  • At first glance of the beautiful city of Tirana, Albania one would never know the tragedies unleashed on the people of Albania for decades. The country was locked down and closed to the outside world for so long some wondered if the country even existed. Our visit to the capitol city was both shocking and eye opening on so many levels. Join us for a tour of this modern city and a journey through the distant and recent history of this mysterious place. Never before have we felt so strongly that it is so important to understand our history, so that maybe we don't repeat the tragedies of our past.

Thanks guys for showing the horrific experience that Albanians endured not that long ago(historically speaking). So few people realize how a government can become evil and oppressive in a stealthy way. When they realize what's happened it is too late to change it. Snow, you are so right about by not studying history we will tend to repeat it. Unfortunately, this lack of interest in history or the current trend to revise history is a great danger that we face in our modern world. Younger generations who seem to look at Communism as a positive form of government are blissfully unaware of the darker side of it. P.S. Have a great time visiting your Dad and family. 🫂❤️

What a beautiful church. Absolutely gorgeous.Such history there and if it’s not studied there is always a chance it will merge its head again. I dread to think what will become of the world in years to come. Too much greed and who wants popularity. Wars never solved anything. Just grief and debt.Have a lovely day both and will see you on the next one

Despite knowing its more recent history, I was as dumbfounded when you two drove your van into Albania as if you had driven it onto the far side of the moon. When I was growing up in the US in the 1960's & '70s, Albania was so obscure it was almost never mentioned except as a metaphor for the inaccessible & obscure (e.g., "I don't know where the heck he went - Shangri La, Timbuktu, Albania?"). It barely even showed on a lot of maps, & I can't remember ever hearing it mentioned in a history class.
Thank you for taking us through the Bunkerart(sp?) museum, sad and disturbing though it was. These things happened, they are real; and to dent or ignore them would be a distortion. And also thank you for showing us the beautiful and vibrant Albania of today: what a recovery the people & their country have made.
There's a Cold War-era rumor that I wonder if you've seen any evidence of. The story goes that there was a big currency shortage in totalitarian Albania; and an alternate underground currency developed in the form of unopened packs of Lucky Strike cigarettes. Lucky Strike was a popular brand during WWII, but few had entered the country since. The packs were thus present but limited in number; znd were reasonably portable, & durable. They also had the advantage of being seemingly innocent if the police found them on you. The cigarette packs were seldom if ever opened & smoked (they would have been terribly stale by the 1980's , which was when i heard this); & had a buying power in Albania roughly equivalent to $20 in the US.I would love to know if you've run across anything like this.
Best of luck & bon voyage to Snow up in the skies; & to Curt & the kitties below.

    • @Zenigata-san
      @Zenigata-san Před 2 měsíci

I'm a bit younger but men 10-15 years older than me (in their late 40s, early 50s nowadays) have once or twice mentioned to me how they, as kids, would try to sell Lucky Strike cigarette packs on street corners, while trying to avoid being caught by the local police. Their stories would often involve them running away in fear, hiding somewhere for long periods of time or trying to hide "the product" somewhere safe in order to retrieve it after a few days had passed and things had quieted down.
I had completely forgotten about those stories until now but can confirm they are real. Most likely, the police being more forgiving if they found the cigarettes on them was probably because they were kids and the officers would pretend not to notice in order to avoid ruining their young lives. The "distributors" would obviously get a different treatment if they were older or if God forbid, the officer knew you and didn't like you.
I wonder how you came about this bit of very specific information in the US. Really fascinating.
P.S. The museum visited here is called BunkArt 2. There is an even bigger one (BunkArt 1) in the outskirts of the city that was supposed to serve as refuge to the elite and their families in case of a foreign attack. Massive place with even more detailed information on the regime for anyone who's interested.

You must know history if you want to keep the horrors and mistakes of the past from happening again. Too many believe that the tyrannical nature of previous governments can be avoided “this time” as they envision their unrealistic utopia. Suffering is always inevitable because of man’s desire for power and greed. History serves as a reminder of this.

So very glad you found a way home. I heard sadness in Curt’s voice as he said goodbye for a few days.❤️❤️. Safe travels and lovely visit in the States, Snow.
The museums were so laden with depression. Makes me appreciate the peace we have been hanging onto for years.
Thank you for always giving us such a beautiful experience as you travel so many places I know I’ll never see in person. You make me feel like I’m there with you. Thank you so much!

Its an amazing view of Albania. Here in the UK in the past year we have had a problem of illegal migrants from Albania seeking refuge and safety. Also claiming there is such poverty that they have no jobs or money or food!! Your view backs up their president or prime minsters story of how well Albania is doing.

There have to be lots of people that enjoyed being oppressors in the police state - pining for the bad old days. I would imagine many people suffering PTSD.

The bad old days are still very much alive in the USA.

No hippies? I guess I couldn’t have visited. I wonder if the day will ever come where we can all live in peace and instead of fighting, people come together to lift each other up.
I hope you had good flights with low stress. Sending good thoughts to your father.

Repeating itself, well it already is, or has it really ever stopped even briefly? The trouble is the ones that need to see and learn from this never will!

Wow! That was an intense history of Albania. I felt so heavy and tearful after your tour of the communist museum.😢 Thank you for sharing that and it's absolutely true that if we do not learn from history, we are destined to repeat it.
