Seriously, he’s an amazing actor. And I’m glad he’s lost so much weight. Much better for his health. He’s an example of acting truly being an ‘art form’.
This scene was so gut wrenching. Had to be a gut punch for Dan to learn more about his Mother and the past. And when Dan starts sobbing and tells Roseanne he can't take this, she puts her arms around him and tells him that's okay, she'll take it with him. A great performance by both Roaseanne and John Goodman in this episode.
I remember watching this when I was 10 when it aired. It really tripped me out as a kid seeing a big, strong guy like Dan break down and cry. It was like seeing my own dad cry, which later that year I did see when my parents got divorced.
I've only seen my Dad cry twice, 2010 when we had the family dog Oliver put down who was the best dog we ever had, 6 years later when his brother my Uncle passed. This last summer Oliver's successor Dugan, who we got 6 months after Oliver's passing, himself passed away and he too was considered the best dog we ever had, I wasn't present but I know my Dad cried for him too. It's very hard to watch because it happens so rarely.
How Goodman didn't get an Emmy for this episode is beyond me. Maybe one of the most moving moments in a sitcom ever right up there with some of All in the Family and Family Ties.
He channeled a pain that only comes from many different hurts hitting you all at once. Shock, from learning the truth. Anger, from having not known it and how it affected his attitude and approach to the situation. Regret, from having come to hate someone who was really trying to have his back and protect him. Confusion, from not understanding why it had to be that way.
This was a sad and powerful scene. Heartbreaking seeing him break down and cry at 3:17 I felt like that when my grandmother died earlier this year. John Goodman gave a Emmy worthy performance.
John Goodman was so damn good as Dan. While he always seemed like a goofy loving dad, his best performances were definitely when Dan was upset. His anger and emotions just seemed so genuine, how a real person might act.
It's kinda interesting. I was watching a rerun of "Seinfeld" and they kept saying they didn't want to be around a character because he's crazy and takes medication, but it was basically treating it as a joke. "Roseanne", on the other hand, took this stuff dead serious, even if it was a sitcom. This show was so willing to go to places other shows wouldn't dare or brush off as a joke.
I think the difference is that the Seinfeld characters were not written to be relatable. They were written to be egocentric narcissists that never show any sort of growth or character development. It's part of the joke.
The thing about Seinfeld though is that it was never intended to be anything but satirical. There's never been a dramatic episode of Seinfeld nor do they care if either the characters or the viewers learn anything from it.
Lloyd Braun 😂😂😂 The Chinese gum, Jerry’s glasses and the movie theater hot dog 😂😂😂😂Creators of Seinfeld said “no hugs, no lessons learned” … different production styles
Thank for posting this. This scene always touches my heart and I always shed a few tears. So powerful you can feel Dans pain and Roseanne’s heartfelt moment comforting Dan her husband who’s she’s use to always being a rock for the family. I love this show Roseanne and John Goodman are such great actors but John should have won an award for this scene.
My grandmother has Alzheimer's and I am one of her caregivers. Everybody has a breaking point where it just gets too much and either you get angry or you cry because the reality is so heavy that you can't bear the weight on your feet so you fall to your knees. My situation may be different from Dan's, but I also know what it's like to live with mental illness. I have an anxiety disorder and because Alzheimer's also comes with anxiety attacks, and for the entire ride I've had to go through a lot of triggers to help her. Everybody needs to let it all out and in a way that is not destructive. Coming to terms with a grim reality is hard for everyone and John Goodman did a fantastic job conveying that range of emotions in this scene.
I watch this show as a child, Buttrey watching it as a man I have a greater appreciation John Goodman's portrayal of Dan Conner. He truly personifies the American Working Class Hero, faults and all. Without John Goodman no, I do not think that show wood have been a success
The truest version of real life that was in TV. The realness of what they dealt with in the show. Every family could relate to the Connors in some way shape or form.
I really relate to Dan on this. My sister and I buried our parents and our one brother, and she’s in very poor health. I don’t know how she’ll be in a few years. Thank the good Lord I have my wife and friends to see me through it all.

I remember watching this episode live as it aired. I was a young teen then. We watched every week. I remember seeing my mom gasp and put her hand over her mouth when she saw Dan cry.
and these days, people would make fun of Dan and call him all kinds of dumb names and claim that Roseanne's reaction was unrealistic and make all these claims about what "really" happens when a guy shows emotion around his spouse. If only.
Marriage isn’t about the fancy ring, the wedding dress, and the cake, that’s not what marriage is about, marriage is about sticking it out when it gets extremely hard, it’s about sticking to each other, taking each others pain away, and talking about the things that are extremely hard to talk about, like this for example, and standing by each other when things get tough, yes Dan and rose fight a lot, and have disagreements, but they love each other and they stick it out, and rose is playing as an extreme great wife to Dan, she is his not only his wife, but his best friend, his counselor, when he needs her, to be and Dan is the same, this is an example of a good marriage, marriage is a team, and a partnership.

This whole episode was amazing and is my favorite, it is a shame the the second season of the semi spin off undid this episode and ruined Big Ed's character.
I cannot get behind The Conners because, for me, that was too big of a cast change. After it was revealed that Roseanne Conner was a casualty of the opioid epidemic, I thought, how can the writers bring the comedy back after Roseanne died in the most depressing way possible. Mark did not die as a result of an overdose as his actor Glen Quinn did. Mark died from a motorcycle accident from hitting a deer. Somebody there had to be upset with Barr to make her character die in such a sad way. They could have at least could have had Roseanne die in the funniest way as a way possible. It's a comedy after all!
@@Beefer-e4j That's debatable. Actually, Barr got the last laugh. The original show is still everywhere. Also, she still does stand up to sold out crowds. Dispite the comment from five years ago.
In the season 2 Thanksgiving episode, Dan's mom was played by Anne Wedgeworth (Lana from Three's Company). She was normal then. She ran her own travel agency even.
