    Biggest thing that I have learned is when you buy a acro’s and you put in your tank don’t expect it to do anything for upwards of six months. And don’t freak out during that time changing a bunch of things to get it to start growing. Acros are a little pain in the ass divas they will grow when they want to grow and once they start growing after sitting dormant they will explode and you will have to trim it monthly to keep it from getting too big. That has been my experience anyway.

    You hit some key points my friend. Setting your lights & dialing them into where you want them as well as having stability are probably two of the most important aspects. Your tank is looking very nice and your SPS are thriving really well.

    I think a lot of us can agree that Acropora should be in its own care level. Cause stylophora, pocilopora, or monti pora grow like weeds then you add acropora and it’s in a whole different difficulty

    I took a 2x4 and cut it a little short of the width of one of the windows in my office/mancave. I drilled a hole matching the same size of hose I connected to my skimmer. I also wrapped the 2x4 in insulation foam. The foam seals the 2x4 where it makes contact with the window and window frame. So the 2x4 is sealed against the weather and I am able to draw fresh air from outside the house to my skimmer. Now I cannot lock my window, but my security system of 2 german shepherds, a weimaraner and coon hound mix, and living out in the sticks of Texas greatly reduce the risk of break-ins.

    A little late to the party here haha. However, I would like to emphasize on trace elements. Went through a few interesting battles where I saw browning on montis and sps frags. To compensate for lack of water changes I tried a few different trace elements by red sea and saw some tremendous results. My issue was testing each extra element on its own. For example, potassium which I'm under the impression was my leading variable. Helped bring color back in purple and green pigmentation specifically but can also cause browning if over used. There's has to be a sweet spot some where lol

    Very interested in your CO2 scrubber setup. I noticed that when I activated the recirculating scrubber on the skimmer, the Alk spikes immediately. Makes sense when the pH increases suddenly. How to deal with this alk increase? Use a valve and Tsplitter on the air intake and gradually increase recirculation?

    • @InappropriateReefer
      @InappropriateReefer  Pƙed 2 lety +1

      I actually haven't run into this Alk increase, Alk consumption slowly ramps up for me over a few days, but I have not noticed a spike in Alk from the recirculating scrubber.. đŸ€” If I were to encounter this and want to only scrub part of the day, I would use my controller to run solenoid to control whether the skimmer pulls in the recirculating air, or fresh air. Alternatively I may put a T with an air pump pushing fresh air into the line, and use a timer to control when the air pump turns on. These are just ideas though that I have seen/heard people do, I have not actually tried these yet.

  • @garysurquin6944

    I’m also not a fan of recirculating. For my logic, there is no way you can keep O2 levels high if recirculating, as O2 will be taken up into the water column, and no replenished. I get easy and stable 8.4-8.5 pH drawing external air through a CO2 scrubber. Cheap, manageable, and extremely effective. You do need a high air volume skimmer though.
