Important note: this will only be a positive force in the world if you ACT with compassion to others, like the people who gave those presents did. There are lots and lots of people who instead say “therefore poor people in my own country should not demand better living conditions”, and that makes the world a worse place because it blocks efforts to relieve people’s hardship. So pick a way you can help others, and do it.

I understand everyone's experience is different, as I've gotten my fair share of rude people here, but as someone from an Asian country known for hospitality who went through bullying, seeing people even give the slightest apology kind of made me tear up. If your team still is in contact with her please let her know how much love has come in from this video, from her wholesomeness, and for helping put into perspective how something as "simple" as a snack to us in the USA can be so dramatically changing for some. When she spoke of only taking small bites to ensure her family had some, for discussing her appreciation at the gesture but the moment she said she has NEVER had a gift even on her birthday got me choked up. And her comment that resonated a lot was how her perspective on when you have NO CHOICE in food (aka very little, bland, not good) and her finally learning options of food when escaping to SK was also powerful. What a strong person, anyone who survives and escapes NK must be but wow. Thank you for this.

Some people fill up on them instead of nutritious foods. So if you were to ONLY eat this stuff, or eat too much you would become malnourished and vitamin/mineral deficient. We Americans know very little about the people of North Korea...only it’s leader. To see the honesty, thanks, and humility on your face, and hear it in your voice was very moving for me. It made me think of my own daughter and what she perhaps would have had to endure if she had grown up in North Korea. The gifts you received are pretty much taken for granted by we Americans. I hope that yourself and your family will enjoy them. The people (men and women) of your country deserve better out of their leadership. I made a "generalized" statement that was intended as nothing but a compliment to one that has lived under, and escaped tyranny. How the hell you could take that as an insult, or ignorant, is utterly ridiculous. I'd challenge you to walk down the street and find one person out of ten that can even name the tyrant that's in control of North Korea, or knows what Communism is and what it represents. And, who would also know a damn thing about the Korean "Police Action." Why, and when it happened, the participants, the results, and if they have any clue what the 38th Parallel or DMZ is. The mere fact that you are unable to understand my comment or it's intent, took it as a personal insult, and gave you reason to personally attack me and my words, is a better representation of "ignorance" than any twisted misunderstanding of a comment left by me. It doesn’t matter who the leader of the army is. In the end everyone in that army is still just people who feel and still deserve empathy. Glad you are out and safe.

Someone should send a non food item for her birthday... I wonder if she has a favorite animal?

@@LordRuric Thank you very much. I wonder what non-food items are. I don't have any favorite animal. I was shocked to see pet culture in South Korea because North Korea has no concept of animal protection. I understand a lot now, but...

@@tv-iv5ic Your reply has made my night a lot better.
I was wondering about animals because a good non food gift would be something like a stuffed toy of your favorite animal.
I just enjoy seeing you smile after opening a present, because your joy brings joy to so many other people.
Someday I would like to be as strong as you..

I am a former US Marine ,I live in Japan. I've been in and out of Korea. I can say that any Marine I know would be honoured and more than happy to sit down with you and talk. Congratulations on your new life for you and your family, I can't imagine how much strength it took to do what you did. Just because we don't like the government there doesn't mean we do not like it's people. What yours have endured has been horrific. All the best!
