- Your neighborhood reefer is joining a SPS grow out competition - TSA’s Coral Smackdown Grow Out Competition! By participating, I have already won one of the high-end SPS of my dream, the Fruity Splice. I have been interested in grafted corals ever since my early visit to TSA a few years ago when they showed me their Fruity Splice colony. Since then, that coral has always held a mythical position in my heart but the price tag is a splash of reality, lol.
@ReefBum did a podcast with Kevin from @TopShelfAquatics recently with a special focus on coral grafting, it is very interesting what's involved and a great listen.

$1200 for a frag is ridiculous. TSA is one of the companies that has ruined the reef hobby by focusing on making as much profit from hobbyists rather than the hobby.
They’re just taking advantage of peoples stupidity. Can’t blame them for that.
@@Dheerajprao actually you can that’s literally what I just did. They’re the reason why torches are so expensive. Exporters caught on that they were selling different color variations for more and demanded more money.
I 10000000000% agreee. That fruity splice is no where near worth 1200$. What TSA is doing is absolutely disgusting I don’t support or buy anything from them anymore.
@@Botzz28 yup I wish big CZcamsrs with platforms would speak out against them but I guess they wouldn’t get free shit.
@@watrpologuy4549 I know. TSA set the bar for the rest of vendors across the hobby. They don’t realize how much influence they have on the hobby. Now everything is 1000$ for a one inch drag. It’s horrible. It’s all about the money not about the beauty of the hobby and animals anymore. I went to Reefapalooza NY this year and literally left within 30 minutes that’s how bad the prices were. It was a joke.
Topshelfaquatics sending free coral to him when he can obviously afford it and passes the cost of to us the regular customer. Good job Topshelfaquatics 👏
Goodluck on the competition it’ll be cool to see where everyone is at!
When do you Americans finally adopt the metric system, the centimer/millimeter part on the ruler is much more precise! 😄 There is a reason the whole world uses metric except for you guys. 😉
I 100% agree with you. I had to ask if we'd be using cm or inches. Also prefer metric.
I wished!!! It would be awesome
There’s no way the fruity splice is worth 1200$. What a rip off. These companies are out of their mind.
These big companies have absolutely destroyed this hobby with their ridiculous prices in my opinion
I would never spend that kind of money for a frag ,that’s what’s wrong with the coral industry,I won’t pay more than $100 and that’s painful!!!!!!
i'm sorry but I can never support a business with a ridiculous price like that. It's just ridiculous.
$1200 for a coral that has the two of the most common colors in the hobby combined 😅
I'm excited for your participation in this contest. You are a natural teacher and I've been following your vids for years. I'm in your corner, cheering you on. Looking forward to all your updates.
I agree with you about the "year mark" (for coral growth). But let's see what happens in six, i know some reefers can do magic in three months (or so they say).
I have been thinking of getting a pico tank as my first saltwater and even though finances are a high obstacle, this competition might just push me to piecing something together. Time will tell.
Good luck! (Insert pic of your pom pom crab here) 😊
Thanks buddy! Pico tank may require a very disciplined water change schedule and keen observation due to the low tolerance for error (super small water volume); you could probably put together a very respectable 15g or a cube tank, or any tank’s footprint that only requires one light on a budget. One tank, one light, one wavemaker, one heater and you can find success as long as you give things time. Good luck!
Good luck !
You're my favorite to win Moki. I have faith in you!
Thanks for having more faith in me than myself, Burt! 😆
Hi again❤️. Can’t wait to see these frags grow out.❤
I watched a lot of your old videos the last days and seeing the 135 in the current state blew my mind. Really nicely grown.
Thank you! There are some set backs but for the most part the tank is rolling along 😊 All credits to the corals resilience
Excited for this grow out battle! May the odds be in your favor
Good luck with the grow out!
Good luck , looking good so far , tough competition for sure 🎉
Awesome video
I’m getting back into the hobby after a year out and TSA prices are so much higher than they used to be. I used to be able to get 5 corals for $100 after shipping.
FJB
1200 for that its not even that nice lol
Wouldn't even pay 12 dollars for that
Goodluck!
