Dan's mother had a bad mental illness and it was later revealed that she was an unreliable narrator when telling Dan about how awful his father was. To be fair, Ed DID go on trips a lot, but it's not like he abandoned her. He did what he could to help her out whenever she'd have her psychotic meltdowns. And this was before Dan was even born. I'd say Ed is pretty noble for taking all the heat from Dan for years, just so he could hide Audrey's (Dan's mother) illness from his son. He's a good guy, just not a good family man. As for Crystal, she's a sweetheart imo But she was lonely and desperate for a partner, and Ed took advantage of this. They weren't meant to be together at all.
Always wondered if they created Crystal as a reference to Krystle of the worldwide known 1980s show Dynasty . When Roseanne started, Dynasty was in its last year and already a caricature of itself.
