How to Straighten a Misaligned Steering Wheel

  • I show how to adjust the tie rods on a Honda Civic to straighten the steering wheel so the car moves in a straight line when the steering wheel is straight. This process applies to any make or model of a car that uses tie rods, however depending on how the tie rod connects to the axel and in which direction the car moves when the steering wheel is straight, the process will differ accordingly.

    Whenever I did wheel alignment in tire shop, I always adjusted tie rod by myself. because steering wheel slightly not aligned. the shop should be shame themselves! this is the best video I've ever seen in youtube. no stupid music, very straight forward explanation.

    I strongly suggest marking default position with a sharpie or something before starting to adjust, that way if you mess up somehow you can always go back to position where you started.

    One of the best videos that dealt with the mist important aspects of this task: orientations of the tires with crooked and centered steering wheel, and the effects of shortening or lengthening the tire rod on the toe.
    Because the outer rod is connected to the spindle behind the shaft, shortening the driver side rod, for example, creates a resultant force the pulls the rear aspect of that wheel inwards and the front aspect of same wheel outwards (toe in).
    Lengthening produces opposite effects.
    So which wheel to toe in or out is determined by taking the baseline of the imagined position of the tires after manually centering the steering wheel.
    This is the way I understand it.

    Good helpful video clearly explained. i think if you have the steering wheel severely off centre it may need to be removed and aligned again but for slightly off centre this would be fine. be sure to have the wheels aligned first before adjusting track rods 😊

      shorten the passenger side (screw in) and extend the driver sider (screw out). do 1/4 of turn on each side and test drive.

    I think this would work if it is slightly misaligned and you need to do slight adjustments here or there to get it back to normal. I remember my old civic I really messed up my right front wheel once. Then, I took it in the shop for something and they also did an alignment for me, they said, they did the best they could. But it really F'up! So, my wheel steering would always look like it more to the left then straight to drive straight? I guessing that's what they are calling "Bent"?

    I have the same problem after my alignment. So the driver side you turn the tie rod counter clockwise to shorten? and the passenger side clockwise to make it larger? Same amount of turns apply to both sides correct?

    • @TheBrianCloud
      @TheBrianCloud Před 7 měsíci

      Both wheels could have a different number of turns. Your situation may be completely different from the video as far as which tie rod goes which direction. If an alignment shop did your alignment and it is still not correct, have them fix it!

    ive paid two places to align the steering wheel and both places failed. I am now going to go back to the second place to make them align it properly
    Edit: if I place the steering wheel straight it drifts off to the right. only takes a few meters to end up in a different lane if I do so