Awww baby girl is adorable and love the pup 🐶 so cute. Awesome video I know Tusi is a king of sps love his tank. You got this beautiful tank 🪸🪸🪸
how nice I was wondering how those splices looked on someone else's photography , looking forward to updates
When did you get the King and Price of Darkness Hammer? I remember when you put a video out when first getting it. But through video, I don't know how long that ago that was truly. Just trying to do a size comparison as yours looks to have already split and looks bigger. Mine have grown but not even close. Thanks!
any chance you ever do another frogfish tank? i really enjoyed that series
Nice size frags. In australia people are selling across by the polyp.
Based on my experiences, large volume tanks grows corals quicker… but good luck with your grow out battle. 💪
Can't wait to see how this goes, where did you get the blue light torch from??
Coral = Names x Names =€$¥$$$ !!!🤦🏽♂️. Thank you America
12:29 it looks like the green in the Fruit Splice is getting over taken by the pink/purple part.
How did it actually turn out?
Can I get some cuts of those frags :) when you win
I just order the same thing you got. We will see how I do, if we both loose I invite you and your family over to Ma we can cry over it and then your kids can have fun with the fish pond and the peacocks outside.
It is what it is. Im wondering if space in the sump, would be good or bad,, for frags.
The tank loooks good with what ever you put into it.
Should build pond ,10x 20 using 4x4 and 2x4 homemade/plywood, with a strong window frame. It depends where foundation slab is.
interesting to learn , but i cant afford this hobby. Good luck on raising everything.
Top shelf would be great if they didn’t rip off the entire hobby.
Pretty stiff competition. Can’t wait to see how the different reefing techniques pan out. Good luck!
Do you dose two part or Kalk? Do you have it on dosers?
I’m doing all Kalk when light is off; if the Kalk dosing is more than my evaporation rage (meaning water in my sump keeps going up, instead of the ATO kicks on), I dial back the Kalk and start using 2-parts.
You ever wanna get rid of some soft corals frags I will gladly but some.
literally just saw this on r2r
Im not a stupid reefer Ty 😂😂😂
what's the difference between 'splice' vs 'frag'
Can you share your spectrum?
Anyone with MH will grow Acros faster.
Love seeing these pieces in your care! Can’t wait to see what you can do in the competition!

Good luck in the contest. But that's not how you read a ruler my friend.... each notch is a 1/16th of an inch. So 1 notch above 1" is 1 1/16", not 1.1 inch.
BTW, any update on your asterina starfish battle with the harlequin in your sump?
dammit you are absolutely right, I need to brush up on my basic measuring skills, thanks for the heads-up. 😬 The Harlequin-in-sump experiment did not end well, I did not see the shrimp after 1.5 week and the asterina starfish stopped running up the glass after that (before the disappearance, the starfishs consistently run up the glass),. There are two pretty large chocolate starfish in the sump with the shrimp, but my guess is that a single shrimp was not strong enough to flip the chocolate starfish as they are both pretty good size and lived in the system for almost a year at this point so pretty well acclimated. If I ever try it again (not too likely), I may have to just clip a CC starfish leg at a time (not preferreded), or keep a pair of the shrimps so they can take down the entire CC starfish..
Coming back into the hobby 15 years later and it's shocking how money orientated it has become. God forbid we lose all our coral reefs, we will look back on 1200 dollar frags and only then will we realise that this hobby should have been for ensuring the survival of corals. Fuck all these companies selling corals and fish for these prices. Keep your splices.
Yeah your tank is a mess. Those sticks don't look very happy at all.
C be good
totally not worth that much.
Those frags DO NOT reflect the price. TSA is out of their minds
Way overpriced corals there
Maybe you should have a giveaway instead of keeping the free coral for yourself. Seems kinda of messed up that the cost of your free coral gets passed of to us.
He aint giving away squat, he is literally telling viewers his $50 frags are $1200.. 😂 he is being paid to promote a scam, and scammers only take they dont give..
@@4kays160 i agree I can't stand Mokieeewwaay or whatever his name is
Wow them some ugly frags 😂😂, but seriously ugly 😂
Good luck !! @subiereef
Good luck!
