I love going down hills backwards. It’s a great skill to develop on a hill and I teach it in my running hills classes. Lots of people don’t have the sense of safety and balance to do that from the start. You can go down a hill forward without hurting your knees. This is in centering the hips and keeping the weight in the buttock and pelvic floor area. I have a video for that as well. Many people in more agrarian and ethnic parts of the world do it beautifully. I am glad you brought up the backwards concept and how you use it. I would be happy to see people using that concept instead of just mindlessly going down the hill. Thanks for sharing!

After a long descent down from a mountain in spring last year when I was again much too fast and hurried like an idiot without any caution I got problems in my left knee. It got swollen and produced crackling sounds when being moved ...my local doctor (expert mountaineer) told me that many of his older mountaineer colleagues have knee problems and that is why he started to be VERY careful and moves only slowly during a descent. Since then I lost weight, made a diet change (in order to avoid inflammations) and always use hiking poles when hiking down...this helps too. Thank you for your convincing and helpful suggestions!

Thank you for sharing! What I love is you focused on lifestyle changes so you could continue to enjoy hiking. To me being curious about what you could do to make things work for you verses giving up and feeling defeated. Bravo!

That type of stepping is taught in one of the Chinese martial arts, BaQua.

Did you go over the side of the trail, like cutting a switchback for your video?

I don't remember because it was a few years ago. Possibly!

... you doing it the 'Hard way'...
... And you are ruining your knees - in the process of going down hill - facing forward....
...as a former Goat Hurd mgr.
... chasing after run away goats up and down mountains all day long....
... whenever i am going down steep hillsides
...i Walk Backwards facing the hillside - Large steps - fast paced..
... it's actually better for your muscles and your knees...
...i can actually get down faster - safer than anyone -
    - without tearing up my knees..
    ...and if it's really steep...
    then
...i get down even faster because i am sliding down
    - facing against the mountain side - of course using heavy gloves and good boots help in the process for better control 💥👍🤸
