I love that Queen Margrethe is able to see her son Frederik as King and his wife, Mary as Queen. There may be a tinge of sadness but none of the grief usually surrounding the new occupants of the throne. It is what she, as the future queen, and subsequently as mother, has worked for her entire life. As the Danish people will tell you, she has done an outstanding job. More than 80% of the people believe that the new King and Queen will be successful. That’s as much as anyone can hope for. God bless the Danish Royal Family!

Queen Margrethe II used to be very strict on traditions. She was crowned the very same day her father King Frederik IX passed away. Queen Margrethe II was over the years pretty firm on her belief that she would rule until her death. What has made Queen Margrethe II so popular over the years is her ability to adapt to the times in which we live. While she did in fact use her recent back operation as a reason to abdicate, some people believe she may have glanced to the British monarchy and decided that it would be better for the Danish monarchy to get a new monarch while her son was still at an age where he would be able to rule for hopefully many years. Given the fact that now Queen Mary is actually even more popular among Danes than her husband, Queen Margrethe II must have been very aware that her decision to hand over the throne, while sad for many, would be very popular in general. The new King and Queen have some very big shoes to fill now since they are basically taking over from probably the most popular Danish monarch in Danish history.

You are right. No one does pomp and circumstance as the British. Our celebration was not in any way a cheap copy of the British event. However, we have our own traditions which in some cases go back centuries. And they were the ones followed plus some new ones as this is the first time since King Erik Lam in 1146 AD abdicated the throne that a reigning monarch voluntarily steps down. The tradition of the prime minister thrice proclaiming the change of monarch goes back to 1848 when Denmark got its first constitution and anointing and crowing kings ceased. This is entirely a Danish tradition and has nothing to do with the British.
Glad this royal family are not as wasteful and irresponsible as the UK Royal family. Glad they are not into wasting tax payers money ,this is true service. And am sure they do not occupy numerous homes in the face of homelessness of subjects like the UK RF
