gifted actress. And very effective in the right role. But totally miscast as Nicole Diver. Jennifer Jones did a much better job in the role in the 1961 feature film version.

The show was good, but the acting of Mercedes McCambridge always had a hard edge that only worked for her in hard boiled roles. It doesn't work when she is playing a role of a softer feminine range. He voice was too harsh.

She was the voice of the demon in the Exorcist

Are you kidding.Mercedes in that role???? her "tough broad ", disturbing image is so much in conflict with the character. watching her, I just can't help anticipating that she will just burst out in her customary aggressive, offensive, heated math with her costars.

The 1950s was an extremely feminine era for women, lovely dresses, make-up, heels jewelry, and more.
But no matter how feminine they tried to make Mercedes Mcambridge, she still looked like a man!
